"E-Rides are among the most exciting new developments in both personal mobility and transportation freedom, and are already reshaping our roadways," said Skyler McKinley, regional director of public affairs for AAA - The Auto Club Group. "Still, as with any transformational technology, parents are often left to figure out what's safe, what's allowed, and what rules to set. AAA's E-Ride Ready campaign helps close that gap."

At the center of the campaign is The Auto Club Group's new E-Ride Safety Guide, a comprehensive free resource that helps families:

• Understand how e-bikes and e-scooters operate
• Choose helmets designed for the speed and type of device
• Identify where riders can safely and legally ride
   
• Set clear safety expectations before a child's first ride:
  • Wear a helmet every ride
  • No phone use and no earbuds
  • No riding at night without lights
  • No passengers

This campaign comes amid growing nationwide concern about injuries involving young e-riders. An April 2026 U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission report found emergency-department visits tied to micromobility products rose from an estimated 37,300 in 2017 to 149,100 in 2024, roughly a fourfold increase. Over that eight-year period, CPSC estimated 698,500 total visits and recorded at least 533 deaths, with annual deaths climbing from 5 in 2017 to 135 in 2024. Medical experts say e-ride crashes commonly involve vehicles, pedestrians, and fixed objects such as curbs and mailboxes. 

Helmets save lives

Helmets significantly reduce the risk of serious head injuries, per medical experts. Still, many young riders go without one – or use helmets that aren't designed for higher-speed devices.

"Helmets can make all the difference in a crash," McKinley said. "Parents should make sure riders wear a properly fitted helmet on every ride and ensure it matches the speed and capabilities of the device. AAA's new E-Ride Safety Guide helps families understand the different standards – and when they apply." 

E-Ride laws vary by location

Confusion about e-bike and e-scooter laws can create additional risk for families. Rules governing rider age, helmet requirements, and where devices can operate often vary widely by jurisdiction. 

Federal law generally defines a low-speed e-bike as a two- or three-wheeled vehicle with fully operable pedals, a motor less than 750 watts, and top assisted speeds ranging from 20 to 28 miles per hour, depending on classification. Some higher-speed devices commonly used by teens may fall outside traditional e-bike classifications altogether and require a driver's license and registration.

North Dakota law at a glance:

• E-bikes are classified as bicycles, not motor vehicles, so state law does not require a driver's license, registration, or insurance.
• North Dakota recognizes three classes: Class 1 and Class 2 stop providing motor assistance at 20 mph and Class 3 at 28 mph.
• Every e-bike sold in the state must carry a label showing its class, top assisted speed, and motor wattage.
• Class 3 e-bikes must be equipped with a working speedometer.
• North Dakota sets no minimum age to operate an e-bike of any class.
• Anyone under 18 must wear a helmet while operating a Class 3 e-bike.
• E-bikes of all classes may ride wherever bicycles are allowed, including bicycle and multi-use paths, unless a local jurisdiction prohibits it.
• Sidewalk riding is generally permitted unless restricted locally, and riders should yield to pedestrians and give an audible signal before passing.
• Local governments may set their own rules, so where you can legally ride changes from one jurisdiction to the next.
• E-bikes that are modified or exceed the class limits, meaning over 750 watts or the class speed caps, are treated as mopeds or motorcycles and may require registration and a license.
• Motorists must treat an e-bike like any other vehicle on the road and give it room. They must move fully left to pass and stay there until well clear.
• North Dakota's driver's manual calls for at least three feet when passing a bicyclist, and AAA urges drivers to give e-bike and e-scooter riders the same margin. 

AAA encourages families to fully review their state and local laws before allowing children or teens to ride. The E-Ride Safety Guide also highlights safe riding locations and encourages families to prioritize environments with less traffic and fewer hazards.

"Anybody who's spent any time as a pedestrian will tell you just how scary it can be out there," said Skyler McKinley, regional director of public affairs for AAA. "It's not uncommon to deal with two to three close calls on any given walk. Remember: Everybody is a pedestrian at least once daily, and the most frequent pedestrians are among our most vulnerable neighbors, including children and the elderly."

The pedestrian fatality rate in the United States is two to five times higher than those of other middle- and high-income countries, and up to 10 times higher than the safest countries. What's worse, the U.S. rate has been increasing while others decrease consistently. In North Dakota, a pedestrian is involved in a crash once every three days. 

Common characteristics of urban arterial roads:

• Lots of traffic - These roads handle more cars and buses than smaller neighborhood streets. 
  
   
• Fewer Stops - They typically have traffic lights at widely spaced intersections instead of stop signs to keep traffic flowing, thereby limiting the availability of safe, accessible options for crossing safely as a pedestrian.
  
   
• Multiple Lanes - Arterials have more than one lane in each direction or several lanes moving in the same direction, thereby increasing speeds and making them much more difficult for pedestrians to cross.
  
   
• Access to key areas - They connect to highways, downtown areas, shopping centers, and other high-traffic destinations. 

Additional findings from AAA's new research: 

• Most pedestrian fatalities occurred well outside of the downtown core - and more than half happened more than 4 miles from the city center.
  
   
• Pedestrian crashes resulting in injuries and fatalities disproportionately occurred in socially and economically disadvantaged neighborhoods. 
  
  • These are neighborhoods with older housing and greater diversity of land use.
    
     
  • Many who live or work in these communities rely on walking for daily transportation or to access transit.
    
     
  • They are forced to walk in poorly lit areas with poor or no sidewalks and long distances between safe places to cross.

"Let's be crystal clear about one thing: We're not going to put a stop to these tragedies by simply urging drivers and pedestrians to 'watch out for each other,'" McKinley said. "Fundamentally, we need to change our roadway design and the generations-old assumption that the car is the default or best way to get around. If safety is truly a top priority for decision-makers, we should demand greater investments in historically underinvested communities where a disproportionate number of pedestrians are hit and killed."

To enhance pedestrian safety and reduce fatalities, AAA suggests several key steps: 

• Follow the Data: Let the data be the guide. Invest in the areas and solutions that will make the biggest impact. That means targeting unsafe locations outside downtown areas, often in socially and economically disadvantaged neighborhoods.
  
   
• Coordinate for Impact: State and local governments can work more closely to invest resources to save lives where needed most, regardless of who "owns" the roadway.
  
   
• Demand a Safer System: A Safe System approach anticipates human mistakes and reduces crash severity by addressing safety holistically, through safer roads, vehicles, speeds, and road users.

Drivers can do their part by: 

• Minimizing risky driving behaviors such as speeding, texting, driving while drowsy or distracted, or driving under the influence of cannabis or alcohol. Follow speed limits, keep your smartphone out of reach, and only drive when sober.
  
   
• Do not rely on pedestrian detection systems to prevent a crash. This technology can only serve as a backup, not as a replacement for an engaged driver.
  
   
• Drive with extra caution at night, as this is the riskiest time for pedestrians and when vehicle safety systems struggle the most.

FARGO, N.D. (Nov. 19, 2024) – 2024 has been the "year of travel" for North Dakotans, and Thanksgiving looks to keep it rolling: AAA projects 79.9 million travelers will head 50 miles or more from home over the Thanksgiving holiday travel period. That surpasses last year's record by 1.7 million people, or 2%, and marks a 2-million-person increase over 2019.

The storyline, here, is fundamentally economic: Robust wage growth has boosted personal income, while inflation - especially on common travel products - has stabilized and even declined. All told, consumer spending is up nearly 5% from this time last year - while North Dakota gas prices have fallen $0.30 over the same period.

"Gratitude has always been the watchword for Thanksgiving get-togethers, and Americans have apparently decided they've got a lot to be grateful for this year," said Skyler McKinley, regional director of public affairs for AAA. “Remember, travel is an economic choice. While post-pandemic pessimism about the economy lingers, it hasn't borne out in travel trendlines - which is good news for the American hospitality industry, even as travelers can expect choked-up roadways and long lines at airports.”

In effort to better capture the flow of holiday travelers, AAA expanded the number of days in the Thanksgiving holiday travel period. Instead of Wednesday-Sunday, this year’s Thanksgiving holiday travel period is seven days, stretching from Tuesday, Nov. 26 to Monday, Dec. 2. Additionally, we expanded our historical travel numbers to provide an apples-to-apples comparison.

Thanksgiving Travelers by Mode
 

Automobile travel will set new records nationwide - with 71.7 million people traveling by car over Thanksgiving, up 1.3 million drivers over last year. 

Gas prices are trending down compared to 2023. The national average last Thanksgiving Day was $3.26. Falling oil prices this autumn may help push the national average below $3 a gallon for the first time since 2021, and that could happen before drivers hit the road for Thanksgiving. 

In North Dakota, drivers are paying an average price of $2.93 - with prices at their highest in Bismarck ($3.04) and lowest in Grand Forks ($2.74).

AAA car rental partner Hertz says Atlanta, Las Vegas, Los Angeles, Miami, Oahu, Orlando, and Phoenix show the highest rental demand for the Thanksgiving holiday. The busiest car pick-up day is expected to be the Wednesday before Thanksgiving, and the busiest rental return days will be the Monday and Tuesday after the holiday.

Thanksgiving air travel is also expected to set a new record. Nationally, AAA projects 5.84 million people will fly domestically this holiday. That’s an increase of 2% compared to last year and a nearly 11% increase over 2019. 

Domestic airfares are up 3% this year, according to AAA booking data, while the number of bookings are similar to last year. International flight bookings are up 23% compared to last Thanksgiving, in part because the cost to fly internationally is down 5%.

Other modes of transportation increased 9% from last year. Nationally, nearly 2.3 million people are expected to travel by various transportation methods including buses, cruises, and trains. That represents an 18% jump over 2019, in large part due to the popularity of cruising. 

Best/Worst Times to Drive

According to INRIX, a provider of transportation data and insights:

• The worst times to travel by car over Thanksgiving are Tuesday and Wednesday afternoon.
• The best time to hit the road is Thanksgiving Day itself when interstates and highways are typically clear.
• Drivers returning home on Sunday should leave early in the morning, and those coming back on Monday should expect a mix of travelers and work commuters on the road.

"When you're stuck in traffic, remember you can't be mad at traffic: You are traffic," McKinley said. “Take a beat, take a deep breath, and take in the local color. You're going to get to where you need to be, though you should build in extra time if you have appointments to keep.”

AAA's Top Thanksgiving Destinations
 

Americans are flocking to warmer environs this Thanksgiving. Four Florida cities make the list by way of their beaches, theme parks, and cruise ports. Other top spots include New York, California, Hawaii, and Las Vegas. Internationally, Europe and the Caribbean dominate the list thanks to their beach resorts, tourist attractions, and river cruises.

AAA’s Road Trip Tips

• Get a full vehicle inspection before setting out on your trip. Find a mechanic you can trust at AAA.com/AutoRepair. 
• Leave early and allow extra time to get to your destination. Who wants to be in a rush?
• Identify alternate routes in case you encounter congestion or road closures.
• Avoid distractions while driving. Program your GPS before your drive.
• Ensure everyone in the vehicle wears their seatbelt.
• Never drive impaired.

AAA’s Air Travel Tips

• Check-in early online.
• Monitor your flight status using your air carrier’s mobile app.
• Arrive 2-3 hours before scheduled departure.
• Pack medications and an extra set of clothes in your carry-on bag, just in case your flight is delayed or cancelled. Avoid checking a bag altogether if you're worried about lost luggage headaches. 

Tips for Air Travelers who Have Not Booked their Flight Yet:

• Book a flight that leaves early in the day. Flights in the afternoon and evening are more susceptible to delays and cancellations.
• Book a direct flight. Otherwise, build in extra time between connections, in case your first flight is delayed.
• Consider traveling on Thanksgiving Day. This could offer the best combination of availability and price.

“It’s not too late to purchase travel insurance, especially if you've spent considerably on your vacation plans,” McKinley said. “There are policies that can provide compensation for flight delays for as little as three hours. And if a flight is cancelled, passengers can receive compensation for covered out-of-pocket expenses.”

AAA Reminds Drivers to ‘Move Over for Me’

With more people sharing the roads, the danger is multiplied for those on the roadside. AAA reminds motorists to slow down and move over for first responders, tow trucks, and any motorist with a disabled vehicle on the side of the road.

“We want to make sure all holiday travelers, tow truck drivers and first responders make it home safely this Thanksgiving,” McKinley said. “Do the right thing: Move over for any flashing lights you see at the roadside, from tow trucks to law enforcement to North Dakotans in need. That small gesture could save a life, and it's North Dakota law, to boot."

Holiday Forecast Methodology

Travel Forecast 

In cooperation with AAA, S&P Global Market Intelligence (SPGMI) developed a unique methodology to forecast actual domestic travel volumes. The economic variables used to forecast travel for the current holiday are leveraged from SPGMI’s proprietary databases. These data include macroeconomic drivers such as employment, output, household net worth, asset prices, including stock indices, interest rates, housing market indicators, and variables related to travel and tourism, including gasoline prices, airline travel, and hotel stays. AAA and SPGMI have quantified holiday travel volumes going back to 2000. 

Historical travel volume estimates come from DK SHIFFLET’s TRAVEL PERFORMANCE/Monitor^SM. The PERFORMANCE/Monitor^SM is a comprehensive study measuring the travel behavior of U.S. residents. DK SHIFFLET contacts over 50,000 U.S. households each month to obtain detailed travel data, resulting in the unique ability to estimate visitor volume and spending, identify trends, and forecast U.S. travel behavior, all after the trips have been taken.

The travel forecast is reported in person-trips. In particular, AAA and SPGMI forecast the total U.S. holiday travel volume and expected mode of transportation. The travel forecast presented in this report was prepared the week of October 7, 2024.

Because AAA forecasts focus on domestic leisure travel only, comparisons to TSA passenger screening numbers should not be made. TSA data includes all passengers traveling on both domestic and international routes. Additionally, TSA screens passengers each time they enter secured areas of the airport, therefore each one-way trip is counted as a passenger tally. AAA focuses on person-trips, which include the full round-trip travel itinerary. As a result, direct comparisons of AAA forecast volumes and daily TSA screenings represent different factors.

If you’re single and you don’t have dependents, you might think you don’t need coverage. Here’s the problem: If you pass away unexpectedly when you’re young, you may leave behind a lot of unpaid expenses for your family or executor to deal with. Life insurance guarantees those expenses can get paid so that your family will never need to worry about them.

Do you need insurance if you’re nearing retirement?

What’s the difference between term and permanent life insurance?

Having a positive discussion about life insurance means understanding its types.

Term life insurance is for a fixed period, such as 10 or 20 years. If you die during the specified period, your beneficiary will be paid a death benefit - or the face value of the policy.

Permanent life insurance is designed to remain in place for your entire life, for which your beneficiary receives the death benefit. In addition, you may be able to borrow from the cash value or surrender the value when canceling the policy.

What if I have a pre-existing condition?

Though it could be an obstacle, having a pre-existing condition doesn’t automatically mean you won’t be able to buy life insurance. Homeowners and renters insurance tips for students:

• If you live in a dorm, most personal possessions will be covered under your parents’ homeowners or renters insurance policies. Still, expensive items such as computers and other electronics might be subject to coverage limits under a standard homeowners policy. If the limits are too low, parents might want to consider purchasing a special personal property endorsement.
   
