Despite the Autumn Colors, Drivers Find More Green in Their Wallets

CHICAGO, Ill., (October 9, 2023) — Illinois gas prices continues to decline at the pump compared to a week ago. Illinois drivers are now paying an average price of $3.69 per gallon for regular unleaded gasoline.

Today's state average is 11 cents less than a week ago, 31 cents less than a month ago, and 72 cents less than this time last year.

"Several factors continue to impact lower gas prices, such as slack demand, cheaper oil prices," said Molly Hart, spokeswoman for AAA – The Auto Club Group. "However, that could change depending on how the market responds to rising geopolitical tensions following the surprise attack by Hamas on Israel."

While the Hamas attack on Israel reportedly did not directly impact global supplies, oil prices have risen over the weekend, due to the uncertainty of how things will unfold.

According to data from the Energy Information Administration (EIA), gas demand dropped significantly from 8.62 to 8.01 million barrels a day last week. On the other hand, total domestic gasoline stocks increased substantially by 6.5 million barrels to 227 million barrels. Growing supply, amid low demand, has pushed pump prices down. If oil prices continue to decline, drivers can expect further price drops at the pump in the weeks ahead.

Ways to Save on Gasoline

  • Combine errands to limit driving time.
  • Shop around for the best gas prices in your community.
  • Pay with cash. Some retailers charge extra per gallon for customers who pay with a credit card.
  • Remove excess weight in your vehicle. Every 100 pounds taken out of the vehicle improves fuel economy by 1-2 percent.
  • Drive conservatively. Aggressive acceleration and speeding reduces fuel economy.
