Illinois Gas Prices Hold Steady

CHICAGO, Ill., (July 24, 2023) — Illinois gas prices are holding steady from a week ago. Illinois drivers are paying an average price of $3.83 per gallon for regular unleaded gasoline.

Monday's state average is 1 cent less than a week ago, 17 cents less than a month ago, and $1.01 less than this time last year. It now costs an average of $57.45 to fill a 15-gallon tank of regular gasoline. Drivers are paying $15.50 less to fill up at the pump compared to a year ago.

"There has been a lackluster demand for gasoline," said Molly Hart, spokeswoman for AAA – The Auto Club Group. "Some industry experts speculate that scorching temps in the Gulf Coast, Texas, and New Mexico are keeping people off the road which may explain why gas demand barely budged from last week."

Increasing Cost of Crude Oil Pushes Gas Prices Higher

Since last Monday, the national average for a gallon of regular gasoline has increased by 3 cents to $3.59. According to data from the Energy Information Administration (EIA), gas demand increased slightly from 8.76 to 8.86 million barrels a day last week. Meanwhile, total domestic gasoline stocks fell from 219.5 to 218.4 million barrels. With supplies tight, if demand climbs, pump prices will follow suit.