• If you live off-campus, purchase renters insurance. Renters insurance is necessary to protect you and your belongings, and can protect you from liability in the event that someone accidentally gets injured on your property. It's highly affordable, to boot. 
   
• Leave valuables at home. While some valuable items, such as laptops, may be needed on campus, items such as expensive jewelry might be best left at home. 
   
• Create a “dorm inventory.” Create a detailed inventory of all items you’ll be taking with you, including photos and receipts. In the event that you need to file a claim, an up-to-date inventory will help make the process easier. 
   
• Safeguard your items from theft. Always lock your dorm room door and never leave belongings unattended on campus. According to the Insurance Information Institute, burglaries make up about 50 percent of all on-campus crimes, and they occur primarily at the library, dining hall, and other public places. 

Car Coverage at College

• Coverage may depend on whether you leave home or stay in the area. If you bring a car to campus and remain on your parents’ policy, coverage likely still applies. If you attend an out-of-state school, make sure your insurance coverage follows you. If a student isn't taking a car to college, parents can save by taking them off their policies until they're driving again. 
   
• Check state minimum liability requirements. If you're headed out of state with the car, check with your insurance provider to ensure minimum requirements are met. Insurance providers know the requirements of each state they're licensed to do business.
   
• Check with your insurance agent. To see what discounts you may qualify for and to ensure you have adequate coverage while away at school, get in touch with your insurance agent. 

Whether you choose to get around by two wheels or four, now’s a great time to brush up on motorcycle safety, since we all have the same right to our roadways.

For Motorists
Fundamentally, cars are more dangerous to motorcycles than motorcycles are to cars. That’s why motorists have a special responsibility to take some simple precautions:

• Be extra vigilant on weekends, when more motorcyclists take to the road – and during the 10-day run of the Sturgis Motorcycle Rally. Motorcycles can be difficult to see, so keep a constant eye on the traffic around you, double- and triple-check your blind spots before merging or changing lanes and watch traffic at intersections before turning or pulling out.
   
• Provide motorcyclists adequate room to maneuver. Follow at least three to four seconds behind them. In bad weather, at night, and at highway speeds, give the motorcyclist four to five seconds of following distance.
   
• Allow extra maneuvering room in areas with potholes, pavement transitions, and railroad crossings. Motorcyclists may need to slow down, stop, or adjust their lane position.
   
• Never try to share a lane with a motorcycle. Motorcycles have the same right to lanes as any other vehicle.
   
• Always use your turn signals, so motorcyclists can plan their own maneuvers and protect themselves.  
   
• Be extra careful when turning left at intersections, since motorcycles are more difficult to see as you cross into their lane

For Motorcyclists
One of the most common reasons drivers give for cutting off or pulling out in front of a motorcycle is that they "didn't see it." Bikers can increase their visibility by:

• Keeping headlights, marker and taillights on at dusk and in dark or rainy weather.
   
• Staying three to four seconds behind a vehicle they intend to pass, checking oncoming traffic from the left side of the lane, signaling the intention to turn, and then checking for oncoming traffic before passing.
   
• Remembering ATGATT – “All the gear, all the time.” Wear proper clothing, eyewear, and sturdy, closed-toe footwear. Brightly colored gear will significantly increase visibility. 

Bikers can prevent crashes and injuries by:

• Wearing a helmet. Cars are equipped with multiple safety features designed to protect passengers in the event of a crash. Motorcycles aren’t. Riders without a helmet are 40 percent more likely to suffer a fatal head injury in a crash, and are three times more likely to suffer traumatic brain injuries. 
   
• Slowing down. More than 35 percent of motorcyclists involved in fatal crashes were speeding. 
   
• Riding sober. In 2021 motorcycle riders involved in fatal crashes had higher percentages of alcohol impairment than drivers of any other motor vehicle type (28% for motorcycles, 24% for passenger cars, 20% for light trucks, and 3% for large trucks). 43% of motorcycle riders who died in single-vehicle crashes were alcohol-impaired.
   
• Identifying oncoming hazards. Uneven road surfaces, debris and slick roads could cause you to lose control of your motorcycle. When riding, be alert. If you come across any of these hazards, ride through at a steady speed. Sudden acceleration, deceleration, or leans could cause the bike to slide out from under you and should be avoided.
   
• Approaching intersections with caution. Intersections are more than just traffic convergence points. They are chaotic, with multiple threats to motorcyclists. Cars could pull out in front of you while you are crossing uneven terrain. Debris could be scattered across the road making it difficult to stop quickly when the vehicle in front of you slams on its brakes. The key is having a plan for the “what if’s” so that you are prepared to make a split-second decision when the need arises.
   
• Taking care of preventative maintenance. Before a ride, it's important to inspect your vehicle. Check the brake lights, fuel level, chain (if applicable), tire pressure, engine oil, horn and clutch. Beyond this, regular service and maintenance are crucial to avoid equipment failure while riding. Your motorcycle is your only protection, so ensure it's well maintained to prevent crashes.

"As someone who was struck by a car while out on my motorcycle, I know one thing for certain: My helmet helped save my life," said Skyler McKinley, regional director of public affairs for AAA. "Still, I would've preferred that the crash never happened at all. Motorists have a responsibility to watch for motorcycles and give them space to maneuver, and bikers should slow down and take every measure to increase their visibility. And nobody should ever ride or drive distracted or impaired."

Insurance Tips for Motorcyclists

• Motorcycles aren’t generally covered under standard auto or homeowners policies. You’ll need specialty coverage specific to your bike.
   
• With it, you’ll get broader coverage and options, specialized claims handling, and dedicated customer service. You can also score additional discounts if you’re an experienced rider, if you complete training courses, or if you have a membership in a rider association.
   
• Policy costs depend on various factors: age, motorcycle type, driving history, and location, all of which can impact costs. Shop around for quotes to get the best price and coverage. Bundle with your auto, home, or renters policies to maximize savings.

Auto Travel & North Dakota Gas Prices
AAA projects a record 60.6 million people will travel by car over Independence Day week – that’s an additional 2.8 million travelers compared to last year. This year’s number also surpasses 2019, when 55.3 million people traveled by car for July 4.

Per AAA rental car partner Hertz, Dallas, Denver, Salt Lake City, Los Angeles, and San Francisco are the cities with the highest rental demand during the holiday week. The busiest pick-up days are projected to be Friday, June 28, Saturday, June 29, and Wednesday, July 3.

During last year's holiday weekend, North Dakota gas prices averaged $3.48 per gallon. Today, the state average is $3.30, roughly 20 cents below the national average. Pump prices in North Dakota have been marked by stability, gaining three cents on the week ahead of the holiday and sitting two cents lower than this time last month. 

Still, relative stasis in the oil markets is easily threatened by geopolitical tensions or hurricanes that threaten oil rigs and refineries along the Gulf of Mexico, sending prices upward.

Air Travel
The number of domestic air travelers is also expected to set a record. Nationally, AAA projects 5.74 million people will fly to their July 4th destinations. That’s an increase of nearly 7% compared to last year and a 12% increase over 2019.

AAA booking data show domestic airfare is 2% cheaper this Independence Day week compared to last year, and the average price for a domestic roundtrip ticket is $800. Airports will be packed throughout the week. AAA recommends arriving 2 hours early, reserving parking ahead of time, and traveling with carry-on luggage versus checked bags to save time and money.

Other Modes of Transportation
More than 4.6 million people are expected to travel by other modes of transportation, including buses, cruises, and trains. That represents an increase of 9% compared to last year, but shy of 2019’s figure of 4.79 million.

Cruising continues its remarkable post-pandemic comeback. This time of year, Alaska cruises are in high demand, making Seattle and Anchorage top domestic destinations. Cruise travelers are also finding deals this summer. With new ships coming onto the market – and going for a premium – some cruise lines have been offering targeted discounts to fill older inventory for remaining cabins. To save money, AAA recommends working with a trusted travel adviser - who has access to hidden deals that never make it online. 

Top Destinations

This July 4th week, travelers are cooling off in the Pacific Northwest and Alaska – and by the ocean! Seattle, Vancouver, and Anchorage are top destinations because of the popularity of Alaska cruises this time of year. Beaches in South Florida, Honolulu, Punta Cana, and Barcelona are in high demand. Historical sites in European cities like London, Rome, Dublin, Paris, and Athens are also popular. 

Congestion
INRIX, a provider of transportation data and insights, says the worst times to travel by car before and on July 4 are between 2pm and 7pm. Drivers should hit the road in the morning, and travelers returning on Monday, July 8 should avoid rush hour traffic in the morning and afternoon.

“Drivers in large metro areas can expect the worst traffic delays on Wednesday, July 3rd, as they leave town, and Sunday, July 7th, as they return,” said Bob Pishue, transportation analyst at INRIX. “Road trips over the holiday week could take up to 67% longer than normal. Travelers should monitor 511 services, local news stations, and traffic apps for up-to-the-minute road conditions.”

Holiday Forecast Methodology
In cooperation with AAA, S&P Global Market Intelligence (SPGMI) developed a unique methodology to forecast actual domestic travel volumes. The economic variables used to forecast travel for the current holiday are leveraged from SPGMI’s proprietary databases. These data include macroeconomic drivers such as employment, output, household net worth, asset prices, including stock indices, interest rates, housing market indicators, and variables related to travel and tourism, including gasoline prices, airline travel, and hotel stays. AAA and SPGMI have quantified holiday travel volumes going back to 2000.

Historical travel volume estimates come from DK SHIFFLET’s TRAVEL PERFORMANCE/MonitorSM. The PERFORMANCE/MonitorSM is a comprehensive study measuring the travel behavior of U.S. residents. DK SHIFFLET contacts over 50,000 U.S. households each month to obtain detailed travel data, resulting in the unique ability to estimate visitor volume and spending, identify trends, and forecast U.S. travel behavior, all after the trips have been taken.

The travel forecast is reported in person-trips. In particular, AAA and SPGMI forecast the total U.S. holiday travel volume and expected mode of transportation. The travel forecast presented in this report was prepared the week of May 27, 2024.

Because AAA forecasts focus on domestic leisure travel only, comparisons to TSA passenger screening numbers should not be made. TSA data includes all passengers traveling on both domestic and international routes. Additionally, TSA screens passengers each time they enter secured areas of the airport, therefore each one-way trip is counted as a passenger tally. AAA focuses on person-trips, which include the full round-trip travel itinerary. As a result, direct comparisons of AAA forecast volumes and daily TSA screenings represent different factors. 

For this forecast, the Independence Day holiday travel period is defined as the nine-day period from Saturday, June 29 to Sunday, July 7. Historically, the Independence Day holiday period included only one weekend. This is the first year the Independence Day holiday travel period is a longer timeframe with two weekends included. 

"It's no question to anybody who's ever worked with him that Gene LaDoucer is irreplaceable," McKinley said. According to a new AAA survey, 66 percent of drivers expressed fear about fully self-driving vehicles, while 25 percent were uncertain. This sentiment has not decreased since spiking last year.

"People’s fears are mostly driven by well-publicized incidents where drivers lost their lives in car crashes because they believed their vehicle could drive itself,” said Gene LaDoucer, regional director of public affairs, AAA – The Auto Club Group. “While there’s no vehicle on the road today that can safely drive itself, there are vehicle technologies that can improve safety, as long as the driver remains fully engaged while behind the wheel.”

Despite people’s fears of self-driving cars, interest in advanced driver assistance systems remains high. AAA's survey found that almost two-thirds of U.S. drivers would want Reverse Automatic Emergency Braking (65%), Automatic Emergency Braking (63%), or Lane Keeping Assistance (62%) on their next vehicle.

While these safety technologies have proven effective, they are not fool proof. Interestingly, most U.S. drivers also believe Automatic Emergency Braking (AEB) will stop the vehicle when another car, children, adult pedestrians, or bicyclists are in front of or behind the vehicle. However, recent AAA research found that Reverse AEB systems prevented a collision in only 1 of 40 test runs in scenarios involving a subject vehicle crossing behind the test vehicle and only 10 out of 20 test runs with a stationary child target behind the test vehicle.

AAA believes that to alleviate consumer concerns, ADAS performance should reflect reasonable and safe scenarios with a clear understanding of the limitations. Advanced vehicle safety technology should enhance driver awareness rather than give the impression of replacing a vigilant driver. When asked if there are cars available that drive themselves while you sleep - fully self-driving vehicles are not yet available for purchase by consumers - four in ten drivers are unsure or think they can buy a car that drives itself while they sleep, a significant safety concern of these technologies.

Methodology

The survey was conducted January 11-16, 2024, using a probability-based panel designed to be representative of the U.S. household population overall. The panel provides sample coverage of approximately 97% of the U.S. household population. Most surveys were completed online; consumers without Internet access were surveyed over the phone.

A total of 1,220 interviews were completed among U.S. adults, 18 years of age or older, of which 1,010 qualified for the study. The margin of error for the study overall is 4.1% at the 95% confidence level. Smaller subgroups have larger error margins.

Sobering Statistics: According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), St. Patrick’s Day is one of the deadliest holidays on U.S. roadways. With Daylight Saving Time approaching (Sunday, March 10 at 2 AM), the darker mornings and lost hour of sleep will lead to more drowsy drivers. Soon-to-be-published research from the AAA Foundation for Traffic Safety reveals the shocking lethality of drowsy driving. The study, based on in-depth crash investigations and national fatal crash data, estimates that drowsy driving is a factor in roughly ten times as many traffic fatalities as traditional crash data indicates.

“This study should be a wakeup call for drivers to not underestimate the dangers of drowsy driving,” said Gene LaDoucer, regional director of public affairs, AAA – The Auto Club Group. “Whether you’re driving to work or taking the family on a road trip, if you're unable to stay alert, get off the road.”

According to the new Foundation study, drowsy drivers were involved in:

• 18% of all traffic fatalities between 2017 and 2021, accounting for nearly 30,000 deaths.
• 6,725 estimated deaths in 2021 alone.

These figures are far higher than official government statistics, highlighting the underreported nature of drowsy driving crashes. According to NHTSA, there is agreement across the traffic safety, sleep science, and public health communities that the impact of drowsy driving is underestimated.

Drowsiness impairs drivers in different ways:

• Reduced alertness: Makes it harder to react quickly to hazards. Just one hour less than the expert-recommended minimum of 7 hours of sleep increases a driver’s risk of crashing.
• Impaired judgment: Increases the risk of making poor decisions on the road. Sleep deprivation increases a driver’s risk of making many ordinary mistakes, leading to crashes. Those deprived of sleep by 4+ hours have an impairment similar to those over the legal BAC limit.
• Hazardous Microsleeps: Can cause momentary lapses in consciousness, leading to loss of control of the vehicle and failure to respond to dangers on the road.
• Self-Perception of Drowsiness: Previous Foundation research found that drivers often underestimate their drowsiness, putting themselves and others at risk.

Warning Signs of Drowsy Driving

Who’s at greater risk of drowsy driving and related crashes and deaths?

