AAA Urges Caution and Safety Ahead of Chicago Marathon
Rising Traffic Volumes Pose Challenges for Drivers and Pedestrians Alike
With hundreds of participants and spectators expected to gather in Chicago for the marathon this weekend, AAA – The Auto Club Group is urging locals and visitors to plan ahead and prioritize safety. The influx of people can create challenging conditions for both drivers and pedestrians.
“Many visitors may not be familiar with the local roads, which can lead to unpredictable traffic patterns,” said Molly Hart, spokeswoman for AAA – The Auto Club Group. “We recommend those who are driving into the city for the marathon to arrive early, slow down, and be vigilant for pedestrians. Those on foot should remember to stick to sidewalks, use crosswalks, and refrain from using their cellphones to avoid wandering into danger.”
AAA advises drivers to use navigation apps for route planning before getting behind the wheel and to let a passenger assist if possible. Expect delays and allow extra time to reach your destination. Driving slowly is crucial, as large crowds can lead to unexpected pedestrian crossings. For parking, choose well-lit lots or garages, lock all doors, close windows, and remove any valuables from sight.
Pedestrians are reminded to use sidewalks and designated crosswalks. If no sidewalk is available, walk facing traffic on the left side. It's important to put away phones and other distractions to remain aware of moving vehicles. Making eye contact with drivers before crossing the street helps ensure you have been seen. Never assume a driver sees you; wait for cars to come to a complete stop before crossing.
“Safety at a large event like the Chicago Marathon is a shared responsibility,” added Hart. “By staying aware of our surroundings, respecting traffic rules, and looking out for one another, we can all contribute to a secure, fun, and enjoyable weekend.”
