Cruising continues to appeal to travelers seeking shared experiences with family and friends, along with the ability to better anticipate many vacation costs before departure. More than 90% of U.S. cruise passengers rate their experience as good or very good, and 93% book another cruise.

Caribbean Remains the Top Cruise Destination

The Caribbean accounts for 71% of U.S. cruise passenger volume. Cruise lines continue investing in private island destinations and deploying mega-ships to the region, providing passengers with more activities, entertainment and dining options.

Its proximity to U.S. departure ports also makes the Caribbean convenient for American travelers. The three busiest cruise ports in the world are in Florida: Miami, Port Canaveral and Fort Lauderdale.

Florida gas prices jumped early last week, reaching $4.23 per gallon on Thursday before declining through the weekend. 

Sunday's state average of $4.11 per gallon is: 

• 2 cents more than a week ago
• 22 cents less than last month
• $1.19 more than a year ago

Drivers are paying $62 to fill an average-size 15-gallon gas tank. That's $18 more than what drivers paid a year ago. 

"Oil prices went back above $100 a barrel last week, which could trigger another round of rising prices at the pump this week," said Mark Jenkins, spokesman for AAA - The Auto Club Group. 

The U.S. price for crude rose 10% last week, climbing from $91.85/b the previous week to $101.41/b on Friday. A $10 increase in crude oil prices could translate to a 25-cent increase at the pump. 

Oil prices rose last week amid growing concerns about global supplies. Escalating tensions in the Middle East disrupted oil shipments through the Strait of Hormuz, while renewed attacks on Russian energy infrastructure threatened additional supplies. A sharp decline in U.S. crude inventories added further upward pressure on prices.

Ahead of National Slow Down, Move Over Day on October 17, a new survey from the AAA Foundation for Traffic Safety found that more than 90% of drivers reported slowing down or moving over the last time they passed a disabled vehicle, tow truck, or police vehicle on the shoulder. However, previous observational research found that only 64% of drivers actually changed lanes or reduced their speed when required. More than one-third (36%) did neither.

The consequences of failing to slow down or move over can be deadly.

More than 2,100 people were struck and killed while stranded or working at the roadside between 2019 and 2023. In 2025 alone, AAA responded to more than 30 million roadside events, and 15 roadside service providers lost their lives in Slow Down, Move Over-related incidents. Several of those crashes involved impaired or hit-and-run drivers.

"Drivers often think roadside danger only affects police officers, firefighters, and tow truck operators," said Mark Jenkins, spokesman for AAA – The Auto Club Group. "But anyone can become vulnerable at the roadside. A flat tire, dead battery, or mechanical problem can place drivers and passengers just feet from moving traffic. That's why slowing down and moving over is so important."

Drivers Want Protection When They're the Ones on the Roadside

A new AAA survey found that drivers understand the risks of being stranded at the roadside. More than half (56%) of Floridians said being struck by another vehicle would be their biggest concern if their vehicle became disabled.

"It's easy to think a roadside stop is someone else's problem," said Jenkins. "But every driver could end up in that situation. That's why slowing down and moving over is more than a legal requirement. It's a responsibility we share."

Recognizing the dangers faced by stranded motorists, many states have expanded their Slow Down, Move Over laws to include disabled vehicles and other roadside situations.

Know Your State's Move Over Law

All 50 states have Slow Down, Move Over laws requiring drivers to move over or reduce speed when approaching vehicles stopped on the roadside. However, the specific vehicles covered and speed requirements vary by state.

In Florida, drivers must move over for all stopped vehicles displaying flashing or hazard lights, including law enforcement, EMS, fire, construction, and people with disabled vehicles. If changing lanes is not possible, motorists must reduce speed and proceed with caution.

What Should Drivers Do When They See Flashing Lights?

When approaching flashing lights, hazard lights, or a vehicle stopped on the shoulder:

• Slow down as soon as you see the vehicle ahead
• Move over one lane when it is safe to do so
• If you cannot move over safely, reduce speed and proceed with caution
• Stay focused and avoid distractions
• Never drive impaired or drowsy
• Watch for people working or standing near the vehicle

Research from the AAA Foundation found that 63% of crashes involving roadside assistance providers who were struck and killed occurred after the striking vehicle had already left the roadway, highlighting the role distraction, impairment, and fatigue may play in these tragedies.

What Should You Do If Your Vehicle Breaks Down?

A roadside emergency can happen to anyone. AAA recommends:

• Move your vehicle as far away from traffic as possible

• Note your location before calling for assistance
• Raise the hood if conditions are safe

"Most drivers never expect to become the person stranded on the shoulder," Jenkins said. "But breakdowns happen every day. The safest thing you can do is create as much space as possible between yourself and moving traffic and call for help."

Florida drivers are finally seeing relief at the gas pump after a sharp run-up in prices last month. The state average has fallen 34 cents per gallon in the past nine days as oil prices retreated from recent highs. The decline is saving drivers roughly $5 to $7 per fill-up compared to prices seen just over a week ago.

As e-bikes and e-scooters become more common among children and teens, AAA is reminding families that helmets remain one of the most effective ways to reduce the risk of serious injury.

According to a recent AAA survey of Floridians:

• 66% of adults have seen children riding e-bikes or e-scooters without a helmet
• More than half (59%) believe not enough riders wear helmets
• 83% support helmet requirements for e-bike and e-scooter riders

These findings come as health care providers across the country report a sharp rise in injuries involving young e-bike and e-scooter riders.

Why Are Doctors Concerned About E-Bike Injuries?

According to a recent medical study, injuries involving e-bikes and e-scooters among children and adolescents increased 7.5-fold between 2023 and 2026. The analysis examined more than 12,000 pediatric emergency department visits and found that more than a third of injured patients suffered head or neck injuries, while nearly 7% sustained traumatic brain injuries.

"Many parents see e-bikes and e-scooters as just another version of a bicycle, but some of these devices can reach much higher speeds,” said Mark Jenkins, spokesman for AAA - The Auto Club Group. “With higher speeds come greater risks. That's why it's so important for riders to wear a helmet that fits properly and is designed for the type of device they're riding."

The American College of Surgeons reports that head injuries are the most common injuries associated with e-bike crashes and notes that only about one-third of injured riders are reported to be wearing helmets. The organization recommends universal helmet use and advises matching helmet protection to the speed of the device.

What Type of Helmet Should You Wear on an E-Bike or E-Scooter?

Not all helmets are designed for the same type of riding. As device speeds increase, so does the need for additional impact protection. AAA recommends choosing a helmet that is certified for the speed and capabilities of the device being ridden.