• Drivers on the road between midnight and 6 a.m. or in the later afternoon.
• Drivers who don’t get enough sleep.
• Commercial truck drivers.
• Drivers who work the night shift or long shifts.
• Drivers with untreated sleep disorders – like sleep apnea, where breathing repeatedly stops and starts.
• Drivers who use medicines that make them drowsy.

What can drivers do to avoid drowsy driving?

• Get enough sleep before driving. Aim for at least seven hours of sleep per night.
• Don't underestimate the power of a quick nap. A 20- to 30-minute nap can significantly improve your alertness.
• Travel at times of the day when you are normally awake. Avoid driving when you are tired or sleepy.
• Listen to your body. If you start to feel tired, pull over and take a break. Don't try to push through it.
• Take breaks every two hours or 100 miles. Get out of the car, stretch your legs, and get fresh air. Plan and identify safe, comfortable places to take breaks. Don’t wait until you’re already feeling drowsy.
• Travel with an alert passenger and take turns driving. Sharing the driving can help you stay awake and alert.
• Avoid heavy meals before driving. Eating a large meal can make you feel tired and sluggish.
• Avoid alcohol and drugs. Both can impair your driving ability. Besides harming driving directly, they can also amplify drowsiness.

AAA supports the development of vehicle technology that can detect drowsiness and prevent drivers from operating a vehicle when impaired. This technology could help to save lives by preventing drowsy driving crashes.

According to the survey, the most popular times to travel are from March through August. For many travelers, their first vacation of the year will be during spring break. According to the survey, nearly a quarter (22%) of North Dakotans will take a Spring Break vacation. Some of the most popular trips include beach destinations (29%), major cities (18%), national or state parks (15%) and theme parks (12%). Many (17%) are undecided on their destination.

“This time of year, many travelers are looking for warm weather, pools, beaches, and outdoor adventures,” Haas said.

If there’s one place that defines Spring Break, it’s Florida. AAA Travel booking data shows the Sunshine State tops the list of Spring Break destinations. Florida’s beaches, family-friendly attractions, and cruise ports make Florida a logical choice for in-state and out-of-state travelers seeking some fun in the sun. While Orlando is the top choice for Spring Break travelers, Fort Lauderdale and Miami are the two most popular domestic cruise ports.

Cruising is off to a splashy start in 2024 with sold-out ships and inaugural sailings, and that strong demand is evident in Spring Break bookings. AAA Travel data shows a 28% increase in cruise bookings for March and April compared to last year, and a 60% percent increase for cruises departing from South Florida.

Good to Know: More travelers are booking cruises farther in advance, which is one of AAA Travel’s cruising trends this year. Many Spring Break cruises have been sold-out for months. Last-minute bookings are possible, but prices may be higher and cabin choices limited.

AAA Advice: If you miss the boat for Spring Break, AAA Travel suggests booking a summer cruise now before they sell out, especially if you’re eyeing popular destinations like Alaska.

International Spring Break trips are also on the rise compared to last year. AAA data for March and April shows international flight bookings are up 20% and hotel bookings are up 37%. European cities top the list of most popular destinations: London, Paris, Rome, Dublin, and Amsterdam.

“More AAA members are also booking tours for their international Spring Break vacations,” Haas continued. They want the convenience, expertise, and peace of mind that guided travel brings.”

AAA Advice: Planning ahead is critical, especially when traveling internationally. AAA recommends travel insurance which provides coverage for accidents, illness, medical emergencies, delayed or canceled flights, lost luggage and more.

 AAA Advice: If you plan to drive at your destination, don’t forget to obtain an International Driving Permit (IDP) before your trip. An IDP is a document that translates a valid U.S. driver’s license into several different languages. Most countries highly recommend an IDP and several countries require it. AAA is the only entity in the U.S. authorized by the State Department to issue an IDP.

New AAA research reminds drivers to not put too much trust in their vehicle technology, especially when driving in reverse. AAA studied the effectiveness of technology designed to prevent drivers from backing into a pedestrian or approaching vehicle.

“Although this technology has proven to significantly reduce rear-end collisions, they are not foolproof,” said Gene LaDoucer, regional director of public affairs, AAA – The Auto Club Group. “Drivers are urged to remain alert and not become overly reliant on the technology.”

AAA studied four vehicles that combine Reverse Automatic Emergency Braking (Reverse AEB) and rear cross traffic mitigation. These systems are designed to detect rear cross-traffic and automatically apply brakes to avoid colliding with other cars, pedestrians, cyclists or stationary objects.

Research Overview

AAA conducted primary research in a closed-course environment to understand the performance of reverse AEB systems with rear cross traffic mitigation in challenging scenarios. Read the full report.

AAA Engineers wanted to answer two questions:

1. How do evaluated reverse AEB systems with rear cross traffic mitigation perform when backing out of a parking space into path of oncoming vehicle with an adjacent parked vehicle obstructing view?
2. How do evaluated reverse AEB systems perform when encountering a static simulated child pedestrian behind the vehicle?

Four popular 2023 model year vehicles equipped with reverse AEB with rear cross traffic mitigation were evaluated within this research. Only reverse AEB systems with the ability to detect and automatically brake for rear-cross traffic were eligible for testing.

Results

1. Reverse AEB systems automatically applied brakes in 65% of test runs and prevented a collision in 2.5% of test runs in the context of backing-up scenarios involving a subject vehicle crossing behind the test vehicle.
2.  With the stationary child target behind the test vehicle, reverse (AEB) automatically applied brakes in 75% of test runs and prevented a collision in 50% of test runs.

Analyzing Reverse Collisions and the Heightened Risk for Child Pedestrians

Reverse AEB is reported to be the most effective ADAS in terms of property damage liability claim reductions, while injury and fatality reductions were less pronounced than that of front AEB. Backing collisions usually happen between vehicles at a significantly lower speed resulting in a lower injury and fatality rate relative to collisions that may be mitigated by front AEB. However, children are particularly susceptible to back-over incidents in driveways and parking lots. 

NHTSA estimates that every year, there are approximately 210 fatalities and 15,000 injuries caused by back-over collisions. Of those fatalities, approximately 31 percent are children under five years old. In addition to vehicle-to-vehicle collisions, it is important to evaluate the effectiveness of these systems in preventing or mitigating collisions with pedestrians, especially children.

AAA’s Advice for Drivers

1. Always back up cautiously, especially when an object obstructs your view. Pause once the rear of the vehicle has cleared the obstruction to give these sensors time to detect a potential collision and bring the vehicle to a stop.
2. Drivers should not rely on reverse AEB systems to prevent collisions when backing up. Instead, consider the use of backup cameras and other sensors as a way to enhance your awareness.

Methodology

In partnership with the Automobile Club of Southern California’s Automotive Research Center, AAA selected four popular 2023 model year vehicles equipped with reverse AEB with rear cross traffic mitigation. Only reverse AEB systems with the ability to detect and automatically brake for rear cross traffic were eligible for testing. It was determined that all test vehicles would be small to medium SUVs due to the popularity of these categories. The “2023 Hyundai Tucson Hybrid”, The “Limited AWD 2023 Lexus RX 350 “Premium,” The “2023 Mazda CX-30 2.5 Turbo AWD “Premium Plus Package” and the “2023 Volkswagen Tiguan 2.0T “SEL R-Line."  Refer to the full report for methodology details, including specific testing equipment and test track characteristics.

“We’ve seen cruise ships already sell out of suites and cabins with balconies for various spring and summer itineraries,” said Debbie Haas, Vice President of Travel for AAA – The Auto Club Group. “Travel demand is off to a strong start, which means availability will continue to shrink in the next couple of months. So, if you want a specific itinerary, ship, or cabin type, act fast or you’ll have to start planning for next year instead.”

Best Time to Book

The first three months of the year are referred to as “wave season”. AAA says this is the best time to book a cruise, because cruise lines offer a wide range of discounts that can vary from 30-60% discounted pricing, cabin upgrades, BOGO offers, on-board credits, pre-paid gratuities, and drink packages.

Cruise Trends

The most sought-after dates for cruising are when students are out of school. That’s why spring break, summer, and the holidays tend to book the fastest. Those who are flexible on dates may find more availability and competitive pricing by sailing during the fall and the period between spring break and summer.

• The Caribbean is popular year-round, but spring and summer are the most popular sailing times.
• Alaska cruise season runs from May to September. Because this is an abbreviated period, there’s more competition for availability.

Struck and killed – nearly four times more than reported. It’s the chilling reality for roadside assistance providers (RAPs), including tow truck drivers, mobile mechanics, emergency roadside technicians, and safety service patrols who put themselves at risk every day to help others.  A new study from the AAA Foundation for Traffic Safety examined the conditions of crashes in which RAPs were struck and killed by vehicles, and why the problem is even bigger than previously believed.

“This new research reveals that vehicle collisions with roadside workers are not always the result of poor visibility,” said Gene LaDoucer, regional director of public affairs, AAA-The Auto Club Group. “More often than not, speed, driver distractions, or impairment are a factor.”

AAA Foundation researchers combed through diverse information sources and determined that 123 roadside assistance providers were killed by passing vehicles between 2015 and 2021. This grim figure dwarfs the approximately 34 noted in national crash data. AAA says the discrepancy is because state police crash reports incorrectly cited the crash victims as “pedestrians” instead of roadside assistance providers. While yearly total traffic fatalities increased significantly over the study period, the data suggest that roadside assistance provider fatalities increased even more.

Key Findings

• Speed Limits – 89% of the crashes occurred at locations with 55 mph or higher speed limits, almost all on interstates or other limited-access highways.
• Weather Conditions – 84% of crashes occurred in good weather without precipitation/slippery road conditions.
• Time of Day – 63% occurred during darkness, of which nearly two-thirds were at locations without street lighting. But 34% of the crashes were in daylight.

Driver Distraction/Impairment/Fatigue – 63% occurred in crashes in which the striking vehicle had already left the road and was traveling on the shoulder or beyond before impact. This suggests the involvement of factors such as impairment, fatigue, or distraction. More than one-third of striking drivers who were tested for alcohol were alcohol-positive. But nearly half were not tested.

“Interstates are particularly hazardous, as more than half of roadside provider deaths occurred there,” LaDoucer said. “The study attributes that to drivers traveling at high speeds, while not expecting to encounter pedestrians on freeways. This reinforces the importance that drivers stay focused on the task of driving and be prepared to slow down and move over when approaching workers on the roadside.”

Next Steps

AAA urges action on several fronts:

•  Slow down, Move Over: Reinforce these life-saving laws, reminding drivers to give space to ANYONE (including but not limited to roadside assistance, police, fire, EMS) working on the side of the road. Every ounce of awareness could be the difference between life and death.
•  Shield the Vulnerable: Utilize countermeasures to prevent vehicles from striking workers. The Foundation previously examined vehicle-mounted electronic variable message signs and found them effective at alerting drivers to slow down and move over.
•  Train for survival: Teach roadside workers to prioritize work away from traffic and equip them with strategies to avoid harm's way. Training for roadside assistance providers should emphasize the importance of not working or standing on the traffic-facing side of the incident whenever possible and minimize time spent on the traffic-facing side of the scene.

“Let’s remember this study is about real people, not statistics,” said Jake Nelson, AAA’s traffic safety and advocacy director.  “It’s a shared responsibility to solve this safety challenge.  Roadside workers and all of us who drive by them have to take action to move towards zero traffic deaths.”

North Dakota is among the states that strengthened the Move Over law, requiring drivers to move over for any vehicle on the roadside, displaying its hazard lights. The AAA Foundation study results suggest that full compliance with Move Over laws isn’t enough.  States also must address factors like speed, impaired driving, and distraction that lead to road departure crashes.  The AAA Foundation’s research reinforces the importance of the Safe System Approach (SSA) to transportation planning. How to Spot Ice Dams

• You have icicles that form along the edge of your roof and/or gutters.
• Ice has developed along the overhangs of your roof, or your gutters are filled with ice.

How Ice Dams Form

1.  Ice dams form when heat inside the house enters the attic and melts snow on the roof.
2.  The melted snow drips down your roof and re-freezes when it reaches the colder eaves (the part of the roof that overhangs the wall). This ice accumulation is called an ice dam.
3. As more melted snow travels down the roof, it begins to re-freeze sooner, pushing its way under the shingles.
4. The water then finds holes in the roof decking—between sheets of plywood or around nails—and begins to drip into your attic.

“Once the water is inside your house, it can cause paint to peel, floors to warp, and soggy insulation. If that water is left unattended, it could lead to mold and mildew,” LaDoucer continues. “Additionally, ice dams may cause some damage to the roof by loosening shingles, rotting the wood or tearing off gutters.”

What to do if you have Ice Dams?

First, don’t panic. Second, call a professional. While breaking off ice can seem like a simple task, if the ice is not removed properly, you risk causing more damage to your home or even injuring yourself in the process. Hire a licensed contractor with experience in ice dams to remove it properly and assess if you have any damage to your home.

“If you notice water damage or leaks coming into your home, contact your insurance provider immediately to review your plan’s coverage and file a claim,” says LaDoucer. “Many policies have ice dam coverage, but exclusions could apply.”

“Even if you don’t have damage, it’s a good idea to contact your insurance agent to make sure you fully understand your coverage options,” LaDoucer continued. “This will provide the comfort in knowing you’re prepared for anything Mother Nature throws at you.”

How to Prevent Ice Dams from Forming

The key to ice dam prevention is to keep your roof the same temperature as your eaves. There are several ways to accomplish this before snow begins accumulating:

• Increase attic ventilation through the use of soffit, gable and ridge vents to help circulate air through the attic, ensuring a consistent temperature.
• Examine your insulation to make sure it’s not blocking the vents and check its depth.
• Prevent heat from escaping into your attic by ensuring all attic ducts are sealed and properly insulated and any exhaust fans lead outdoors, not to the attic.
• Consult a professional if your attic is a living space, you need vents installed or insulation added.

While keeping the bottom couple of feet of the roof and gutters clear of snow can help minimize ice dams, the safer, more effective, and longer lasting solution is to fix the insulation inside the attic. Never get up on your roof to shovel the snow off or try to remove ice dams yourself. If you have major ice dams that have formed, you can call for a professional to come remove them. When choosing which company to hire for the removal, be sure to ask about their methods as chipping or sawing away at the ice can cause damage to the shingles.

With the season’s most frigid temperatures on the way, AAA reminds homeowners and renters that preparing for inclement weather is essential to avoiding wintertime repairs. Prolonged periods of below freezing temperatures can wreak havoc on a home’s heating system, plumbing, and exterior features.

“Maintaining your property is essential to reducing your risk of winter damage,” said Gene LaDoucer, regional director of public affairs, AAA-The Auto Club Group. “Taking small steps now can help you avoid high repair costs and headaches down the road.”

AAA Insurance reports the average regional frozen pipe claim costs more than $11,000, though the amount can be much higher depending on damage to personal property.

