AAA Hosts Free Catalytic Converter Theft Prevention Event

Auto club partners with local law enforcement to help vehicle owners protect valuable parts

AAA – The Auto Club Group is partnering with the Lake County Sheriff’s Office and Vernon Hills Police Department to host a free catalytic converter theft prevention event at its Vernon Hills AAA Car Care Plus facility today, to help motorists avoid becoming a victim of this costly crime. Over 80 vehicle owners have signed up for appointments to receive this service.

According to a 2022 report from the National Insurance Crime Bureau (NICB), Illinois ranked number 4 in the nation for catalytic converter thefts. At the event, technicians will apply a non-removable, etched ID label to catalytic converters, which is then registered in a national theft prevention database.

“Since catalytic converters typically don’t have a VIN stamped on them, these registered labels will help deter theft and make the stolen parts easier to recover,” said Nick Jarmusz, director of public affairs for AAA – The Auto Club Group. “This can help reduce the cost – in both money and time – of needing to have a replacement procured and installed.”

Required in the U.S. since 1975, catalytic converters neutralize harmful gases in engine exhaust, reducing air pollution and smog. Thieves hope to make money by melting down the precious metals found in the anti-pollution devices – namely, platinum, palladium, and rhodium. These metals are expensive because there is high demand and limited supply globally. Getting a replacement catalytic converter can be costly, running from $1,000 to $3,500.

If your catalytic converter has been stolen, you will know immediately. A catalytic converter is positioned between your car’s engine and muffler. If it is removed, your exhaust will no longer be flowing through your muffler, resulting in more noise and more, darker exhaust.

Tips for protecting yourself against catalytic converter theft:

  • Consider installing an anti-theft device over your catalytic converter, like a shield, cage or steel cables.
  • Park in a garage or well-lit public area. Consider a spot that would make it difficult for thieves to get underneath your car.
  • Review your auto insurance policy. See if you have comprehensive coverage. This provides protection from damage caused by an incident other than a crash, including theft.

Response to this offering was overwhelming, with all 84 appointment slots filled over a week before the event. AAA plans to host another etching event in September at its Car Care Plus location in North Riverside.