Common helmet standards include:

• CPSC-certified bicycle helmets for traditional bicycles and lower-speed devices, generally up to 20 mph
• NTA 8776 helmets, which were developed for higher-speed e-bikes and e-scooters, generally up to 28 mph
• DOT-certified motorcycle helmets, designed for devices capable of speeds beyond 28 mph and offering additional protection, often including facial coverage

"One of the biggest misconceptions is that any helmet provides the same level of protection," Jenkins said. "The faster the device, the more important it becomes to choose a helmet designed for those speeds."

Do You Need a Helmet to Ride an E-Bike or E-Scooter in Florida?

Helmet requirements for e-bike and e-scooter riders differ significantly across the country. Some states require helmets for younger riders, while others have requirements based on rider age, device classification, or local ordinances.

Florida E-Bike and E-Scooter Laws

• Riders and passengers under 16 must wear a bicycle helmet that meets national safety standards
• Florida does not set a statewide minimum age for riding an e-bike, although local governments may adopt additional restrictions

The AAA Consumer Pulse™ Survey was conducted online among 400 Florida residents from April 17 – 26, 2026. Survey results have a maximum margin of error of ± 4.9% points. Florida gas prices rose 18 cents last week, then declined 6 cents through the weekend. Friday's daily average of $4.42 per gallon was the highest since May. 

"Gasoline prices bounced higher last week, in response to oil price gains the week before," said Mark Jenkins, spokesman for AAA - The Auto Club Group. "Fortunately, oil prices moved lower last week. That could ease some of the upward pressure on prices at the pump."

The U.S. price for crude oil settled at $92 a barrel on Friday, down from $100 a barrel (-8%) the week before.

Florida gas prices surged 21 cents per gallon last week as rising crude oil prices pushed fuel costs higher nationwide. Friday's state average of $4.33 per gallon was the highest daily price since May 2026. Prices edged lower through the weekend, settling at $4.30 per gallon on Sunday.

The increase in pump prices comes as crude oil prices continue to climb. Oil prices rose by as much as 27% during the past three weeks, with Tuesday's closing price of $105.83 per barrel marking the highest daily settlement since May.   "Rising oil prices contributed to the latest jump at the pump," said Mark Jenkins, spokesman for AAA - The Auto Club Group. "Ongoing tensions in the Middle East have created uncertainty about global oil supplies. That uncertainty has placed renewed upward pressure on oil prices. Since oil accounts for about half the price of gasoline, higher crude costs are making their way to gas stations nationwide." 

Oil prices remain volatile, and future movement at the pump will largely depend on developments in global oil markets. 

Drivers are now paying about $65 to fill an average-sized 15-gallon gas tank. That's roughly $6 more than a month ago and nearly $20 more than this time last year.

How Dangerous Can a Tailgating Grill Be?

Tailgating in crowded parking lots puts open flames, hot coals, propane tanks, and flammable materials just feet away from vehicles and people. Unlike backyard grilling, tailgates often take place in tight spaces where a small flare-up can quickly spread to nearby vehicles, tents, coolers, and other equipment.

To reduce the risk of fire, AAA recommends:

• Position your grill away from vehicles, tents, and other flammable gear.
• Keep a fire extinguisher within arm's reach.
• Never leave a lit grill unattended, even briefly.

When is a Tailgating Grill No Longer a Fire Hazard?

One of the biggest tailgating fire risks can emerge after fans head into the stadium. Hot coals, grease trays, and recently extinguished grills can remain dangerous long after the cooking is done.

In 2022, a tailgating fire at Hard Rock Stadium in Miami destroyed 11 vehicles after an unattended grill ignited a blaze beneath a parked car while many fans were inside watching the game.

"Many fans assume the danger ends when the cooking stops," Jenkins said. "But hot coals and grills can remain dangerous long after kickoff. Taking a few extra minutes to shut everything down properly can prevent a fire and thousands of dollars in damage."

Before leaving the tailgate, AAA urges fans to:

• Fully extinguish all flames and coals.
• Allow grills and grease trays to cool completely in an open area.
• Never place hot grilling equipment inside a vehicle.
• Dispose of ashes in a metal container with a lid.
• Never dump ashes on the ground or into plastic bags.
• Do a final walk-around to check for smoke, embers, leaking fuel, or hot equipment.
• Secure the grill before transporting it.

These simple steps can help prevent vehicle fires, property damage, and costly insurance claims.

How Can Fans Avoid an Impaired Driving Crash After Tailgating?

Impaired driving remains one of the most serious risks associated with tailgating. Nearly one-third of all traffic fatalities involve an alcohol-impaired driver. While fans often focus on getting to the stadium safely, AAA reminds them that planning a safe trip home is just as important.

AAA recommends:

• Designate a sober driver before festivities begin.
• Offer water and non-alcoholic beverages throughout the event.
• Use rideshare services or alternative transportation if needed.
• Never allow an impaired friend or family member to get behind the wheel.

"Fans spend a lot of time planning where they'll park, what they'll cook, and who they'll cheer for," Jenkins said. "They should spend just as much time planning how they'll get home. A football game lasts a few hours. The consequences of an impaired-driving crash can last a lifetime."

Many Florida children may be riding less safely than their parents realize, according to new research released by AAA ahead of Child Passenger Safety Week.

AAA found that many children are moving to booster seats and seat belts before they're ready, while many child restraints are not being used correctly.

Data collected during child passenger safety inspections in 2025 found that 95% of Florida children had moved to an adult seat belt before it fit correctly, while 32% had transitioned to a booster seat too soon.

The same research found that 72% of child restraints inspected in Florida were being used incorrectly. Common issues such as loose harness straps, poor seat belt fit, or improper installation can reduce the protection a child restraint is designed to provide during a crash.

This research is based on child passenger safety inspections conducted by certified Child Passenger Safety Technicians across Florida and nationwide.

National crash data also shows child restraint use declines sharply as children get older. Between 2020 and 2024, 78% of injured 3-year-olds involved in crashes were riding in a car seat or booster seat. By age 6, that figure dropped to 45%.

"Parents would never knowingly put their child at risk, but many don't realize a seat belt that looks like it fits may not actually provide the protection their child needs," said Mark Jenkins, spokesman for AAA – The Auto Club Group. "At the same time, even the right seat can't do its job if it's installed incorrectly or the harness isn't properly secured. Before your next trip, take a few moments to check both fit and installation."

Why Does Proper Car Seat Use Matter?

Children can lose important crash protection when they move from a car seat to a booster seat, or from a booster seat to an adult seat belt, before they're physically ready.

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, car seats reduce the risk of fatal injury by 71% for infants and 54% for toddlers in passenger cars. Those benefits depend on using the right restraint and using it correctly.

How Do Parents Know When a Child Is Ready for an Adult Seat Belt?

Many children need a booster seat longer than parents realize.

A child is generally ready to stop using a booster seat only when:

• Their knees bend naturally at the edge of the vehicle seat
• The lap belt fits low across the hips and upper thighs
• The shoulder belt rests across the middle of the chest and shoulder
• They can remain seated correctly for the entire trip

If any of these conditions are not met, a booster seat is still needed.

