AAA Hosting a Free Catalytic Converter Theft Prevention Program in Skokie
** Media is invited to attend**
With catalytic converter thefts on the rise in Illinois and across the country, AAA – The Auto Club Group is hosting a free event to help motorists prevent this ongoing issue.
The event will take place on Saturday, November 1, from 8:30 AM to 3:30 PM at AAA’s Car Care Plus, located at 9349 Skokie Blvd, Skokie, IL (847-423-3500). Appointments are still available for any motorists interested in having their catalytic converters etched for added security.
Thieves hope to make money by melting down the precious metals found in the anti-pollution devices – namely, platinum, palladium, and rhodium. These metals are expensive because there is a high demand and a limited supply globally. Getting a replacement catalytic converter can be costly, running from $2,000 to $3,000.
“One big issue for police is that catalytic converter thefts are hard to track,” said Molly Hart, spokeswoman for AAA – The Auto Club Group. “Converters typically don’t have a VIN stamped on them, so this free catalytic converter etching event – where etching unique numbers on catalytic converters will help deter theft.”
If your catalytic converter has been stolen, you will know immediately – it will be loud. A catalytic converter is positioned between your car’s engine and muffler. If it is removed, your exhaust will no longer flow through your muffler, so there will be a lot of noise.
“The thefts are brazen and can occur in under 90 seconds and even take place in broad daylight,” added Hart.
Signs of a stolen catalytic converter:
- Loud noise
- Smellier or dark exhaustion
- Sluggish, sputtering acceleration
- Check Engine light will illuminate.
- Damage under your vehicle
What you should do if your catalytic converter is stolen:
- Contact the police. The sooner they know about the theft, the better the odds – albeit slim – that they can find the thieves.
- Check your insurance policy to see if the theft is covered. If your vehicle only carries liability insurance, it’s likely not a covered event.
- Get your catalytic converter replaced immediately. As you can see above, it’s unwise to drive your vehicle without one.
