AAA Hosts Free Catalytic Converter Theft Prevention Event
CHICAGO, Ill., (August 10, 2026) – AAA – The Auto Club Group is hosting a free catalytic converter theft prevention event on Saturday, August 15 at its Vernon Hills AAA Car Care Plus facility - 1680 N Milwaukee Avenue, Vernon Hills from 8:30am to 3:30pm.
“These registered labels help deter theft and make stolen parts easier to recover,” said Molly Hart, spokeswoman for AAA – The Auto Club Group. “That can save vehicle owners money, time and the hassle of replacing a stolen part.”
Catalytic converters, required in U.S. vehicles since 1975, reduce harmful exhaust emissions. Thieves target them for precious metals including platinum, palladium and rhodium. Replacing a stolen converter can cost $1,000 to $3,500.
Drivers usually know immediately if a catalytic converter is stolen because the vehicle may become much louder and produce darker, smellier exhaust.
Signs of a stolen catalytic converter:
Loud noise
Darker or smellier exhaust
Sluggish acceleration
Check Engine light
Visible damage under the vehicle
Tips for protecting yourself against catalytic converter theft:
Install an anti-theft shield, cage or steel cables.
Park in a garage or well-lit area where access under the vehicle is difficult.
Review your insurance policy to confirm comprehensive coverage.