As Labor Day marks the unofficial end of summer, AAA says now is the time for travelers to begin planning their Thanksgiving, Christmas and New Year's vacations.

According to a new AAA travel survey, one-quarter (26%) of Floridians begin planning holiday trips during September and October, while only 10% wait until November or December.

For many travelers, cost is driving those decisions. The survey found that budget concerns (41%) and waiting for lower prices (36%) are the leading reasons travelers delay booking trips. Yet that strategy often backfires. Nearly half (49%) of residents said they delayed booking a trip and later paid more than they would have if they booked earlier. Fifteen percent paid significantly more, while 34% paid somewhat more.

"Many travelers hope to find a better deal by waiting, but that strategy doesn't always pay off," said Mark Jenkins, spokesman for AAA - The Auto Club Group. "You don't need to book the first itinerary you find, but now is a good time to research your options, compare prices, and make decisions before availability becomes more limited. That's especially important for air travel, where fares can change quickly, and rising fuel costs could put additional pressure on ticket prices."

The survey also found that staying within budget and finding the best price are travelers' biggest sources of planning stress. Overspending is the most common travel-planning regret, followed by waiting too long to book.

Florida gas prices went back above $4 a gallon for the first time since June 1, 2026, as rising oil prices continue to drive up the cost of gasoline.

"Tensions in the Middle East intensified last week, causing oil prices to surge and increasing the cost of producing gasoline," said Mark Jenkins, spokesman for AAA - The Auto Club Group. "Florida drivers are now seeing those higher costs reflected at the pump. If oil prices remain elevated, motorists could face additional upward pressure on gas prices this week."

The U.S. price for crude oil has increased nearly 20% over the past two weeks, climbing from $83 per barrel to more than $100 per barrel. Crude oil accounts for more than half the price consumers pay for gasoline.

The recent increase comes on top of Florida's ongoing price-cycling pattern, where pump prices typically spike early in the week before gradually declining through the remainder of the week and weekend. Before the latest run-up in oil prices, these cycle-driven increases generally peaked around $3.99 per gallon. With crude oil now trading above $100 per barrel, the ceiling has moved higher, pushing the state average above $4 per gallon. The state average could climb as high as $4.19 per gallon if oil prices remain elevated.

Where pump prices go from here will largely depend on the oil market. Additional gains in crude oil prices could lead to further increases at the pump, while a pullback in oil prices could help ease upward pressure on motorists.

What Should Drivers Check Before a Labor Day Road Trip?

• Battery
  Summer heat can shorten battery life and weaken performance. Drivers should have their battery tested if it's more than a few years old or showing signs of trouble, such as slow engine starts.
• Tires
  Inspect tires for proper inflation and adequate tread depth. Underinflated or worn tires can increase the risk of a blowout, reduce fuel efficiency and affect vehicle handling. Don't forget to check the spare tire.
• Brakes
  Pay attention to squealing, grinding or vibrations when braking. These warning signs may indicate that service is needed before a long trip.
• Fluids

Although pump prices have fluctuated from week to week, Florida's state average has hovered around $3.92 per gallon over the past 45 days, generally remaining within a narrow range despite volatility in the energy market.

"Drivers have seen gas prices move up and down throughout the summer, but the overall trend has been relatively stable," said Mark Jenkins, spokesman for AAA - The Auto Club Group. "Florida's state average has remained near $3.92 per gallon for the past month and a half, which means motorists are approaching Labor Day with fuel costs that are generally in line with what they've been paying all summer."

While prices have changed little in recent weeks, they're significantly higher than a year ago. Sunday's state average of $3.89 per gallon is about 81 cents more than the $3.08 per gallon Florida drivers paid during the same period last year. For a driver with a 15-gallon tank, that's roughly $12 more per fill-up. 

Despite the higher cost, AAA does not expect fuel prices to deter holiday travelers.

"Gas prices are one factor travelers consider when planning a trip, but they're rarely the deciding factor," Jenkins said. "Many Floridians have been paying around the same price for gas throughout the summer, so there isn't a lot of sticker shock heading into the holiday weekend. People who have planned a Labor Day getaway are generally still taking that trip."

Even Good Dogs Can Distract Drivers

The danger is not limited to a crash. Dogs that move freely around a vehicle can create distractions that pull a driver's attention from the road long before an emergency occurs. Seven in 10 (70%) Florida dog owners report being distracted by behaviors such as barking, seeking attention, moving between seats, and jumping into the front seat.

More than 2 in 5 (43%) of Florida dog owners say their dog's behavior has affected their driving, such as taking their eyes off the road or a hand off the steering wheel, braking or swerving suddenly, or missing a traffic signal.

“Even the best-behaved dog can become a distraction in the car,” Jenkins continued. “A sudden bark, a nudge for attention, or a move toward the front seat can take a driver's focus off the road. Securing your dog helps protect them while allowing you to keep your attention on driving.”

AAA Tips for a Safer Ride with your Dog

AAA encourages dog owners to think about securing dogs the same way they think about buckling up children or fastening their own seat belt before every trip. The goal is to keep the driver focused, keep pets safe, and reduce the risk of injury if traffic stops suddenly or a crash occurs.

• Use vehicle-specific restraints before every trip: Secure dogs in a properly sized restraint, carrier, or crate designed for vehicle use, not a regular walking harness or leash. Use it every time, even for short trips close to home, and choose independently crash-tested products when possible.
• Keep pets out of the front seat: The back seat helps prevent pets from interfering with controls or visibility and keeps them away from front-seat airbags.
• Practice before a longer drive: Let dogs get comfortable with the restraint at home and on short rides so the safety device does not become a new distraction.
• Do not reach for a loose pet while driving: If a dog needs attention, pull over safely before adjusting the restraint, offering water, or calming the pet.
• Plan for stops and temperature safety: Build in breaks on longer trips and never leave a pet unattended in a parked vehicle.

Travelers are paying more for several major components of a Labor Day vacation this year.

AAA booking data shows average domestic airfare is up 2% compared to last year, averaging $750 for a roundtrip ticket. For travelers flying to the most popular Labor Day destinations, airfare is nearly 20% higher than last year, averaging $790.

AAA booking data shows cruises departing from U.S. ports are 4% less expensive than last year, averaging $2,700 per booking. Gas Prices May Be More Expensive Than Last Labor Day

While it's too early to know what gas prices will be on Labor Day weekend, current market trends suggest motorists could pay more than they did a year ago. The national average price of gasoline on Labor Day 2025 was $3.19 per gallon.

Crude oil, which accounts for roughly half the price consumers pay for gasoline, remains more expensive than it was a year ago. Energy analysts also point to strong refinery demand and relatively low crude oil inventories as factors that continue to support higher fuel prices.

For travelers planning a road trip, fuel costs are likely to be another expense to factor into their holiday vacation budget.