What You Can Do to Protect Your Home

• Remove hoses from exterior faucets.
• Repair or replace weather stripping around windows and doors, vents and fans, plumbing, air conditioners and electrical and gas lines.
• Use caulk or insulation to seal all cracks, holes and other openings on exterior walls.
• Let faucets drip a little bit to prevent freezing pipes.
• Well-insulated basements and crawl spaces will help protect pipes. Close foundation vents and windows to basements. Wrap vulnerable pipes with pipe insulation.
• Know where your water shutoff valve is so that you can turn off the water in case of an emergency.
• Air inside the walls, where pipes are, can be much colder than air in the room, so set the thermostat at a reasonable temperature, even if you will be away from home.
• Keep bathroom and kitchen cabinet doors open to let warm air circulate around the pipes.
• Close your wood burning fireplace flue damper when you’re not using it. Follow all manufacturer instructions for gas fireplaces including those with pilot lights, which may require the flue to be partially open at all times.

What to do if you Experience Winter Damage

Once conditions are safe to do so, document the damage by taking photos and video. Employ any safe measures to prevent the damage from spreading. Then contact your insurance provider immediately to file a claim. The sooner you start the process, the faster you can repair the damages.

Winter Damages Covered by Homeowners Insurance

Winter comes with snow, and sometimes lots of it. If your roof collapses or is damaged due to the weight of snow or ice from a storm, a standard home insurance policy may cover the damage.

Another threat to your home in the winter season are cold snaps. Water left standing in pipes when the temperature drops may expand with enough force to cause it to burst, leading to serious water damage if the issue isn’t immediately identified. Damage caused from burst pipes as well as the repair costs are covered by most standard home insurance policies, as long as regular maintenance is performed, and owners maintain heat in the building.

What’s Not Covered by Homeowners Insurance

Most storm damage is covered under Home Insurance, however there are exclusions that could apply.  

Flash floods caused by a sudden rise in temperature during the winter months can cause significant damage to your home that will not be covered by your standard home insurance policy, but flood insurance can be purchased separately.

Most damages not covered by insurance are due to homeowner neglect or lack of maintenance. These may include damages resulting from extreme cold due to failure to maintain heat in your house.

More Winter Liabilities

In addition to the above risks, slips and falls on your property are always possible in the winter. Such incidents are likely covered by the liability coverage that comes with your home insurance policy, but it’s a good idea to double check with your insurance agent. If you do experience an incident like this, help with potential legal aspects may also be included in your policy.

This year’s total number of travelers is a 2.2% increase over last year and the second highest year-end travel forecast since 2000 when AAA began tracking holiday travel. 2019 remains the busiest Christmas and New Year’s travel period on record, with 119 million travelers.

In the West North Central region, which includes Minnesota, North Dakota, Iowa, South Dakota and three other states, the increase in travelers is expected to be 1.3 percent. The largest increase in travelers from the region will be in other modes of transportation, such as train, bus or cruise ship. Air travel is expected to increase by 6.1 percent while auto travel is expected to increase less than 1 percent.

For the purposes of this forecast, the year-end holiday travel period is defined as Saturday, December 23, 2023, to Monday, January 1, 2024.

“AAA has seen steady year-over-year growth in travel demand, culminating with what is expected to be the busiest year-end holiday travel season on record in Florida, and the second-busiest nationwide,” said Debbie Haas, Vice President of Travel for AAA – The Auto Club Group. “Despite various inflationary pressures, Americans are still willing to budget for travel. With a record number of travelers, the roads, airports and cruise lines will be more crowded than normal. So finalize your travel plans now, anticipate longer lines, and give yourself extra time to get to your destination.”

AAA expects nearly 104 million people will drive to their holiday destinations, an increase of 1.8% compared to 2022. This year’s projected number of drivers is the second highest on record after 2019, when 108 million drivers hit the road for the holidays.

As 2023 comes to a close, drivers can expect to pay about the same or less for a gallon of gas than they did last holiday season, when the national average on Christmas Day was $3.10, while state averages in Minnesota, North Dakota, Iowa and South Dakota were $2.95, $2.99, $2.86 and $3.05, respectively.

Airports are expected to be the busiest they’ve ever been over the Christmas and New Year’s travel period. AAA projects 7.5 million air travelers this holiday season, surpassing 2019’s record of 7.3 million passengers. Average ticket prices are slightly lower than last year.

“AAA recommends booking flights as early as possible to ensure the best combination of price and availability,” Haas said. “Those waiting until the last minute could catch a discount but may have fewer options in terms of non-stop flights and seat availability. Whenever you book, it’s important to consider travel insurance.”

“Seemingly every year around this time we hear about winter weather that causes widespread cancellations or delays,” Haas continued. “That’s another reason why we encourage travelers to get travel insurance, which offers protection for covered expenses associated with flight cancellations, lost luggage, and on flights with delays of as little as three hours.”

The number of people traveling by other modes, like bus, train, and cruise, is projected to surpass 2019. AAA expects more than 4 million Americans will take alternative transportation over Christmas and New Year’s compared to 3.66 million in 2022 and 3.89 million in 2019. Demand for cruises has skyrocketed post-pandemic, and the industry is now preparing for the wave of bookings that traditionally happens at the start of the new year.

“Savvy travelers know that right after the holidays is the best time to book a cruise,” Haas said. “That’s when cruise lines offer some of the best deals, and AAA members get exclusive benefits in addition to those discounts.”

DRIVE TIMES

INRIX, a provider of transportation data and insights, says there will be several days of potentially bad traffic during the 10-day holiday period. Saturday, December 23, and Thursday, December 28, will be the most congested days on the road. INRIX also says Saturday, December 30, when many people will be heading back home from their holiday destinations or traveling for New Year’s Eve, will see an increase in traffic compared to a normal Saturday. The best times to hit the road are before lunchtime or after 7p.m.

“Nationwide, drivers could see travel times up to 20% longer this holiday season. In major metros, especially in Denver, Minneapolis, and Washington, DC, drivers could experience nearly double the typical delays,” said Bob Pishue, transportation analyst at INRIX. “Avoid peak commuting hours and use traffic apps, local DOT notifications, and 511 services to minimize holiday travel traffic frustrations.”

The economic variables used to forecast travel for the current holiday are leveraged from S&P Global Market Intelligence’s proprietary databases. These data include macroeconomic drivers such as employment, output, household net worth, asset prices, including stock indices, interest rates, housing market indicators, and variables related to travel and tourism, including gasoline prices, airline travel, and hotel stays. AAA and S&P Global Market Intelligence have quantified holiday travel volumes going back to 2000. 

Historical travel volume estimates come from DK SHIFFLET’s TRAVEL PERFORMANCE/Monitor^SM. The PERFORMANCE/Monitor^SM is a comprehensive study measuring the travel behavior of U.S. residents. DK SHIFFLET contacts over 50,000 U.S. households each month to obtain detailed travel data, resulting in the unique ability to estimate visitor volume and spending, identify trends, and forecast U.S. travel behavior, all after the trips have been taken.

While today’s statewide average stands at $3.02, three in four stations across North Dakota have posted prices below $3. The lowest prices are under $2.80, according to AAA data.

The main reason is a weaker market for oil, which has slipped below $70 per barrel. The falling price comes just a week after OPEC+ announced voluntary production cuts of about 2 million barrels daily. But instead of viewing it as coal in the stocking, the oil market response has thus far been a resounding “meh”, according to AAA.

“Gas prices tend to follow a seasonal trend lower during the winter months,” said Gene LaDoucer, regional director of public affairs for AAA-The Auto Club Group. “Less travel and winter fuel blends allow for cheaper prices at the pump.”

Low gas demand, combined with supply growth has helped push pump prices lower. If oil prices remain low, drivers can expect pump prices to do the same through the winter months, according to LaDoucer.

Today's national average of $3.20 is 20 cents less than a month ago and 15 cents less than a year ago.  The North Dakota average is 39 cents less than a month ago and 14 less than this time last year.

"Despite acknowledging the dangers, some drivers continue to engage in potentially deadly behaviors, particularly speeding," said Dr. David Yang, AAA Foundation for Traffic Safety President and Executive Director. "Understanding the different types of risky driving behaviors and the characteristics of drivers who engage in them is crucial for developing targeted interventions to achieve safe mobility."

As daily driving patterns and traffic volumes rebound from pandemic lows, traffic fatalities remain alarmingly high.  Evidence points to fewer traffic stops, while fatal crashes involving risky behaviors like impaired driving and speeding remain an epidemic on our roadways.

"This study highlights a near-term and important opportunity to concentrate on enforcement that makes an immediate safety impact,” said Jake Nelson, AAA’s director of traffic safety advocacy. “Many risky drivers in this study were classified into profiles that involved speeding behavior. Focusing on speeding drivers will deter other risky driving behaviors like impaired driving and red-light running. This traffic safety measure will have the greatest impact on safety.”

According to the new  Traffic Safety Culture Index (TSCI) report, fewer drivers perceive speeding as dangerous, and speeding behaviors have the lowest perceived social disapproval of all the examined unsafe driving behaviors. It is worth noting, however, that a motorist’s need for speed consistently fails to deliver shorter travel times. It would take driving 100 miles at 80 mph instead of 75 mph to shave just 5 minutes off a trip.

The six driver profiles identified by the latest Traffic Safety Culture Index (TSCI) are:

Safe Drivers (41.2%) - Few in this group reported engaging in any risky driving-related behaviors, and more women (57%) composed the Safe Drivers group.

Speeding Drivers (22.7%) - These drivers reported driving 15mph over the speed limit on freeways and/or 10mph over on residential streets but did not engage in most other dangerous behaviors.

Distracted and Aggressive Drivers (17.3%) – Reported distracted driving behaviors (texting while driving), speeding, and aggressive behaviors, such as red-light running and switching lanes quickly.

Distracted Drivers (15.0%) – These drivers reported distracted driving behaviors such as reading text messages and texting while driving.

Most Dangerous Drivers (2.4%) - While these drivers consisted of only a small percentage of the drivers, they pose a serious risk to themselves and other road users as they reported engaging in all risky driving-related behaviors.

Impaired Drivers (1.3%) - Most live in non-metropolitan areas. Interestingly, drivers with a 4-year college degree were far less likely to report driving while impaired. At the same time, the most “over-represented” group consisted of those with some college or an associate degree.

The survey asked drivers about their perceived level of danger for various driving behaviors. The majority of drivers perceived unsafe driving behaviors as very or extremely dangerous, and yet, as in past years, many admitted to doing these behaviors at least once in the previous 30 days.

Thanksgiving Travel

More than half of North Dakota travelers (56%) are planning a trip with at least one overnight stay for Thanksgiving. According to the survey, the largest share of travelers (46%) will lock in their Thanksgiving travel plans during September. By the end of the month, 58% will have already booked their trip. Tips for booking flights during Thanksgiving week

The busiest travel days will be Tuesday, Wednesday and Sunday. Consider booking a flight Sunday or Monday before Thanksgiving and Saturday after the holiday. Airports should be less busy and flights should have more availability.

Christmas Travel

The timing is more spread out for Floridians who are planning a trip for Christmas. Only 6% have already finalized plans, as close to a quarter will wait until October (26%), and November (29%) to book.

Tips for booking flights for Christmas

Regardless of what date Christmas falls on, most travelers depart two to four days prior to the holiday. Since Christmas Day falls on a Monday this year, travelers should expect the busiest days at the airport to be Friday and Saturday, before the holiday.

AAA's Advice for Booking a Flight

• Book early for the best combination of availability and price. Most travelers want to skip layovers and get right to their destination. That means nonstop flights, especially those going cross-country and internationally, will fill up fast.

• Book a direct flight that leaves early in the morning. Afternoon and evening flights are more susceptible to delays/cancellations due to weather or other unforeseen circumstances. Connecting flights multiply the risk of something going wrong.
• Consider traveling a day or two earlier than planned. Even if you face delays, you are still likely to arrive on time.
• If your flight has connections, build in a couple hours between flights. This way, if your first flight is delayed, you are less likely to miss your second one.

Flight Concerns

Nearly one-third of North Dakota holiday travelers (30%) say they are less likely to fly this year because they're concerned about flight delays and cancellations. AAA urges travelers to consider travel insurance, which provides financial compensation if your flight is affected by covered reasons like severe winter weather, which can ruin your plans.

"Given recent challenges with air travel, we are seeing more and more passengers opt for travel insurance," Haas said. "Travel Insurance is such a valuable resource for air travelers, because it provides financial benefits for lost or delayed luggage, flight cancellations, and flight delays of as little as three hours."

More People are Gifting Experiences Instead of Presents

AAA travel advisors say they're seeing more people gift travel experiences to loved ones instead of presents. That means those people are already thinking about the holidays. "I just booked travel for one family who's surprising their children on Christmas morning with a trip to Disney World, leaving later that same day! That family was sure to book early to get exactly what they wanted," said Cady DeBlois, a travel advisor for AAA.

YOLO (You Only Live Once) Replacing Bucket Lists

After three years of a pandemic, many travelers are tackling their bucket lists now. "I've had travelers tell me, I don't know what my health will be in 5 or 10 years, let's go abroad this year," said Jodi Abata, AAA travel advisor, who frequently books international trips for AAA members. "There seems to be a sense of adventure from more people now. They don't want to delay travel any longer."

Europe, Cruises, and Theme Parks Sell Out in Advance

European travel is booming this year, and the holidays will be no exception. AAA travel advisors say touring Christmas markets in Europe is extremely popular and itineraries sell out in advance. River cruises are also in high demand during the holidays, along with Caribbean cruises. Theme parks are a holiday favorite among families with kids when students are on winter break. DeBlois added, "I've already booked theme park vacations for Christmas 2024. That's how eager many families are to get their holiday plans on the books."

The AAA Consumer Pulse™ Survey was conducted online among residents living in North Dakota from August 1-7, 2023. A total of 200 residents completed the survey. Survey results asked of all respondents have a maximum margin of error of ± 6.9% points. Responses are weighted by age and gender to ensure reliable and accurate representation of the adult population (18+) in North Dakota.

"It's important for car buyers to clearly understand the costs associated with owning a new vehicle," said Greg Brannon, AAA's director of automotive research. "Due to global supply chain issues and constrained inventory of new vehicles, car prices rose dramatically in 2022. And while the situation continues to improve, the spillover effects are keeping prices high."

The overall average manufacturer's suggested retail price (MSRP) of the new vehicles in the 2023 YDC study is $34,876. This is $1,575 (4.7%) higher than last year.https://newsroom.aaa.com/2022/08/annual-cost-of-new-car-ownership-crosses-10k-mark/ It is important to note that MSRP does not always correspond to a consumer's actual purchase price and may vary depending on demand. Furthermore, a higher sticker price directly impacts finance costs, with this year's vehicles boasting an average annual finance charge of $1,253, a staggering 90% increase from the previous year.

The change in the annual cost of owning a new vehicle is also likely driven by:

• Depreciation, which is the difference between the car's value upon purchase and the value of the car when sold. According to this year's YDC projections, new vehicles are expected to depreciate by an average of $4,538 per year over five years of ownership, up 24% over 2022.
• The jump in new vehicle prices (up almost $1,600) compared to used vehicle values that have experienced a decline in the past year.
• Automakers across the board have focused on producing more oversized, luxurious, and expensive vehicles, loaded with extra features that bump up prices even more.

