Gasoline Supplies in Good Shape as Dorian Approaches

The slow moving storm has given gas stations enough time to refuel after surging demand

State officials say most - if not all - Florida gas stations have gasoline again. Late last week, Floridians swarmed the pumps, topping off their tanks and filling gas cans in preparation for Hurricane Dorian. The surge in demand left many gas stations on empty, but it appears things have stabilized.

"Fortunately, Dorian has moved so slowly that it allowed plenty of time for Floridians to get gasoline, and gas stations to be resupplied," said Mark Jenkins, spokesman, AAA - The Auto Club Group. "Now comes more of the waiting game. Most of Florida's ports on the east coast are or will be closed soon, which means no gasoline coming in or out of those ports. In the meantime, gas stations will rely on tanker trucks to make gasoline deliveries from terminals like Orlando and Tampa, until the storm passes. Statewide, gasoline supplies are still good. Gasoline deliveries will continue to be made as along as conditions are safe. The governor has approved law enforcement escorts for tanker trucks when necessary."

Florida gas prices have held relatively steady since a state of emergency was declared on Thursday. Since that time, Florida gas prices have averaged $2.44 per gallon. However, drivers likely noticed a 7 cent bump earlier in the week - before the state of emergency - which was likely due to retailers' expectations of higher demand for the Labor Day holiday.

Labor Day gas prices did end up being the lowest for the holiday since 2016. Florida drivers are paying 36 cents per gallon less than last year's holiday, which amounts to a savings of nearly $5.50 for a full tank of gasoline.

Labor Day marks the unofficial end of the summer travel season. From Memorial Day to Labor Day, summertime gas prices in Florida averaged $2.54 per gallon - 23 cents per gallon less than last summer. The primary cause for lower prices at the pump this summer were lower crude oil prices, driven strong US production and concerns that global demand cannot keep pace.