Labor Day Traffic Forecast: Best and Worst Times to Travel

INRIX, a provider of transportation data and insights, expects the heaviest congestion to occur Thursday and Friday as holiday travelers share the road with regular commuter traffic.

The worst times to travel are expected to be:

Florida gas prices remain relatively stable, despite rising oil and gasoline futures. The state average for regular unleaded gasoline is $3.86 per gallon, about the same as a week ago.

Meanwhile, the national average edged slightly higher over the past week, rising from $4.07 to $4.10 per gallon.

The price of crude oil rose during the week, going from $84.50 to $87.06 per barrel. At the same time, gasoline futures increased from $3.27 to $3.35 per gallon. Those gains typically put upward pressure on pump prices because fuel retailers pay more for the gasoline they purchase from suppliers.

“Florida drivers didn't see much movement at the pump last week, even though the cost of oil and gasoline futures moved higher,” said Mark Jenkins, spokesman for AAA - The Auto Club Group. “If wholesale fuel costs remain elevated, drivers could begin seeing more upward pressure on pump prices in the coming days.”

Speeding has become so common that many drivers consider going 10 mph over the posted speed limit acceptable, while nearly half believe keeping up with traffic is safer than obeying the speed limit, according to new research from the AAA Foundation for Traffic Safety.

The findings suggest many drivers no longer define speeding by the posted speed limit alone. Three in ten drivers agreed with the statement, "No one actually drives the speed limit," highlighting how speeding has become normalized for many motorists.

Those attitudes come with real consequences. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, speeding was a factor in nearly 30% of traffic fatalities in 2024.

"Too many drivers have convinced themselves that speeding is just part of driving," said Mark Jenkins, spokesman for AAA – The Auto Club Group. "The reality is that crashes don't care what's considered normal. The faster you're going, the less time you have to avoid a dangerous situation."

Why Do Drivers Speed?

The study found drivers most often speed because they:

• Want to get around slower drivers (31%)
• Want to reach their destination faster (25%)
• Don't want to hold up traffic (21%)

The study also found that many drivers don't expect enforcement until they are traveling roughly 10 to 12 mph above the posted speed limit, which may help explain why so many view modest speeding as acceptable.

What Makes Drivers Slow Down?

The threat of a ticket is the strongest incentive for people to slow down. Drivers also said they are most likely to reduce their speed to:

• Avoid getting a ticket (79%)
• Avoid a crash (72%)
• Respond to bad weather (60%)

What Speed Enforcement Measures Do Drivers Support?

Despite growing acceptance of speeding, drivers overwhelmingly support targeted speed enforcement. Additionally:

• 87% support increased police presence in areas with a history of speed-related crashes
• 88% support increased enforcement in areas with the potential for speed-related crashes
• About seven in ten support automated speed enforcement cameras in those locations

Support drops, however, when measures take control away from the driver. While more than 90% believe speed humps are effective, fewer than half support installing them in their own neighborhoods. Drivers also favor warning systems that alert them when they're speeding over technology that actively limits vehicle speed.

"Drivers may not agree on every solution, but they recognize that speeding is a serious safety issue," Jenkins said. "The findings show strong support for targeted enforcement in places where speed-related crashes are happening. That's an important step toward making roads safer."

What Should Drivers Do When Traffic Around Them is Speeding?

"There's a lot of pressure to go with the flow of traffic, especially when everyone around you seems to be speeding," Jenkins said. "But safe driving isn't about matching the fastest vehicle on the road. It's about making sure you have enough time to see a problem, react, and avoid a crash."

AAA recommends drivers choose their speed based on:

• The posted speed limit
• Visibility conditions
• Road and weather conditions
• The amount of space around their vehicle

Florida gas prices slipped lower last week, even as oil prices moved higher. The state average fell 1 cent per gallon, declining from $3.88 last Sunday to $3.87 per gallon yesterday.

Sunday’s state average of $3.87 per gallon is:

• 1 cent less than last week
• 2 cents less than Saturday
• 79 cents more than this time last year

Oil prices rose last week. The U.S. price of crude settled at $82.40 per barrel on Friday. That’s $4.22 per barrel more than the previous Friday, for a 5% weekly increase. Gasoline futures also moved higher, rising 20 cents compared to the week before.

“Florida drivers saw a little relief at the pump last week, even as oil prices moved higher,” said Mark Jenkins, spokesman, AAA - The Auto Club Group. “That could limit how much further pump prices fall in the near term. If crude oil remains elevated, drivers could see renewed upward pressure at the pump.”

The national average moved in the opposite direction, rising 5 cents last week. Sunday’s national average of $4.07 per gallon is up from $4.01 the previous Sunday.

As extreme heat grips Florida, AAA warns of a sharp increase in heat-related dangers, including deadly conditions for children and pets in hot cars, and a higher risk of roadside breakdowns.

On hot summer days, the inside of a parked car can quickly heat up like an oven. Temperatures inside a vehicle can rise by 20 degrees in just 10 minutes. More than 1,000 children have died in hot cars since 1998, according to NoHeatStroke.org, with an average of 37 deaths each year.

Simple Steps That Can Save Lives

AAA urges drivers to build habits that prevent tragedy:

The risk extends to pets. Even with windows cracked, vehicles heat rapidly and can become deadly.

“If you see a pet left in a hot vehicle, call local authorities immediately,” Woodland said.

Heat Also Raises Breakdown Risk

Extreme heat doesn’t just threaten lives. It also increases the likelihood of vehicle failures.

“High temperatures accelerate wear on critical vehicle components,” Woodland said. “That increases the chances of your car failing when you need it most.”

How Weather Can Disrupt Travel

Severe weather can disrupt travel plans in many ways. Hurricanes, wildfires, flooding, and severe storms can:

• Cancel or delay flights
• Close cruise ports and alter itineraries

Air travel is often one of the first parts of a trip affected by severe weather.

Imagine a traveler flying to a cruise departure city when severe weather cancels their flight. The airline may rebook the passenger on a later flight or offer a refund for the canceled flight. However, weather-related disruptions are generally considered outside the airline's control, which may limit additional assistance.

That traveler could still be responsible for:

• An unexpected overnight hotel stay
• Meals during the delay
• Local transportation
• The cost of catching up with the cruise at a later port

Timing Matters with Travel Insurance

Many travelers assume it's too late to buy travel insurance once their trip is only days or weeks away. In many cases, coverage can still be purchased before departure.

Florida gas prices face renewed upward pressure after tensions between the U.S. and Iran escalated over the weekend. Oil prices increased in overnight trading amid uncertainty surrounding the Strait of Hormuz, a key route for global oil shipments. 

In early trading, the U.S. price for crude oil had climbed nearly $2.50 per barrel. That's a 3% increase from Friday's closing price of $71.41/b. 