Compared to last year, one of the higher annual cost categories was fuel, but this year's average cost per mile has decreased by roughly 2 cents per mile. It's worth noting that the cost of charging EVs has actually increased, by almost 2 cents per kWh over last year, from 13.9 cents per kWh to 15.8 cents per kWh. The increase is likely accounted for by higher-than-expected inflation, according to the U.S. Energy Information Administration (EIA).

Given their size, fuel economy, and prices, it should come as no surprise that ½-ton pickups have the highest average driving cost among all vehicle categories covered in the YDC study. Interestingly, the pickup truck market has slowed over the last 12 months as gas prices trend high and financial costs climb. Pickup trucks excel at hauling and towing, although many buyers do not use them for these purposes. Potential buyers should remember that the unique capabilities of pickups come at a high cost of over $1 per mile.

"The once popular pickup truck is now seeing a slight decline in demand as these vehicles have become increasingly expensive, rivaling the price of many luxury cars," said Brannon. "As interest rates continue to climb, this adds a layer of expense per month that consumers should consider when shopping for their next vehicle."

AAA CAR BUYING ADVICE

With the purchase price being so high and impacting other cost categories, it's important to remember these car-buying tips:

• Know all the expenses associated with ownership to negotiate the best deal.
• Start early! Due to limited inventory, consumers may have fewer choices regarding a specific vehicle model. They may have to wait for delivery or even pre-order the vehicle of their choice.
• Before discussing finance rates with the car dealer, obtain pre-approval from their financial institution (e.g., Bank, Credit Union, AAA, etc.). By getting pre-approval, they will have a threshold of the best lending rate they'll pay. Buyers can use their pre-approval to negotiate if the dealer offers a higher rate.
• Create a budget and factor in the different elements of ownership before purchase – not just monthly payments. Other factors to consider when making the budget include insurance, gas, routine maintenance, etc.
• Typically, three negotiations occur when purchasing a vehicle – the cost of the car, the finance rate, and the trade-in value. Keep each transaction/negotiation separate from the other.
  • The Purchase Cost: Check multiple websites, including the manufacturer, to understand what the vehicle sells for in your area. You could save hundreds of dollars by driving outside of your immediate location and expanding your search area.
  • The Finance Rate: The biggest factor in obtaining a favorable interest rate is one's credit score. Higher credit scores will result in lower interest rates. Obtain pre-approval for an auto loan, determine the highest interest rate you might be charged, and then ask the dealer if they can offer a lower interest rate. If they can, you save money.
  • The Trade-In Value: While evaluating your trade-in, you must determine the vehicle's condition. Most used vehicles fall into the "good" or "fair" category, which is the most common. To determine the value, check various websites to learn the average trade-in value. *Remember, selling a vehicle independently on your own may increase the value amount you may receive for the vehicle. However, there are safety aspects to consider, proper paperwork, bill of sale, etc. Trading the vehicle can often be easier and hassle free.

The Your Driving Costs online calculator provides an interactive and personalized breakdown for car shoppers that uses the same methodology as AAA's annual analysis of new car ownership. Consumers can view comprehensive cost analyses of a specific vehicle by category to determine if ownership costs best align with their budget. Data is available for new and used vehicles (five model years back), and consumers may customize the results based on location and other personal driving tendencies.

METHODOLOGY
AAA uses a proprietary methodology to calculate the costs of owning and operating a new car in the United States. Data is gathered from various sources, including Vincentric LLC, and incorporates standardized criteria to estimate the costs of using a new vehicle for personal transportation over five years and 75,000 miles of ownership. The use of standardized criteria ensures that AAA estimates are consistent when comparing the driving costs of different vehicle types. Actual driving costs will vary based on driving habits, location, operating conditions and other factors.

AAA evaluated nine categories of vehicles – consisting of 45 models – to determine a new vehicle's average annual operating and ownership costs. AAA selects top-selling, mid-priced models and compares them across six categories: fuel, maintenance/repair/tire costs, insurance, license/registration/taxes, depreciation, and finance charges. The study assumes a five-year ownership period, with the vehicle being driven 15,000 miles/annually (or a total of 75,000 miles).

Popular Destinations

AAA booking data shows Vancouver, Rome, London, Dublin, and Paris are the Top 5 international destinations over Labor Day weekend. International hotel bookings for the holiday are up 82 percent compared to 2022 and international cruise bookings are up 44 percent over last year. Canada is popular this time of year because of its cooler temperatures and stunning scenery. Europe has seen a surge in travel all year, with more people eager to see the world again without restrictions.

The Top 5 domestic destinations are Seattle, Orlando, Anchorage, New York and Las Vegas. Seattle tourism has been boosted by the strong demand for Alaska cruises. Florida destinations are popular not only for their beaches and theme parks but also for their cruise ports in Central Florida, Fort Lauderdale, Tampa, and Miami. AAA data shows domestic cruise bookings over Labor Day weekend are up 19 percent compared to 2022.

Gas Prices

Drivers taking road trips this Labor Day weekend will likely see gas prices similar to last year. The national average for a gallon of regular was $3.78 on Labor Day 2022. This summer, gas prices spiked in July because of tight supply and the high cost of oil. The month of August has brought some relief and, barring a major storm in the Gulf of Mexico, prices should remain steady – or even go down – heading into Labor Day weekend.

Extended Vacations

A new survey of AAA travel advisors reveals topics and trends on the minds of travelers this summer:

• AAA travel advisors are seeing high interest among travelers for ocean and river cruises, plus all-inclusive and guided tour vacations.
• 64% of AAA travel advisors say travelers who booked extended vacations (at least 14 nights) said having more time to explore destinations was their main reason for taking an extended trip.
• 83% of AAA travel advisors say the most common concern from travelers over the last 60 days was getting stranded by a delayed or canceled flight.
• 59% of AAA travel advisors have seen more interest in travel insurance over the last 60 days.

Stranded Motorists

Nationwide, AAA expects to rescue more than 300,000 stranded motorists during the Labor Day holiday weekend. The three most common reasons are flat tires, dead batteries, and lockouts. These could be avoided by having your car inspected before leaving for your destination and bringing an extra set of keys.

AAA advisors say the best way to avoid spending your holiday on the roadside is by getting a full vehicle inspection before your trip.

In the event you do suffer car trouble, here are some important steps to take:

• Pull as far over on the shoulder as safely possible to create more distance between your vehicle and passing traffic.
• Turn your hazard lights on so other drivers are aware you are there.
• If you are able to safely make it to the next exit or stopping point, do so.
• Call for assistance via phone, website or the AAA Mobile app.
• Remain with your vehicle as long as it's safe to do so.
• If getting out of your vehicle, watch the oncoming traffic for a good time to exit, and remain alert and close to your vehicle. Avoid turning your back to traffic whenever possible.

Prevent Collisions

• Remain alert. Avoid distractions and focus on driving.
• Constantly scan the road ahead. This will help you identify and avoid potential hazards.
• Move over a lane when approaching a vehicle on the roadside. AAA reminds motorists that a new North Dakota law requires drivers to move over for disabled vehicles with their hazard lights on. If you can't move over, slow down to safely pass.
• Watch for people on the roadside. People may be in or near a disabled vehicle. Just because you don't immediately see them doesn't mean they aren't there.
• Be a good passenger. Help identify roadway issues and remind the driver to slow down and move over.

Survey Methodology

AAA sent surveys to a random sample of AAA travel advisors between July 12 and July 26, 2023. 165 AAA travel advisors responded.

This time of year is particularly dangerous due to the combination of young inexperienced drivers, pedestrians and bicyclists who will all share the road in the early morning and afternoon hours.

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, 64 percent of child pedestrians killed in traffic crashes in 2021 occurred between 6 a.m. and 6 p.m. Monday through Friday. (NHTSA Traffic Safety Facts).

"Drivers should have a heightened sense of awareness the moment they put the vehicle in gear," said Gene LaDoucer, regional director of public affairs, AAA – The Auto Club Group. "Excited children can move quickly and cross the road unexpectedly. You can reduce the chance of a terrible tragedy by staying focused, obeying the speed limit and being prepared to stop quickly," he added.

A new AAA survey reveals that many drivers admit to risky behaviors like speeding and using a handheld mobile phone while driving through a school zone. The survey found that 42% of North Dakota drivers admitted to speeding in an active school zone, and 30% admitted to using a hand-held cell phone while driving in an active school zone.

The AAA School's Open Drive Carefully awareness campaign was launched in 1946 in an effort to prevent school-related child pedestrian traffic crashes.

AAA offers tips to help keep kids safe this school year:

Slow down. Speed limits in school zones are reduced for a reason. A pedestrian struck by a vehicle traveling 25 mph is nearly two-thirds less likely to be killed compared to a pedestrian struck by a vehicle traveling just 10 mph faster. A difference between 25 mph and 35 mph can save a life.

Eliminate distractions. Children often cross the road unexpectedly and may emerge suddenly between two parked cars. Research shows that taking your eyes off the road for just two seconds doubles your chances of crashing.

Reverse responsibly. Every vehicle has blind spots. Check for children on the sidewalk, driveway and around your vehicle before slowly backing up. Teach your children to never play in, under or around vehicles—even those that are parked.

Talk to your teen. Car crashes are one of the leading causes of death for teens in the United States, and more than one-quarter of fatal crashes involving teen drivers occur during the after-school hours of 3 to 7 p.m.

Come to a complete stop. Research shows that more than one-third of drivers roll through stop signs in school zones or neighborhoods. Always come to a complete stop, checking carefully for children on sidewalks and in crosswalks before proceeding.

Watch for bicycles. Children on bicycles are often inexperienced, unsteady, and unpredictable. Slow down and allow at least three feet of passing distance between your vehicle and the bicycle.

Stop for school buses. Motorists are required to stop when approaching a school bus that is stopped with its red lights flashing and STOP arm extended. The only exception is upon a highway with separate roadways and the bus is on a different roadway. Thirteen percent of North Dakota drivers admit to having driven around a school bus while its red lights were flashing and its stop arms are extended.

Include safety in education. Advise your children to use sidewalk, cross at marked crosswalks and to avoid texting or wearing headphones so they can detect nearby traffic. While waiting for a school bus or to cross a street, they should stay at least five feet from the roadway and avoid horseplay. If riding a bike to school, a properly fitted helmet should be worn. The law expands on a current statute that requires motorists to move over a lane, or slow down to a safe speed if unable to move over, when passing an emergency or highway maintenance vehicle alongside a highway when emergency lights are activated. The law will now also include stranded motorists when a vehicle's emergency flashers are activated.

A 2022 AAA survey of North Dakota drivers found that while most drivers do move over a lane or slow down for disabled vehicles, not all do. About one in every 10 North Dakota drivers stated they "never", "rarely" or only "sometimes" do so.

AAA has long been an advocate for Move Over laws, requiring drivers to slow down and move over for emergency responders on the roadside, yet there continues to be an alarming number of fatalities. Nearly 350 people are struck and killed outside a disabled vehicle each year in the United States.

"For years, Slow Down, Move Over efforts have focused on emergency responders," said Gene LaDoucer, regional director of AAA-The Auto Club Group. "While it's critical we continue to protect those who come to the aid of motorists, it's also important to provide the same protection to motorists who get flat tires, break down, run out of gas, or otherwise find themselves in trouble at the roadside. It's simple, if you see flashing lights, move over a lane and proceed with caution."

To protect emergency responders, AAA and other traffic safety advocates have led the way in getting Move Over laws passed in all 50 states and the District of Columbia. This year, AAA led efforts to see the laws expanded to include stranded motorists in several states. Currently, a total of 19 states have laws, or have legislation pending, to protect to all motorists.

AAA hopes to increase awareness of Move Over laws with its "Move Over for Me" campaign. The Auto Club Group has created advocacy messages featuring familiar roadside scenarios like getting a flat tire, engine trouble, or running out of gas. This campaign will appear on social media, at community events, in The Auto Club Group's AAA Living magazine, on service vehicles and in AAA retail facilities. As one tow truck driver is killed every other week while working on the roadside, the campaign will also utilize AAA's familiar service providers.

AAA offers tips to protect roadside workers and stranded motorists:

For Drivers

• Remain alert. Avoid distractions and focus on driving.
• Maintain visibility on everything going on 20 to 30 seconds ahead of you. This gives you time to see problems ahead and change lanes and speed accordingly.
• Emergencies can occur anywhere on the road. When you see flashing lights, slow down and prepare well in advance to change lanes. Allow others to merge into your lane when necessary.
• Don't follow semi-trucks or other large vehicles too closely. If a truck moves into a left-hand lane, don't speed around the right side. They are changing lanes for a reason; be prepared to change lanes yourself.
• In slippery conditions don't make sudden lane changes, which can cause an uncontrollable skid. Change lanes early and move over gradually.
• Be a good passenger. Help identify roadway issues and remind the driver to slow down and move over.

For Stranded Motorists

The AAA Foundation's research results varied across all 12 roadway sites examined. All had new posted speed limits— six raised and six lowered— and included various road types. Click here to view the full report

Key Findings

• Raising posted speed limits was associated with increased crashes on two of three interstate highways.
• Lowering posted speed limits led to fewer crashes in many cases examined. But the likelihood of speed limit violations increased after lowering posted speed limits, suggesting the need for better public awareness education tied to these changes.
• Changes in travel times were small in response to both raised and lowered speed limits.

"Our study found no one-size-fits-all answer regarding the impact of changing speed limits," said Gene LaDoucer, regional director of public affairs, AAA – The Auto Club Group. "AAA urges transportation officials to apply a holistic approach when setting or changing posted speed limits and prioritize safety over speed and capacity."

Dangers of Speeding

Speeding is a critical factor in vehicle crashes across the nation. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), there were more than 42,000 traffic deaths in 2021 and again in 2022, the highest levels in 16 years. NHTSA reports that speeding was a factor in nearly 29% of the fatalities in 2021 and 27% in 2022.

AAA recommends that changes in posted speed limits should consider a range of factors, including but not limited to the type of road, surrounding land use, and historical crash data. AAA supports automated speed enforcement, but programs must be carefully implemented to maintain community support, prioritize equity and consistently drive improved safety.

"The movement in statehouses to raise speed limits is happening across the country in at least eight states this year," said Jennifer Ryan, director of state relations for AAA. "But the benefits are overrated, and the risks are understated. Increasing speed limits does not always yield the positive results envisioned by traffic planners."

This study is the third phase of the AAA Foundation research examining the effect of posted speed limit changes on safety. In the Foundation's first study, traffic engineers were asked how posted speed limits are set and what factors they consider in changing them. In the second phase, crash testing revealed that small speed increases have severe and potentially deadly effects on crash outcomes.

Domestic travel over the long weekend will increase by 2.1 million people compared to 2022. This year's projection surpasses the previous July 4th weekend record set in 2019 of 49 million travelers.

"Independence Day weekend appears to be the continuation of what has already been a very strong summer travel season," said Debbie Haas, Vice President of Travel for AAA – The Auto Club Group. "Although airfares and hotel rates are more expensive than last year, Americans are still eager to travel. So, expect to see congested roads, busy hotels, and long lines at airports and attractions."

Road Trips

Nearly 85% of all travelers will take a road trip. AAA predicts 43.2 million Americans will drive to their destinations. That's a little over 1 million more people on the road than last year. Friday, June 30 is expected to be the busiest day on the roads during the Independence Day holiday weekend, according to INRIX, a provider of transportation data and insights. The worst travel times vary by day, but are generally in the afternoon and early evening.

As lakes and parks are the region's most popular vacation destinations during the summer months, North Dakotans can expect to see higher traffic volumes in those areas over the holiday weekend, according to Gene LaDoucer, regional director of public affairs for AAA-The Auto Club Group.

Gas Prices

While it's still too early to know exactly what drivers will pay at the pump this Independence Day, it's on track to be about $1.20 below what drivers paid during last year's holiday period. The North Dakota average was $4.65 per gallon on July 4, 2022. So far this summer, gas prices have been relatively steady. Today's average is $3.46 per gallon.

Busy Airports

A record-setting 4.17 million Americans will fly to their destinations this Independence Day weekend. That surpasses the previous July 4 weekend air-travel record of 3.91 million travelers, which was set in 2019. The share of air travelers in the overall holiday forecast this year is an impressive 8.2% -- the highest percentage in nearly 20 years.

Other modes of transportation are also on the rise this year. AAA expects 3.36 million people will travel by bus, cruise, or train over the long weekend, an increase of 24% over last year. This national figure is not expected to surpass 2019 levels.

Trends and Tips

Travel demand has steadily increased since 2020, and this summer is poised to be one for the record books. Here are some trends and tips from AAA Travel.

• Air travel is seeing the biggest spike in demand despite higher ticket prices. Passengers are paying 40- 50 percent more for flights compared to last year, yet AAA data shows bookings remain strong. Many airlines are responding to surging demand by hiring more staff and taking smaller regional planes out of service and replacing them with larger ones to increase capacity. However, there are still challenges, including a shortage of air traffic controllers that has led to reduced service in and out of New York City area airports.
  • AAA Travel Tip: Apply for TSA Precheck to avoid long security lines at packed airports
• Hotel prices are up just slightly over 2022. While the number of domestic hotel bookings is about the same as last year, AAA data shows international hotel bookings are up 80% compared to 2022. International travel demand is booming and so are passport applications. The U.S. State Department says it's processing half a million applications a week. Routine service is averaging 10-13 weeks.
  • AAA Travel Tip: Need a passport fast? RushMyPassport provides expedited services and discounts for AAA members. This past May, they handled more than 1,100 applications from AAA members, compared to just 73 applications in May of last year.
• Car rental shortages seen during the pandemic have improved. Inventory has steadily increased since last year, with newer models and electric vehicles added to fleets. AAA data shows rental prices are down slightly from last year. Demand for international rental cars is up more than 80% compared to 2022.
  • AAA Travel Tip: Prepay for your rental car to be eligible for added savings and the confidence that the car of your choice will be waiting for you as planned. If you're planning to drive abroad, keep in mind some countries require International Driving Permits. AAA is one of only two private entities in the U.S. authorized by the State Department to issue IDPs. This year, AAA reports demand for IDPs is double what it was in 2022.
• Cruising is back to pre-pandemic numbers, with sold-out ships and advance bookings. Prices are about the same as 2022, with certain cruises a bit higher this year due to demand. Alaska cruises are particularly popular this time of year. AAA booking data also shows Caribbean cruises and European river cruises are top vacations in 2023.
  • AAA Travel Tip: Protect your investment with travel insurance. AAA data shows demand for travel insurance is up more than 100% over last year, as more travelers now see the need to prepare for the unexpected.

Holiday Forecast Methodology

In cooperation with AAA, S&P Global Market Intelligence developed a unique methodology to forecast actual domestic travel volumes. The economic variables used to forecast travel for the current holiday are leveraged from S&P Global Market Intelligence's proprietary databases. These data include macroeconomic drivers such as employment, output, household net worth, asset prices including stock indices, interest rates, housing market indicators, and variables related to travel and tourism including gasoline prices, airline travel, and hotel stays. AAA and S&P Global Market Intelligence have quantified holiday travel volumes going back to 2000.

Historical travel volume estimates come from DK SHIFFLET's TRAVEL PERFORMANCE/Monitor^SM. The PERFORMANCE/Monitor^SM is a comprehensive study measuring the travel behavior of U.S. residents. DK SHIFFLET contacts over 50,000 U.S. households each month to obtain detailed travel data, resulting in the unique ability to estimate visitor volume and spending, identify trends, forecast U.S. travel behavior and position brands—all after the trips have been taken.

The travel forecast is reported in person-trips. In particular, AAA and SPGMI forecast the total U.S. holiday travel volume and expected mode of transportation. The travel forecast presented in this report was prepared the week of May 15, 2023.

As part of AAA's "I Got Caught" campaign, as many as 14,000 North Dakota youth will be written a 'citation' for a free small DQ® cone for wearing a helmet while biking, skateboarding or in-line skating.

"We want to encourage youth to wear a helmet in hopes they develop a lifelong appreciation for safety," said Gene LaDoucer, regional director of public affairs for AAA-The Auto Club Group. "Program sponsors enjoy providing positive reinforcement to youth and hope parents will take the next step in modeling the desired habit of wearing helmets themselves."

According to Safe Kids Worldwide, properly-fitted helmets can reduce the risk of head injuries by at least 45 percent – yet less than half of children 14 and under usually wear a bike helmet. A Centers for Disease Control and Prevention study found that law enforcement and other safety officials can reinforce the need to wear a helmet through positive interactions such as free or discounted helmet distribution programs and incentives for helmet use.

The study tested the Ford F-150 Lightning, a popular electric pickup truck, and found that its range dropped by 24.5% (from 278 miles to 210) when loaded with 1,400 pounds of sandbags -- 110 pounds shy of its maximum capacity. For context, 1,400 pounds is the same as hauling around 70 bags of mulch or 20 bags of concrete mix.

"Our testing revealed a significant range reduction, but it's important to note that the Lightning was loaded to near its maximum capacity," said Greg Brannon, director of AAA Automotive Engineering. "Most buyers will likely use their Lightning with a lighter load, resulting in a much smaller range reduction."

"This study is important for broadening our understanding of the limitations of electric vehicles," said Gene LaDoucer, regional director of public affairs for AAA – The Auto Club Group. "Range anxiety remains a top reason consumers are hesitant to switch from gasoline-powered vehicles to EVs. While this study may heighten concerns, it's worth remembering that excess weight reduces fuel economy in gas-powered vehicles too."

Physics, Driving Behavior Play a Role

Extra weight requires more energy to move. The type of driving also plays a role. Highway driving, which typically involves higher speeds and less regenerative braking, will further reduce range. Unlike gas-powered vehicles, which perform more efficiently at highway speeds, EVs thrive in urban driving conditions due to regenerative braking from more frequent stops. Regenerative brakes capture the energy from braking and convert it into the electrical power that charges the vehicle's high-voltage battery. This electricity can then be stored in the car's battery or power other electrical components.

In the case of battery electric pickups used as work vehicles, permanent loads (such as equipment racks, toolboxes, and equipment trays built into the vehicle) will reduce the range at all times, even without additional cargo.

"Summer is historically a dangerous time for teen drivers," said Gene LaDoucer, regional director of public affairs for AAA-The Auto Club Group. "Now that school is out, teens will spend more time on the road, often driving with friends at different times of day and night. Because of their inexperience, teens are more susceptible to dangerous driving behaviors – like speeding, driving distracted, and not wearing a seat belt. AAA urges parents to model safe driving behavior and reinforce safe driving habits with their teen drivers to help keep them safe this summer."

Traffic crashes are the leading cause of death for teens ages 16-19. For every mile driven, recently licensed teen are three times more likely to be involved in a deadly crash compared to adults.

National Teen Driver Statistics:

• An average of 2,108 teens are involved in deadly crashes, every year.
  • 660 (31%) of those occur during the 100 Deadliest Days.
• These crashes result in an average of 2,341 deaths per year.
  • 732 (31%) of those fatalities occur during the 100 Deadliest Days.

In North Dakota:

• On average, 9 teen drivers age 15-18 are involved in fatal crashes, each year.
  • 3 (33%) of those occur during the 100 Deadliest Days.
• These crashes result in an average of 11 deaths per year.
  • 4 (36%) of those fatalities occur during the 100 Deadliest Days.

Common Risk Factors

Understanding the risks and knowing the facts will prepare both you and your teen for the road ahead:

• Distracted driving. Distraction plays a role in nearly six out of ten teen crashes. Electronics like cell phones and in-vehicle infotainment systems are considered the second-biggest distraction to teen drivers. The biggest distractions are teen passengers.
• Driving with teen passengers. Research shows that the risk of a fatal crash increases in direct relation to the number of teenagers in a car (NHTSA). Having other passengers in the car can contribute to peer pressure and the impulse to engage in dangerous habits like speeding and aggressive driving.
• Speeding. Speeding is a factor in nearly 30 percent of fatal crashes involving teen drivers.
• Not wearing a safety belt. Teens who buckle up significantly reduce their risk of dying or being seriously injured in a crash.

AAA's Advice

"The single most important thing parents can do to help their teens become safe drivers is to be involved in their 'learning to drive' process," said Rachel Wilson, Director of Driver Education Programs, AAA – The Auto Club Group. "Spend time coaching your teen while they're behind the wheel and have a serious discussion about safety. While parents can be a great teacher, it also helps to seek out professional training courses, like those provided by AAA."

• Lead by example. Minimize risky behavior when you drive. Don't drive aggressively, avoid distractions, and always wear your seatbelt. Your driving skills and judgement behind the wheel shape your child's view of safe driving habits, even before they're old enough to drive. Make safe driving a priority in your own life.
• Conduct at least 50 hours of supervised practice driving. Let your teen drive in a variety of conditions including inclement weather, busy interstates, and at night. This will help them become a more confident driver in imperfect situations.
• Teach defensive driving skills. Help your teen anticipate potential risks by constantly scanning the road for hazards. Then share advice for how to safely avoid them.
• Establish a parent-teen driving agreement which sets family rules like when the teen can drive, where they can go and with who. Then clearly outline the consequences for breaking the rules and rewards for driving safe.

The AAA School Safety Patroller of the Year Award recognizes the patroller who best exemplifies the leadership qualities, good citizenship, school involvement, and application of safety skills vital to effectively and responsibly wear the AAA School Safety Patrol badge. During the nomination process, students were carefully picked by their teacher, principal, or supervisor and then judged based on their performance with leadership qualities, safety skills, school involvement, and citizenship. The final stage of judging includes review of an essay that described, "How participating in the AAA School Safety Patrol™ program helped me become a better leader."

Gene LaDoucer, regional director of public affairs for AAA-The Auto Club Group presented Nolan with a plaque and $200 gift card during an assembly at the school this morning, May 31.

"Nolan was nominated by his advisor for unwavering dedication, leadership and communications skills, all of which are critical when dealing with student safety," said LaDoucer.

In his essay, Nolan stated he looked up to other patrollers in the school since he was in kindergarten and that "Whenever, wherever, however, I would do Safety Patrol - that is how much I love Safety Patrol.

"Being a member of the AAA Safety Patrol has helped me to learn more about my passions. It has helped me build relationships and friendships. It has helped me become a better leader in my school and community," wrote Nolan.

For more than 100 years, AAA clubs have proudly sponsored, promoted and aided AAA School Safety Patrol programs as a community service in the interest of safety for all schoolchildren. Each year, the program includes more than 679,000 children participating at 35,000 schools across the country.

This is the 25^th year The Auto Club Group has provided the Tow to Go program. When called upon, The Auto Club Group dispatches a tow truck to transport the driver and vehicle to a safe location within a 10-mile radius for free. Since its inception, Tow to Go has removed more than 25,000 impaired drivers from the road.

Nationwide, AAA expects to rescue more than 483,000 stranded motorists during the holiday weekend. The three most common reasons are flat tires, dead batteries, and lockouts.

A recent AAA survey found that 26% of North Dakotans plan to get a professional vehicle inspection before their summer road trips. Another 37% of drivers will conduct their own inspection. However, more than a quarter (28%) of North Dakotans say they have no plans to get a vehicle inspection before hitting the road this summer.

"A properly maintained vehicle is critical for a successful and safe road trip," said Gene LaDoucer, regional director of public affairs for AAA-The Auto Club Group. "We encourage all drivers to get a pre-trip inspection of their tires, battery, breaks, fluids, and other basics. This could help prevent a breakdown before it happens."

AAA Tips for Drivers with Car Trouble

• Pull as far over on the shoulder as safely possible to create more distance between your vehicle and passing traffic.
• Turn your hazard lights on so other drivers are aware you are there.
• If you are able to safely make it to the next exit or stopping point, do so.
• Call for assistance via phone, website or the AAA Mobile app.
• Remain with your vehicle as long as it's safe to do so.
• If getting out of your vehicle, watch the oncoming traffic for a good time to exit, and remain alert and close to your vehicle. Avoid turning your back to traffic whenever possible.

AAA Tips to Prevent Car Problems

• Check your tires – At minimum, AAA recommends checking your tires once a month and before taking a long trip. Pay special attention to both tire inflation pressure and tread depth. Be sure to inspect all four tires and the spare tire if your vehicle has one.
• Check your battery – The average car battery life is typically 3-5 years. If your engine is slow to start and/or your lights are dim, your battery may be nearing the end of its life. Visual signs of damage or corrosion are other indicators of deterioration. Drivers can ask for a battery check at a AAA Car Care Center or Approved Auto Repair Facility. AAA can also come to a member's location to test and, if needed, replace the battery on site.
• Listen to and feel the brakes – If you hear a grinding sound or feel a vibration when applying the brakes, take your vehicle to an auto repair shop for a brake inspection.
• Replace wiper blades and replenish windshield cleaner – Rubber wiper blades naturally deteriorate over time. Most manufacturers recommend replacing them every 6-12 months. If wipers streak or fail to clear the windshield thoroughly, replace the blades.
• Top off engine oil and other fluids – Check that engine oil, coolant and brake, transmission and power steering fluids are at the correct levels for safe vehicle operation. When adding fluids, use products that meet the specifications listed in the owner's manual.
• Replenish emergency kit supplies – AAA recommends keeping a well-stocked emergency kit in your vehicle. Include a flashlight and extra fresh batteries, first-aid supplies, drinking water, non-perishable snacks for people and pets, car battery booster cables, emergency flares or reflectors, a rain poncho, a basic tool kit, duct tape, gloves and shop rags or paper towels.

Safe Driving Tips

Preparing your vehicle is one thing. It's also important that drivers are personally ready to focus on the road. AAA provides the following safe driving habits, as a reminder for drivers:

• Watch your speed – For more than two decades, speeding has been involved in approximately one-third of all motor vehicle fatalities. Be sure to drive the speed limit and lower your speed if conditions warrant.
• Watch the road – Distracted drivers kill thousands of people every year. Taking eyes off the road for more than two seconds doubles the risk of a crash. Potential distractions include cell phone use, eating, drinking, or interacting with other passengers. Focusing on the road enables drivers to spot and avoid potential hazards that could otherwise lead to a crash.
• Rest up – Drowsy driving is as dangerous as drunk driving. AAA recommends drivers get plenty of rest before a big road trip. During a drive, take breaks every 100 miles or two hours. Motorists should pull over if they find themselves getting tired.
• Drive Sober – Drugs and alcohol negatively impact the important brain functions needed for driving safely: judgement, motor skills, memory, and reaction time. AAA urges everyone to avoid driving after ingesting any substance that could impair their ability to drive.