"Concerns about potential fuel supply disruptions have nudged oil prices higher," said Mark Jenkins, spokesman for AAA - The Auto Club Group. "With tensions in the Middle East adding uncertainty to the global oil market, gas prices could remain volatile in the coming weeks."

The state average price for gasoline declined early last week, then rose 13 cents per gallon. Sunday's state average of $3.82 per gallon was:

AAA Sound Bite

With more than 72 million Americans expected to travel for Independence Day, including 61.4 million who will drive, AAA – The Auto Club Group is activating its Tow to Go program to help keep roads safe and discourage impaired driving.

The free and confidential service will be available from 6 p.m. Friday, July 3, through 6 a.m. Monday, July 6.

"With millions of Americans on the road, even one impaired driver is too many, said Mark Jenkins, spokesman for AAA - The Auto Club Group. "Tow to Go provides a last-resort option that can prevent a tragedy before it happens and ultimately save lives."

AAA’s Tow to Go program offers a free ride for impaired drivers and their vehicles within a 10-mile radius. The service aims to prevent dangerous decisions behind the wheel but should be used as a last resort.

Last year, AAA received more than 687,000 calls for roadside assistance from drivers experiencing car trouble during the Independence Day holiday period. Officials urge drivers to plan ahead, designate a sober driver, or arrange alternative transportation before celebrating.

"Tow to Go is there if you need it, but it’s not a substitute for proper planning," Jenkins said. "The safest choice is always to arrange a ride before you go out."

Florida gas prices are declining as 4.6 million Floridians prepare to travel for Independence Day. The majority of them (4.08 million) will take a road trip. View AAA's Independence Day travel forecast for Florida.

Last year on Independence Day, Florida drivers paid an average price of $3.11 per gallon. While it's unlikely the state average will drift lower than that in time for this year's holiday, the state average should test 2024 levels, which was $3.53 per gallon.  

Florida gas prices are on a streak of declines. Through the last 11 days, the state average fell 32 cents per gallon. That cuts the cost of filling an average-size gas tank by nearly $5.

Falling gasoline prices have been influenced by a drop in the cost of crude oil. As a reminder, oil prices influence about half of what drivers pay at the gas pump. US oil prices fell 16% during the past two weeks, on the hope that an agreement between the U.S. and Iran would lead to the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz. Since an agreement was announced last weekend, oil prices dropped $8.28 per barrel (10%) and Florida's average gas price declined 20 cents per gallon.

"Florida’s state average is now the lowest since early March," said Mark Jenkins, spokesman for AAA - The Auto Club Group. "Lower gas prices come at an ideal time for summer travel and offer some financial relief for drivers. Still, the outlook remains uncertain. AAA projects more than 4.6 million Floridians will travel at least 50 miles from home for the Independence Day holiday travel period, which runs from Saturday, June 27 through Sunday, July 5. Most travelers will take to the road, with more than 4 million Floridians driving to their destinations. Air travel remains steady, while cruising and other modes of transportation see the strongest growth.

While this year’s increase is modest compared to recent gains, it still sets a record for Fourth of July travel in Florida, as strong consumer demand continues to offset higher travel costs.

“For many families, traveling for Independence Day isn’t just a trip, it’s a tradition,” said Debbie Haas, Vice President of Travel for AAA – The Auto Club Group. “Vacations are one category where consumers are still willing to spend, even if that means cutting back on something else. With an extended holiday travel period, we expect busy roads, steady demand for flights, and continued interest in cruises across many parts of the country.”

Rather than staying home, many travelers are choosing to offset higher travel costs by:

• Taking shorter vacations
• Choosing destinations closer to home
• Closely comparing the cost of driving vs flying
• Planning a cruise or all-inclusive resort where costs are more defined
• Cutting back on extras like eating out and souvenirs

This flexibility helps sustain overall travel volume, even when prices increase. For those who haven’t finalized their plans, it’s not too late to work with a travel agent to find last-minute options or savings.

National Travel Figures are Slightly Higher Than Last Year

Florida’s growth reflects a broader national trend. AAA projects 72.2 million Americans to travel during the Independence Day holiday period, setting another record despite a slower pace of growth. This year’s projection is only a half-percent increase from last year as rising inflationary pressures take a toll.

Independence Day Travelers by Mode of Transportation

By Car: AAA projects 61.4 million people will travel by car over July 4th week, nearly the same number as last year when 61.3 million travelers took road trips. 85% of Americans traveling for Independence Day are expected to drive to their destinations.

Gas Prices: Given the recent volatility in gas prices, it’s too early to know what drivers will pay at the pump on Independence Day. As of Tuesday, June 16, Florida drivers are paying an average price of around $3.78 per gallon. During last year’s holiday, the state average was $3.11/g. By Air: More than 5.8 million travelers will take domestic flights over the July 4th week, a 0.2% increase over last year. Air travelers account for 8% of holiday travelers. According to AAA data, which is based on what travelers paid when they booked their Independence Day trips, round-trip domestic flights to top destinations like Chicago and Denver are 5% more expensive. Domestic flights overall are averaging about $830 a ticket.

By Other Modes: Travel by other modes is seeing the biggest year-over-year growth compared to car and air travel. AAA projects 4.93 million Americans will take buses, trains, and cruises over Independence Day week, a 5.3% increase from last year. This year is also expected to surpass 2019’s figure of 4.79 million travelers, due in large part to the post-COVID cruising boom. Travelers are drawn to cruise vacations because they know how much the trip will cost upfront, and the ship offers all-inclusive dining, various entertainment options, and multiple destinations.

Car Rentals: For travelers renting cars over July 4th, AAA car rental partner Hertz expects Thursday, July 2 to be the busiest pickup day. Hertz says Orlando, Denver, Boston, Los Angeles, and New York City are the cities with the highest demand based on advanced bookings. According to AAA booking data, domestic car rentals are 10% more expensive this holiday week compared to last year. AAA members receive discounted car rental rates when booking with Hertz.

AAA’s Top Independence Day Destinations

Travelers who booked their trips with AAA are heading to major U.S. cities over July 4th week and flying internationally to Canada and Europe. AAA travel agents have seen a surge in demand for cruises to Alaska, which is why Seattle, Anchorage, and Fairbanks are all top domestic destinations. Independence Day fireworks and festivities in New York, Chicago, and Boston also draw big crowds. Florida ranks high thanks to theme parks, beaches, and cruise ports. On the international side, Vancouver tops the list, followed by major European cities like Rome, Dublin, Paris, and London.

Summer Safety on the Road

Impaired Driving: July 4th week can be especially dangerous on the road with more teen drivers behind the wheel and a rise in impaired driving due to holiday festivities. That’s why AAA is urging drivers to commit to 100 Days of Safe Driving this summer. According to AAA crash data analysis, nearly one in three summertime traffic deaths involves an impaired driver. AAA, in partnership with MADD, reminds anyone who plans to drink or use impairing substances to arrange a sober ride before going out. The Auto Club Group will provide its Tow to Go program in select states from 6 pm Friday, July 3rd to 6 am Monday, July 6th.

AAA Roadside Response: Drivers preparing to take road trips should also prioritize car maintenance and stay on top of routine oil changes, plus check battery condition and tire pressure. Last year, AAA responded to more than 687,000 roadside assistance calls during Independence Day week. Half of those required towing services, and nearly 30% of those calls were for battery replacement and flat tires. Many of these issues could be prevented with a pre-trip inspection. Slow Down Move Over: While on the road, AAA reminds drivers to Slow Down, Move Over when approaching emergency responders and stranded motorists on the side of the road. Nationwide, nearly 350 people are struck and killed while outside a disabled vehicle each year. Drivers can save lives if they make it a priority to move over for all vehicles on the roadside, regardless of whether it is a tow provider with flashing lights or a driver of a disabled vehicle with its hazard lights on.

Best/Worst Times to Drive

INRIX, a provider of transportation data and insights, says the second weekend of the holiday period will be the busiest on the roads, starting Thursday, July 2. But in certain metros, like Boston, Los Angeles, and Philadelphia, peak congestion is expected Saturday, June 27. Drivers looking to avoid the heaviest traffic should leave early in the day or consider traveling on Monday or Tuesday.

Independence Day Holiday Travel Period

AAA’s Independence Day holiday travel period spans nine days and includes two weekends. This year, the dates range from Saturday, June 27 to Sunday, July 5. Historically, this holiday period included only one weekend. The expanded travel window was instituted starting in 2024, with historical results calculated back to 2019 using the new nine-day period.  

Holiday Travel Forecast Methodology

In cooperation with AAA, S&P Global Market Intelligence (SPGMI) developed a unique methodology to forecast actual domestic travel volumes. The economic variables used to forecast travel for the current holiday are leveraged from SPGMI’s proprietary databases. These data include macroeconomic drivers such as employment, output, household net worth, asset prices including stock indices, interest rates, housing market indicators, and variables related to travel and tourism, including gasoline prices, airline travel, and hotel stays. AAA and SPGMI have quantified holiday travel volumes going back to 2000.

Historical travel volume estimates come from MMGY’s TRAVEL PERFORMANCE/MonitorSM. The PERFORMANCE/MonitorSM is a comprehensive study measuring the travel behavior of U.S. residents. MMGY contacts over 50,000 U.S. households each month to obtain detailed travel data, resulting in the unique ability to estimate visitor volume and spending, identify trends, and forecast U.S. travel behavior, all after the trips have been taken. 

The travel forecast is reported in person-trips. In particular, AAA and SPGMI forecast the total U.S. holiday travel volume and expected mode of transportation. The travel forecast presented in this report was finalized the week of May 18, 2026.

Because AAA holiday forecasts focus on domestic leisure travel only, comparisons to TSA passenger screening numbers should not be made. TSA data includes all passengers traveling on both domestic and international routes, whether traveling for work or leisure. Additionally, TSA screens passengers each time they enter secured areas of the airport, therefore each one-way trip is counted as a passenger tally. AAA focuses on person-trips, which include the full round-trip travel itinerary. As a result, direct comparisons of AAA forecast volumes and daily TSA screenings represent different factors.

AAA is lowering insurance rates again in Florida. The Auto Club Group announced rate reductions of up to 5% for AAA-branded home and auto insurance policies. This delivers more than $28 million in annual savings for policyholders in the state.

“People know AAA for roadside assistance, but we also provide insurance that protects our members every day,” said Jennifer Pintacuda, President of AAA’s Florida-based insurance companies. “We’ve lowered our rates multiple times over the past year, and this latest decrease reflects our commitment to offering competitive, affordable insurance coverage for Floridians.”

Auto insurance rate reductions

AAA implemented an average 5% decrease for monoline auto policies through Auto Club South Insurance Company (ACSIC) and an average 4% decrease for package auto policies through Auto Club Insurance Company of Florida (ACICF).

These changes deliver more than $16 million in annual savings to over 133,000 policyholders statewide.

Policyholders began seeing the latest rate changes reflected in new policies June 1. Renewal policies will reflect the changes beginning August 1. Drivers with full coverage may see greater savings due to deeper reductions in physical damage coverages.

Homeowner insurance rate reductions

Earlier this year, AAA adjusted rates on its Select Package Home program, resulting in an average 5% reduction. These changes translate to more than $12 million in annual savings across 86,000 policies in Florida.

The updated rates took effect:

• March 1, 2026 for new business
• May 1, 2026 for renewal policies

Growing trend of lower rates

The latest decreases build on a broader trend of rate reductions as Florida’s insurance market stabilizes.

In 2025, AAA implemented three auto rate reductions and one home rate reduction. These actions:

• Reduced auto premiums by more than 15% and home premiums by 5% for many policyholders
• Delivered more than $70 million in annual savings to Florida customers

Why insurance rates are decreasing in Florida

AAA says improving conditions in Florida’s insurance market have made these reductions possible.

Recent legal reforms have helped stabilize the claims environment by:

• Reducing litigation
• Curbing fraud
• Improving predictability in claims costs

As a result, insurers can better manage risk and pass savings along to policyholders.

“Crude prices dropped overnight after the United States and Iran announced an agreement to reopen the Strait of Hormuz,” said Mark Jenkins, spokesman for AAA – The Auto Club Group. “This is an encouraging sign for drivers, as lower oil prices typically lead to lower prices at the pump. However, this remains a fluid situation, and it’s unclear how quickly or how much gas prices may fall.”

Sunday night, crude oil traded around $80 per barrel, down about 5% from Friday’s closing price of $84.88.

When the U.S.-Iran conflict began, oil traded near $67 per barrel. As tensions escalated, crude eventually climbed to a high of $112.95 in early April. During that time, Florida’s average price for gasoline rose from $2.91 per gallon to a high of $4.52/g, increasing the cost of filling a 15-gallon tank by nearly $25.

The Strait of Hormuz could reopen Friday, when the agreement is expected to be signed, but market conditions may take time to stabilize. Resuming shipping traffic and restoring confidence among insurers and global markets could take weeks or longer.

“Oil prices have declined in recent weeks as the market becomes more confident that tensions between the U.S. and Iran are easing,” said Mark Jenkins, spokesman, AAA – The Auto Club Group. “There’s growing optimism that negotiations will restore tanker traffic through the Strait of Hormuz, which is critical for global oil supplies.” 

The recent drop in gas prices follows a sharp decline in oil prices over the past few weeks. Crude prices fell roughly 18% over a two-week period, before rising about 4% last week, reflecting continued volatility in the global energy market.