Move Over for Roadside Workers and Stranded Motorists:

"AAA's roadside technicians will put their lives on the line to rescue the hundreds of thousands of drivers on the roadside with car trouble," continued LaDoucer. "We urge drivers to stay focused on the road and its shoulders. Whether it's a first responder, tow truck or disabled vehicle, if you see flashing lights, move over so everyone can make it home safely."

Advice for Drivers:

• Remain alert - Avoid distractions and focus on driving.
• Keep an eye out for emergency vehicles – including tow trucks – that have their lights on as well as cars that have their flashers on. Move over one lane when you see them, and if you can't move over, slow down to safely pass them.
• Be a good passenger - Help identify roadway issues and remind the driver to slow down and move over.
• Watch for people on the roadside - People may be in or near a disabled vehicle. Just because you don't immediately see them doesn't mean they aren't there.

"Memorial Day weekend is the kickoff to what promises to be a very busy summer travel season," said Debbie Haas, Vice President of Travel for AAA – The Auto Club Group. "Despite various inflationary pressures, consumer spending is strong, and Americans still want to travel. Because of that, we've seen demand come roaring back, just shy of pre-pandemic level."

Total Travelers – AAA projects 42.3 million Americans will travel 50 miles or more from home this Memorial Day weekend. That's 2.7 million (+7%) more travelers than last year, but fewer people than what was reported in 2019 (42.8 million) and 2005 (44 million).

Air Travel – Despite higher ticket prices, demand for flights is soaring. AAA predicts the strongest air travel numbers since 2005. Nearly 3.4 million travelers are expected to fly for the holiday weekend. That's 33,700 (11%) more passengers than last year, and 170,000 (5.4%) more than in 2019.

Airfares – Travelers are paying more for Memorial Day trips this year, in large part due to the rising cost of airline tickets. AAA booking data shows a 40% increase in airfares to this year's Top Destinations.

Auto Travel – Memorial Day road trips are up 6% from last year. An estimated 37.1 million Americans will drive to their destinations. That's 2 million more than last year, but 500,000 fewer than 2019 numbers. Driving remains the preferred mode of transportation for 88% of holiday travelers.

Gas Prices – Gas prices have moved lower in recent weeks, yet it's too early to know if that downward trend will continue in the lead-up to the summer kick-off. However, it's unlikely that prices will come anywhere near the statewide average that North Dakota holiday travelers paid last year of $4.26 per gallon. The average currently stands at $3.37.

Memorial Day Holiday Travel Period

For purposes of this forecast, the Memorial Day holiday travel period is defined as the five-day period from Thursday, May 25 to Monday, May 29. The five-day holiday length is consistent with previous holiday periods.

Top Destinations

AAA is seeing increased demand for iconic cities, international vacation packages, and cruises with included amenities that provide added value for the price.

• Tourist hotspots like Orlando, New York City, and Las Vegas are top domestic destinations, according to AAA booking data for the Memorial Day weekend.
• Other popular U.S. cities this Memorial Day include Denver, Boston, Anaheim, and Canton, Ohio – home of the Pro Football Hall of Fame.

International travel is surging with bookings 250% higher this holiday weekend compared to 2022. European cities are the most popular, including Rome, Paris, Dublin, London, Barcelona, and Athens. International car rentals are up more than 80% over 2022. AAA reports strong sales for International Driving Permits this year, almost double what they were last year.

According to a new AAA travel survey, 82% of North Dakotans will travel this year. More than half (59%) of them will take a summer vacation. However, only one in five (20%) of summer travelers have finalized their plans.

The AAA Consumer Pulse™ Survey was conducted online among residents living in North Dakota from April 20 – 27, 2023. A total of 200 residents completed the survey. Survey results asked of all respondents have a maximum margin of error of ± 6.9% points. Responses are weighted by age and gender to ensure reliable and accurate representation of the adult population (18+) in North Dakota.

2022 was notable for soaring gas prices, with the national average for a gallon of gas hitting a record $5.01 in June. In North Dakota, the state average reached a new record high of $4.79. Consumers responded by purchasing more than 760,000 EVs, a 65% increase from 2021. Of the 71 vehicles reviewed for the 2023 AAA Car Guide, 19 are pure electric.

AAA Releases its 2023 Car Guide

The AAA Car Guide is an easy-to-understand resources that takes some of the stress and guesswork out of car shopping by providing the vital information consumers need to make the right choice.

The 2023 AAA Car Guide includes comprehensive reviews of each vehicle based on 13 criteria, including:

The 2022 BMW iX xDrive50 earned the overall top score for the 2023 edition of the AAA Car Guide. 1. Prioritize Your Passport

You can't travel internationally without a passport. If you don't have one, apply ASAP! The U.S. Department of State issues passports, and routine service normally takes 8 to 11 weeks. But pandemic-related application backlogs coupled with a surge in travel demand are leading to longer wait times, anywhere from 10 to 13 weeks. Even some expedited services are seeing delays of about 7 to 9 weeks. If you already have a passport, check the expiration date. Some countries require passports be valid for six months beyond your departure date from the United States. Your destination might also require a travel visa. 5. Unpack Once, See the World

Travelers wanting to experience multiple destinations without staying at multiple hotels are booking cruises. This year, cruising is in high demand. AAA booking data shows cruises departing from international destinations are up 30% compared to 2022. Cruises sailing in Nothern Europe, the Caribbean, and the Mediterranean are among the most popular. European river cruises and ships sailing in the Persian Gulf and Southeast Asia are also high on the list.

6. Renting a Car? You'll Need This

Many countries require an International Driving Permit (IDP) to drive legally. An IDP is a valid form of identification that includes your name, photo, and driver information. Even if a country doesn't require an IDP, your rental car company might. An IDP must be issued in the same country as the driver's license of the traveler and may not be issued more than six months before the desired effective date. AAA is one of only two private entities in the U.S. authorized by the U.S. Department of State to issue an IDP.

7. Protect Your Investment

Travel insurance is always a good idea but even more so if you're traveling internationally. Protecting your trip is highly recommended in case of trip delay, expenses incurred from missed flights, lost luggage, or medical expenses due to illness or injury. 10. Take it from the Pros

AAA Diamonds Inspectors know a thing or two about travel. They log thousands of miles every year, inspecting hotels and restaurants, verifying the 4Cs of AAA Diamonds: Cleanliness, Comfort, Cuisine, and Consistency. Here are some pro tips from AAA Inspectors on international travel.

• "Notify your credit card company of your trip and check foreign transaction fees. Use ATMs instead of exchange houses and always choose local currency if given the choice with credit card transactions."
• "Take a photo or make a copy of your passport and keep that with you. Secure your physical passport in the hotel safe while you're sightseeing."
• "If traveling with a significant other or close friend, split your clothes into two bags, so if one suitcase is delayed or lost, you both have clothing. If traveling alone, put a few clothing items in your carry-on."
• "Put a large paper with your name, address, and contact information inside the front pocket of your checked suitcase in case your luggage tag is removed or falls off. This will give you a better chance of having your bag returned to you."
• If you're checking a suitcase and carrying on a roller bag, put the heaviest items in your carry-on. That way, you avoid paying an overweight fee on your suitcase, and if the airline forces you to check your carry-on anyway because there's no overhead bin space, you won't have to pay a checked bag fee either."

A new survey from AAA found that the number of drivers who sustained vehicle damage from a pothole requiring a repair soared 57% from the previous year. In 2022, an estimated 44 million U.S. drivers were hit with pothole repair bills - up from 28 million in 2021. The average price tag was $406 per repair. And if being victimized by a pothole once isn't enough, drivers often end up with an average of two pothole-related repairs per year.

Cracked and crumbling pavement is the perfect environment for potholes to form. Moisture collects in these crevices and, as temperatures fluctuate, it expands and contracts due to freezing and thawing. This breaks up the pavement and, combined with the weight of passing cars, eventually results in a pothole. These concrete craters can wreak havoc on a vehicle's tires, alignment, suspension and shocks.

"Snow and cold are hard to ignore in North Dakota and so are potholes," said Gene LaDoucer, regional director of public affairs for AAA-The Auto Club Group. "Not being prepared for those craters in the road can result in pricey damage to your vehicle."

In the winter and spring of 2022, AAA responded to 1.9 million tire-related roadside assistance calls across the United States. While AAA does not identify if a roadside assistance request stems from pothole damage, this number represented 12 percent of the total calls received in the winter and spring last year.

Avoiding Damage

While potholes are a reality for many drivers, sustaining vehicle damage does not have to be. AAA recommends the following:

• Check Your Tires, which includes tread depth, tire pressure, suspension and alignment
  • Tread depth—insert a quarter into the tread groove with Washington's head upside down. If you can see the top of Washington's head, start shopping for new tires.
  • Tire pressure—check this at least once a month using a quality gauge. Do so before driving when tires have been at rest and are not hot. Follow the vehicle manufacturer's recommended inflation pressure found on a sticker inside the driver's side door.
  • Suspension and Alignment—look for changes in vehicle handling, excessive vibration or uneven wearing of tires, all indications of a problem with the suspension like alignment or shocks. If your vehicle pulls to the left or right, have the wheel alignment checked by a trusted mechanic.
• Keep Your Eyes on the Road, an alert and cautious driver is less likely to hit a pothole
  • Scan the road ahead for potholes and if it's safe to do so, drive around any in your path.
  • Increase your following distance so you can see potholes as they appear from under vehicles ahead of you.
  • Standing water or puddles may disguise a deep pothole. Avoid driving through standing water when possible but if you can't, drive through slowly and treat them as though there may be potholes hiding beneath the water.
  • There may be times when you cannot avoid hitting a pothole. In that case, safely reduce your speed as much as possible and avoid braking abruptly, particularly as you go over the pothole as this compresses your suspension and adds extra force to the tire. Striking a pothole at higher speeds increases the chance of severe damage including knocking the wheels out of alignment, affecting the steering, and bending or even breaking suspension components.
  • If you hit a pothole, pay attention to any new or unusual noises or vibrations. If you detect something is off with your vehicle, take it to a trusted repair facility for a full vehicle inspection as soon as possible.

The survey reveals 68 percent of drivers are afraid of riding in a self-driving vehicle. That's up from 55 percent in 2022, and the largest annual increase since 2020.

"We did not expect such a dramatic shift in consumer concerns from previous years," said Gene LaDoucer, regional director of public affairs for AAA-The Auto Club Group. "Though it isn't entirely surprising, given the number of high-profile crashes that have recently occurred from over-reliance on current vehicle technologies."

Even with advancements made in recent years, these findings suggest the need to dispel confusion around automated vehicles. AAA's survey found that nearly one in ten drivers believe they can buy a vehicle that drives itself while they sleep. That is not true.

While this perception could stem from social media videos of drivers apparently misusing driver assistance technology, our survey shows that the names manufacturers have given their vehicle systems are confusing consumers. AAA found that 22 percent of Americans expect driver support systems, with names like Autopilot, ProPILOT, or Pilot Assist, to have the ability to drive the car by itself without any supervision, indicating a gap in consumer understanding.

"Most new vehicles are equipped with some level of advanced driver assistance technology, which can enhance the safety of motorists if used properly," LaDoucer continued. "However, it's important to clarify that there are currently no vehicles available for purchase that allow someone to fully disengage from the task of driving."

Consumers are not entirely opposed to advanced vehicle technology. In fact, six in ten U.S. drivers would "definitely" or "probably" want these systems in their next car purchase.

• Examples of ADAS include blind spot warning, adaptive cruise control and automatic emergency braking. Check out AAA's "Clearing the Confusion", which provides naming and descriptions of ADAS in a consistent, easy-to-understand manner.
• Active driving assistance (ADA) combines the tasks of braking, accelerating, and steering through a combined use of adaptive cruise control and lane keeping assistance. ADA is classified as Level 2 automation - the highest level of vehicle automation available for purchase by the public. This technology is not meant to replace the driver. Recent AAA research has found inconsistencies with ADA performance, reinforcing the need for a driver to remain fully engaged.
• Currently unavailable for purchase by consumers are vehicles capable of operating without human involvement. These vehicles are classified as Level 5 automation as defined by the Society of Automotive Engineers.

"AAA seeks to partner with automakers to create greater consistency across the industry," said Greg Brannon, director of automotive research for AAA. "Together, we can help consumers understand the type of technology their vehicle has along with how, when and where to use these systems, which will ultimately build trust in the vehicles of the future."

Methodology

AAA has conducted its annual Autonomous Vehicle (AV) Survey since 2016; data not comparable to years prior to 2021 due to change in methodology. The survey was conducted January 13-17, 2023, using a probability-based panel designed to be representative of the U.S. household population overall. The panel provides sample coverage of approximately 97% of the U.S. household population. Most surveys were completed online; consumers without Internet access were surveyed over the phone.

A total of 1,140 interviews were completed among U.S. adults, 18 years of age or older, of which 949 qualified for the study. The margin of error for the study overall is 4.3% at the 95% confidence level. Smaller subgroups have larger error margins.

AAA is also citing a big jump in travel during spring break. According to the report, 23% of North Dakotans are planning a spring break vacation. That's up from 18% last year.

"AAA expects one of the busiest spring break travel seasons in years," said Debbie Haas, Vice President of Travel for AAA – The Auto Club Group. "Previous spring travel seasons were affected by COVID-19. However, Americans are largely more confident about traveling again, and AAA has seen very strong bookings for beach destinations, cruises, and attractions."

City, Beach vacations are the most popular among Spring Breakers, according to AAA's survey. Florida is the top domestic destination with its beaches, theme parks, and cruise ports.

Hawaii is another Spring Break favorite, with six unique islands and stunning scenery. AAA tour partner Pleasant Holidays says bookings for Hawaiian hotels and cruises are popular this year, as many travelers are opting for warm weather beach destinations.

Cruising is making a big splash this year. Ships leaving from Orlando, Fort Lauderdale, Miami, and Tampa – heading to the Caribbean, Mexico, and Central America – top the list of AAA cruise bookings for Spring Break. Cruises sailing to Alaska, Canada, Northern Europe, and the Persian Gulf have also seen a spike in popularity.

INTERNATIONAL TRAVEL SURGES

AAA travel bookings show a 30% spike in international Spring Break bookings compared to last year. Travelers looking for warm weather are flocking to the Caribbean and Mexico or sailing to tropical destinations while enjoying the amenities of a cruise vacation. Additionally, Americans are taking advantage of the strong U.S. dollar and the exchange rate in Europe.

Eleven percent of North Dakotans say they haven't decided yet if they will travel for Spring Break, according to AAA's survey. It's not too late to make plans, but travelers may need to think outside the box. AAA recommends cities in colder climates where hotel rates are lower this time of year. If traveling with kids, look for hotels with indoor swimming pools. Research destinations that are within driving distance and offer free museums or outdoor attractions. AAA travel agents can help brainstorm other ideas and AAA members enjoy discounts on hotels, car rentals, and attractions.