At the same time, gasoline futures declined 66 cents per gallon, lowering the wholesale cost of fuel for retailers. As stations receive shipments of lower-priced fuel, those savings are gradually passed along to drivers at the pump. Despite the recent downward trend, oil prices remain sensitive to global developments, and short-term increases remain possible.

Drivers should also be aware that gas prices in Florida often follow a weekly price cycle. Retailers typically lower prices to remain competitive, but once prices reach a level that is no longer sustainable, they raise them to restore margins. This reset can happen quickly and often leads to sudden price increases at the start of the week, with prices commonly jumping on Monday afternoons. As a result, even as gas prices are trending lower overall, drivers may still see short-term increases during the week.

Florida gas prices are declining amid optimism in the fuel market, sparked by international peace talks. The state average price for gasoline is on a streak of declines, falling 46 cents per gallon over the past 11 days.

Sunday's state average of $4.07 per gallon is:

• 96 cents more than this time last year

Florida gas prices are moving lower as nearly 2.6 million Floridians prepare to travel for Memorial Day weekend. According to AAA's holiday travel forecast, more than 2.3 million Floridians will take a holiday road trip.

Last week, Florida gas prices declined 20 cents per gallon. The state average fell from $4.43/g to $4.23/g on Sunday. The average price travelers paid on Memorial Day 2025 was $3.06 per gallon.  

"Memorial Day travelers will pay about $17 more than last year to fill an average sized tank of gas," said Mark Jenkins, spokesman for AAA - The Auto Club Group. "Global supply concerns regarding the conflict with Iran has kept upward pressure on fuel prices. This could continue through the summer months unless a resolution is reached."

Florida gas prices could jump early this week, based on recent gains in the oil market. The US price of oil incrased $10 per barrel (10%) to $105.42/b last week. Gasoline futures also climbed 18 cents per gallon. Retail prices have also followed a trend of declining for 10 days before rebounding on Monday afternoon.

Most Florida travelers will take road trips, with more than 2.3 million expected to drive. Another 236,000 will fly, while nearly 75,000 will travel by other modes such as bus, train, or cruise.

While travel volumes continue to climb, the increase from last year remains limited. Florida travel rose slightly year over year, reflecting a broader national trend of record-setting travel numbers paired with slower growth.

Nationally, AAA expects nearly 45 million Americans to travel over the Memorial Day holiday, the highest total on record. However, year-over-year growth remains less than one percent.

“Memorial Day travel is still reaching record levels, but with the smallest year-over-year increase in more than a decade,” said Mark Jenkins, spokesman for AAA – The Auto Club Group. “Although travel demand remains strong, higher fuel prices and persistent inflation may cause some travelers to shorten trips, delay plans, or stay closer to home.”

Memorial Day Travelers by Mode of Transportation

By Car:

Nationally, driving remains the most popular way to travel this Memorial Day weekend. AAA projects 39.1 million people will travel by car, a slight jump over last year.

A holiday road trip will cost more at the gas pump this year. Florida gas prices are averaging $4.43 per gallon. Last year, the state average was $3.06 per gallon on Memorial Day. With heavier traffic expected, AAA urges drivers to Slow Down, Move Over for disabled vehicles and roadside responders. During last year’s Memorial Day weekend, AAA responded to more than 350,000 emergency roadside assistance calls nationwide to help stranded drivers with issues like dead batteries, flat tires, and empty fuel tanks. AAA encourages drivers to check their tires, battery, and fluid levels before hitting the road.

For travelers renting cars over Memorial Day weekend, AAA car rental partner Hertz says Thursday and Friday are expected to be the busiest pick-up days. The top 5 markets with the highest demand are Orlando, Las Vegas, Los Angeles, Denver, and Boston. According to AAA booking data, domestic car rentals are 1% cheaper this holiday weekend compared to last year. By Air:

Air travelers make up 8% of the share of travelers this holiday weekend. AAA projects 3.66 million travelers will fly domestically over the holiday weekend, a small increase over last year. According to AAA booking data, travelers who booked flights in advance paid about six percent less than last year, with an average ticket costing $800. However, more recent airfare trends may reflect rising fuel costs.

“Travel costs remain a mixed picture this year,” said Debbie Haas, Vice President of Travel for AAA The Auto Club Group. “Travelers who booked early may have secured lower airfares, but rising fuel costs are putting upward pressure on prices. By Other Modes:

Travel by bus, train, and cruise will increase by more than 5% to 2.2 million travelers. The growth reflects expanded cruise capacity and continued demand for Alaska itineraries.

Best/Worst Times to Drive and Peak Congestion by Metro

Florida gas prices are edging lower after climbing to their highest level in nearly four years last week. 

The state average jumped 20 cents per gallon, peaking at $4.50 on Thursday. That marked the highest daily average since July 2022. The increase followed sharp gains in the futures market over the previous two weeks, including a 21% rise in oil prices and a 59-cent jump in wholesale gasoline.

Prices began to ease through the weekend. The state average fell 9 cents, bringing Sunday's price to $4.43 per gallon. Market conditions shifted late last week on renewed optimism around U.S.-Iran negotiations. Reports that talks could lead to a gradual reopening of the Straight of Hormuz helped push prices down 6%. Based on additional moves in the futures market, another price hike could be on the way, but not quite as dramatic as a week ago. Last week, U.S. crude oil prices rose another 8%, while gasoline futures gained 13 cents. 

Since the Iranian conflict, Florida's average price rose $1.46 per gallon, going from $2.88 per gallon to $4.34/g. That adds $22 to the cost for an average-sized tank of gas.

Gas Price Survey Methodology

AAA updates fuel price averages daily at www.GasPrices.AAA.com. Every day up to 130,000 stations are surveyed based on credit card swipes and direct feeds in cooperation with the Oil Price Information Service (OPIS) and Wright Express for unmatched statistical reliability. All average retail prices in this report are for a gallon of regular, unleaded gasoline.

As National Hurricane Preparedness Week begins, AAA – The Auto Club Group is releasing a new survey of Florida residents, measuring their level of concern and preparedness for hurricane season.

According to the AAA survey, nearly 1-in-5 (18%) Florida residents are more concerned about this year’s hurricane season than last year. When asked what type of damage they are most worried about, residents cited:

• 48% - Falling trees or wind-blown debris
• 46% - Prolonged power outages
• 46% - Structural damage from high winds
• 34% - Tornadoes spawned by the storm
• 32% - Flooding from heavy rainfall
• 18% - Storm surge

“Hurricane season brings a lot of unknowns, especially when people think about wind, flooding, and extended power outages,” said Mark Jenkins, spokesman for AAA – The Auto Club Group. “While you cannot control the storm, you can control how prepared you are. A solid plan and the right insurance coverage go a long way toward peace of mind.”

Advanced Preparations

• 23% have not made any advance preparations for hurricane season
• 54% only make preparations if there is a hurricane approaching their area

To help address those gaps, AAA partnered with the Insurance Institute for Business & Home Safety to provide a Hurricane Ready guide, designed to help residents prepare well before storms form.

“Delaying preparations creates unnecessary risk,” said Jenkins. “Waiting until a hurricane forms is not the time to figure out your insurance coverage, evacuation plans, or home vulnerabilities. Those decisions need to happen well before a storm enters the forecast.”

Supplies Get More Attention Than Insurance

Floridians who have begun preparations seem to be prioritizing physical supplies over ensuring they have adequate insurance protection:

• 44% purchased emergency supplies
• 40% stocked extra food and water
• Only 26% reviewed their insurance coverage
• Just 14% reviewed evacuation routes

“It’s encouraging that people are stocking up, but preparation does not stop at batteries and bottled water,” Jenkins said. “Insurance decisions, evacuation routes, and home protections take time, and those choices are hardest to make once a storm is already headed your way.”

Insurance Awareness Gaps are Widespread

Nearly one in four (23%) Floridians still do not know that homeowners insurance does not typically cover flood damage. And when asked about their own policies, 41% suspect they have coverage gaps or are unsure what their insurance covers.

“Flood damage remains one of the biggest financial shocks after hurricanes,” Jenkins said. “Since most policies require a 30-day waiting period, if you wait until a storm is on the way, you won’t have coverage in time.”

Hurricane Insurance Essentials

AAA recommends Floridians review these coverage areas now:

• Flood Insurance: Flooding from storm surge and heavy rainfall remains a leading cause of hurricane-related losses, yet flood insurance requires advance purchase. Homeowners, renters, and condo owners can all carry flood coverage.
• Comprehensive Auto Insurance: Comprehensive auto coverage protects vehicles from flooding, falling debris, and wind damage. Without it, drivers may face total losses with no reimbursement.
• Hurricane Deductibles: Florida homeowners often overlook hurricane deductibles, which are calculated as a percentage of the home’s insured value rather than a flat dollar amount. Understanding that deductible before a storm forms can prevent costly surprises after landfall.

Strengthen Your Home Before the Storm Comes

AAA – The Auto Club Group partnered with the Insurance Institute for Business & Home Safety (IBHS) to provide residents with science-backed guidance to fortify homes against hurricane damage. IBHS research shows that strengthening key parts of a home can significantly reduce wind and water intrusion. The AAA–IBHS Hurricane Ready guide turns that research into practical actions homeowners can take based on time, budget, and risk.

IBHS recommends upgrades based on time and budget, including:

• Sealing gaps and securing outdoor items
• Improving roof, garage door, and window defenses
• Installing impact-rated openings or FORTIFIED Roof systems
• Considering backup power options to manage extended outages

“Hurricanes test a home’s weakest points,” Jenkins said. “IBHS research shows that strengthening those vulnerable areas can dramatically improve how a home performs in severe weather.”

AAA urges Floridians to:

• Review homeowners, renters, flood, and auto insurance coverage
• Understand hurricane deductibles before storms form
• Create an evacuation plan and identify routes and destinations
• Secure their homes using proven, science-based guidance
• Take photos or video of their home and personal belongings

“Hurricanes are unpredictable,” Jenkins said. “Preparation is not. The actions people take now often determine how well they recover later.”

About the AAA Consumer Pulse™ Survey

The AAA Consumer Pulse™ Survey was conducted online among 400 Florida residents from April 17 – 26, 2026. Survey results have a maximum margin of error of ± 4.9% points. Responses are weighted by age and gender to ensure a reliable and accurate representation of the adult population (18+) in Florida.

To better understand those real-world impacts, AAA tested six vehicles, three EVs and three hybrids, across cold, moderate, and hot temperatures. The results provided a clearer picture of what drivers can expect when temperature swings factor into everyday driving and long-term ownership.

“This study gives drivers real‑world insight as the weather heats up,” said Mark Jenkins, spokesperson for AAA – The Auto Club Group. “Cold temperatures had the biggest impact overall, but our testing shows hot weather also reduces efficiency and pushes operating costs higher across both EVs and hybrids.”

Key findings

Impact of hot temperatures (95°F):  

• Hybrid vehicles experience a 12.0% decrease in fuel efficiency (miles per gallon, MPG).
• EVs show a 10.4% reduction in efficiency (MPGe, miles per gallon of gasoline equivalent) and an 8.5% loss of driving range compared to moderate temperature (75°F) conditions.

Impact of cold temperatures (20°F):  

• Hybrids lose 22.8% in fuel economy.
• EVs demonstrate a 35.6% drop in MPGe and a 39.0% decrease in calculated driving range.  

Impacts of hot temperatures (95°F) on operating costs:  

• Hybrid operating costs increased by $13.02 per 1,000 mi.
• For EVs using home charging, operating costs rose by $6.78 per 1,000 mi, while public charging costs climbed $16.25 per 1,000 mi.  

Impacts of cold temperatures (20°F) on operating costs:  

• Hybrids showed an increase in fuel cost of $28.44 per 1,000 miles.
• EVs experienced an increase in operating costs of $32.11 per 1,000 miles when charged at home electricity rates and $76.93 per 1,000 miles when using public charging.  

Powertrain cost comparison: 

• Cold operation (20°F) showed the largest cost gap: EVs cost $36.19 less per 1,000 miles at home electricity rates, but $86.26 more using public chargers than hybrids.
• At high temperatures (95°F), EVs were $46.11 cheaper per 1,000 miles at home electricity rates, but $41.00 more expensive at public charging rates compared to hybrids. 

“These results show there is no one‑size‑fits‑all answer when it comes to electrified vehicles,” Jenkins said. “Where you live, how you charge, and the conditions you drive in can make a meaningful difference in efficiency and cost over time.”

Survey: More Consumers Prefer Hybrid to Fully Electric Vehicles

AAA also surveyed U.S. drivers to assess attitudes toward electrified vehicles. The results show hybrids continue to attract more interest than fully electric models.

About 35 percent of U.S. adults said they are likely or very likely to choose a hybrid for their next vehicle (new or used). Proponents of hybrids most frequently cite reduced range anxiety and charging concerns.

While the number of public charging stations nationwide has increased from about 55,000 in 2022 to roughly 80,000 today, hesitation remains. Consumers who are interested in fully electric vehicles cite benefits such as lower fuel costs, reduced environmental impact and lower maintenance expenses, but hybrids continue to appeal to drivers seeking greater convenience and flexibility.

What Drivers Should Consider

AAA urges drivers to factor climate and charging access into vehicle decisions.

• Expect reduced EV range and higher energy use during extreme hot and cold weather.
• Budget for higher winter operating costs, especially when relying on public charging.
• Use strategies such as preconditioning the cabin while plugged in, maintaining proper tire pressure, and moderating speeds during temperature extremes.
• Recognize that home charging plays a major role in keeping EV operating costs lower year‑round.