PLAN AHEAD FOR SUMMER

The demand in Spring Break vacations signals a busy summer travel season. AAA travel agents say more people are booking trips farther in advance. AAA recommends making plans for summer sooner rather than later to avoid higher airline ticket prices and hotel rates. TRAVEL INSURANCE A 'MUST HAVE'

Severe weather spoiled many spring breakers' travel plans last year, by causing widespread flight delays and cancellations. Because of that, 44% of North Dakotans are likely to purchase travel insurance. AAA encourages anyone traveling this year to consider travel insurance, which can provide compensation for expenses associated with flight delays and cancellations. There are also options that provide a refund if you must cancel your trip.

Survey Methodology

The AAA Consumer Pulse™ Survey was conducted online among residents living in North Dakota from January 27 – February 2, 2023. A total of 200 residents completed the survey. Survey results asked of all respondents have a maximum margin of error of ± 6.9% points. Responses are weighted by age and gender to ensure reliable and accurate representation of the adult population (18+) in North Dakota.

The Auto Club Group is launching its annual AAA PROMise program which is an effort to prevent teen substance-impaired driving, as well as distracted driving.

"Prom and graduation season is a time for celebration for many teens and, in some cases, alcohol or drugs may be included in plans," said Gene LaDoucer, regional director of public affairs for AAA-The Auto Club Group. "This becomes particularly dangerous if driving is involved. The combination of impaired and inexperienced drivers can lead to a tragic end."

AAA PROMise provides a multi-tiered approach to enhancing the safety of teen drivers and everyone else on the roads.

How it works:

The teen signs a pledge banner and makes the following promise before celebrating Prom and Graduation:

• I promise not to drive impaired or distracted.
• I promise not to let my friends drive impaired or distracted.
• I promise my parents I will get home safely or call them for help.

By making the AAA PROMise, the teen agrees to openly communicate with his or her parent/guardian regarding a plan for getting home safely on special nights such as Prom and Graduation.

Parents also have an important role to play by making their children feel safe about calling them for help. Parents can PROMise that they will always pick up their teen regardless of the time or location.

How Schools Participate

Public and private schools can participate in this lifesaving program for free by registering at AAA.com/Promise. They will receive a toolkit which includes:

• Fact Sheets/Resources – Overview of the AAA PROMise program and useful information to make it a success.
• Pledge Banner – used to gather each student's signature as a commitment to not drive impaired.
• Drawstring Bags, a AAAPROMise keepsake, and more.

Last year, more than 300 schools participated in the program. The deadline to order is May 31, 2023.

Lifechanging Consequences

Driving impaired can carry lifechanging consequences. Teens could lose their academic eligibility, driver's license, even their life or that of their friends. According to the CDC, Teens are more likely than anyone else to be killed in an alcohol-related crash (even though the minimum legal drinking age in every state is 21). In 2020, 19 percent of 15- to 18-year-old drivers involved in fatal crashes had been drinking.

According to a 2022 AAA teen survey, 30 percent of high school teens report it's likely they or their friends will be under the influence of drugs or alcohol sometime during Prom or Graduation season, and 82 percent believe their peers are likely to drive impaired instead of calling a parent or guardian for help.

Drinking under the age of 21 in North Dakota can result in charges of minor in possession or minor in consumption. Furthermore, drivers under age 21 can be charged for driving under the influence at a blood alcohol concentration (BAC) of just .02, which is punishable by up to five years in prison and a $10,000 fine.

Advice for Teen Drivers

• Pay Attention. Texting and having other passengers in the vehicle can create dangerous distractions for drivers.
• Slow Down. Speeding is a factor in one-third of all fatal crashes involving teen drivers.
• Stay Alert. Prom celebrations can carry well into the late hours. Avoid driving drowsy.
• Buckle Up. Half of young drivers who die in motor vehicle crashes are not wearing their seat belts.
• Drive Sober. If you become impaired, pass the keys to a sober driver or call your parents for help.

Advice for Parents

• Hire a ride. Limousines are not just for looks. Consider chipping in on a chauffeur so teens don't have to decide who's driving.
• Set the Rules. Establish rules for your teen driver which address safe driving habits and the punishment for breaking them. Consider signing a Parent-Teen driving agreement.
• Open your Home. Encourage your teen to ask friends to spend the night to keep them off the roads.
• Be the Example. While driving, model the same behavior you expect from your kids when they drive. Your kids are always watching you, even if they don't admit it.

A Valley City student has won an educational river cruise in Europe though AAA-The Auto Club Group's Discovery Crew Contest.

Kylie Van Bruggen, along with her father, Tyler, will join 59 other 8^th grade students and their chaperones on the trip in March. They will join up with the group in Amsterdam, then sail together on an AmaWaterways river cruise through Belgium and the Netherlands.

AAA partnered with AmaWaterways and Allianz Global Assistance to provide the river cruise, flights, travel insurance, and money for passports. This is the second time AAA – The Auto Club Group has hosted this contest.

This contest was open to all 8^th graders throughout the 14 states that AAA – The Auto Club Group serves. A total of 60 winners were selected. The students entered the contest by answering three essay questions and submitting a selfie showing their passion for travel.

"We were amazed by the passionate responses from the many students who expressed their interest in going on this trip," said Debbie Haas, Vice President of Travel for AAA – The Auto Club Group. "The winners chosen are different in many ways, but each shares a similar enthusiasm for travel.

"Soon these students will immerse themselves in different cultures and see what it's like to be an 8^th grader in two different countries," added Haas. "The students who attended the previous trip called it a life-changing experience, so we are excited to share this opportunity with another group of people."

During the trip, students will follow a custom-designed itinerary with ports of call and shore excursions focused on learning about local history, art, science, nature, and food. Besides sampling local cuisine and visiting historic landmarks like the Anne Frank House, students will enjoy tours that allow them to live out their passion for travel, like riding bicycles near the world-famous Holland windmills. On a more personal level, they will meet students at two different schools to see what life is like as an 8^th grader in Belgium and the Netherlands.

The AAA Foundation for Traffic Safety conducted two field studies on busy roads to determine the effectiveness of various countermeasures like vehicle-mounted variable message signs (VMS), cones, flares, and more. The Foundation determined that VMS was very effective.

The odds of a vehicle moving over were 95-percent higher when the VMS was used. Passenger vehicles were more responsive to the VMS than trucks or buses, although both were more likely to move over when VMS was active than when not.

The foundation also examined cones, flares, and emergency flashing light patterns. Researchers found these led to significant lane shifts by drivers but were less effective at reducing speeds or increasing the distance to the passing vehicles that did not change lanes.

Recommendations

The results from these field studies suggest that using VMS, nighttime light patterns, cones, or flares can positively impact the behaviors of passing motorists under most circumstances. AAA strongly recommends service vehicles or fleets utilize these features, to protect these roadside heroes.

"AAA will be sharing this research with impacted industries and safety advocates in hopes that they will adopt these lifesaving countermeasures," said Gene LaDoucer, regional director of public affairs for AAA – The Auto Club Group. "At the same time, The Auto Club Group is working with lawmakers in several states to require drivers to move over for everyone, including disabled motorists."

Currently, all 50 states require drivers to move over for first responders and tow trucks. Yet only nine states have a law requiring drivers to move over for a disabled vehicle with its hazard lights on. AAA is working with North Dakota lawmakers in effort to pass HB 1141, which would expand current protections to all disabled vehicles along interstate and multi-lane highways in the state.

Passing the bill would help address a tragic trend. Nationwide, nearly 350 people are struck and killed outside a disabled vehicle each year.

"The roadside is equally dangerous for a driver with a flat tire, or the person called in to change it," said LaDoucer. "While we're strong advocates for laws that protect tow truck drivers and first responders, AAA believes everyone should be afforded the same protection."

Dangerous Occupation

Helping stranded motorists should not be one of America's most lethal jobs, but it is. On average, two emergency responders, including tow workers, are struck and killed every month by a driver who fails to obey the law by moving over to an adjacent lane and allowing the roadside rescuers the space to operate, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. Roadside crashes are notably deadly for tow workers. Government data shows that tow operators are killed at a rate of almost 43 deaths per 100,000 workers, compared to just three for all other industries.

As part of its research, the Foundation also surveyed tow workers, emergency responders, and road maintenance workers on their experiences with roadside jobs. Of those surveyed, 60 percent had experienced a near miss while working at the roadside, while an astonishing 15 percent had survived being hit by a passing vehicle.

"These heroes put their lives on the line every time they help someone on the roadside," said LaDoucer. "We ask that drivers minimize distractions and constantly pay attention to the road ahead of you. Doing so could save a life."

AAA Used EV Buyer's Guide Overview

Purchase Price of a New vs Used EV

The 2017 Tesla Model S 75 is a high-performance large sedan with a range of 249 miles and an original MSRP of about $70,000. Currently, a used model might cost $50,000 or more. The more moderately priced 2017 Nissan LEAF S is an economical compact hatchback with a stated range of 107 miles and an original MSRP of about $30,000. A used model might currently cost less than $15,000.

Used EV Ownership Costs

• Buyers can expect to spend thousands less on a used EV than on a new one.
• Overall, used EVs are generally less expensive to own than similar used gas-powered vehicles.
• The most significant savings were in fuel, repair, maintenance, fees, and taxes (due to available rebates for some EVs).
• Fueling a gas vehicle costs roughly three times as much as charging a similar EV.
• Tax incentives of up to $4,000 are available to consumers to purchase used EVs.
• EVs typically cost less to maintain, but used EV owners have to consider the potential cost of eventually replacing the battery, which can be expensive.

Driving Range & Charging

• Driving range and charging are the most common concerns for prospective EV buyers. The good news — most EVs have more than enough range for daily driving habits.
• Overnight charging at home that uses a 240-volt source (known as Level 2) can get most EVs back to full capacity by morning.
• While public charging is not as readily available as gas stations, it is growing quickly. With extra planning, EV owners can eliminate concerns about running out of charge.

Shopping for a Used EV

• EVs are still relatively new to the market, so car buyers may find that used EVs consist primarily of compact sedans and crossovers.
• Before shopping, car buyers should list their vehicle needs (i.e., driving range, size, performance) to ensure they select the right vehicle for the best price.
• When buying a used EV, it is imperative to find a vehicle with a warranty that still has a lot of time before it expires and specifically covers the replacement of the traction battery.

AAA has offered Tow to Go during major holidays for nearly 25 years. During that time, AAA has removed more than 25,000 impaired drivers from the road.

How does it work? When someone calls Two to Go, AAA dispatches a tow truck to transport the would-be impaired driver and their vehicle to a safe location within a 10-mile radius. The service is free for anyone, yet AAA asks that it be treated as a last resort.

Nationwide, AAA expects this to be the third-busiest year for holiday travel on the roads in history. Crash data from NHTSA proves that combining cocktails with crowded roads can be deadly. From Christmas to New Year's in 2020, there were 209 drunk-driving related fatalities nationwide. (NHTSA).

"'Tis the season for gathering with friends and family and AAA is proud to offer this service to help everyone make it home for the holidays safely," said Meredith Mitts, spokeswoman, AAA – The Auto Club Group. "The greatest gift you can give this holiday season is your presence, so be sure to plan for a safe ride home before the celebrations begin. Alcohol, drugs and even prescription medications can affect your ability to drive and cause unnecessary risks for everyone on the roadway. If you're tempted to drive impaired, call AAA instead and we'll transport you and your vehicle to a safe location."

TOW TO GO GUIDELINES

• Provided from 6pm Friday, December 23^rd – 6am Monday, January 2^nd
• Free and available to AAA members and non-members.
• Confidential local ride for one person and their vehicle to a safe location within a 10-mile radius.
• Appointments cannot be scheduled in advance to use Tow to Go. It is designed as a safety net for those that did not plan ahead. Always choose a designated driver before celebrating.
• In some situations, AAA may need to make other arrangements to get an impaired individual a safe ride home.
• Tow to Go may not be available in rural areas or during severe weather conditions.

In the seven-state West North Central Region, made up of mostly widespread rural states, 8.8 million travelers will journey 50 miles or more away from home, an increase of nearly 241,000 people over last year. The total equates to 40-percent of the region's population traveling, the highest share of any region. The WNC region includes Iowa, Kansas, Minnesota, Missouri, North Dakota, Nebraska and South Dakota.

For purposes of this forecast, the year-end holiday travel period is defined as the 11-day period from Friday, December 23 to Monday, January 2. This period is the same length as the 2021/2022 year-end travel period. The year-end holiday travel period can range from 10 to 13 days, depending on which day of the week Christmas Day and New Year's Day fall. All the year-end holiday periods contain two weekends.

"Despite inflationary pressures, consumers remain resilient and dedicated to travel this year, and the holidays will be no different," said Debbie Haas, Vice President of Travel for AAA – The Auto Club Group. "Americans are spending more on travel than any other time in the past two years. The good news is the cost for a holiday road trip will be less expensive than anticipated, now that gas prices are on the way down."

TRAVEL MODES

Nationwide, 90% of holiday travelers will drive to their destinations.

Air travel will see a 14% increase over last year, with nearly 7.2 million Americans expected to fly. Flights and airports will be packed this holiday season, reminiscent of pre-pandemic days. Demand for flights has surged despite higher airline ticket prices. AAA expects the number of people taking holiday flights this year will come close to matching 2019 when 7.3 million Americans traveled by air.

"If the distance is not reasonable to drive, more people are flying to maximize the time spent at their destination," Haas adds. "Conversely, if the travel distances are reasonable and more than one or two people in the household are taking the trip, it may be more cost-effective to drive rather than buy multiple air tickets and rent a car."

Other modes of transportation are also rebounding in a big way. AAA estimates travel by bus, rail, and cruise ship will rise to 3.6 million this holiday season, a 23% increase from last year and nearly 94% of 2019's volume.

Gas Prices

Holiday road trippers are getting the early gift of plunging prices at the pump. The North Dakota average has declined 58 cents per gallon in the past month. Today, the average statewide price is $3.06 per gallon. That's 4 cents less than this date one year ago.

"Since most Americans have already made their holiday travel plans, gas savings likely won't lead to more auto travelers," said Gene LaDoucer, regional director for AAA-The Auto Club Group. "They may, however, provide additional funds for gifts or activities during the holiday."

Busy Roads

Drivers should prepare for delays, particularly in and around major metro areas. Nationwide, drivers could see travel times increase by 25%, according to INRIX, a provider of transportation analytics and insights. The most congested days on the road are forecast to be Friday before Christmas, December 27 and 28, and on Monday, January 2. INRIX predicts the single busiest travel day will be Tuesday, December 27^th. The best advice for avoiding congestion is to leave early in the morning or later in the evening.

AAA Advice for Auto Travelers:

• Leave early so you are not in a rush.
• Watch the weather. Consider alternate routes or adjust your departure time to avoid driving through bad weather.
• Never drive distracted. Pre-program your GPS and put the cellphone down while driving.
• Slow down. Make sure you are driving a speed reasonable for the weather. If visibility is poor, or the roads are slick, slow down.
• Wear your seat belt and never drive impaired.

Stranded motorists

Nearly 899,000 drivers will need AAA roadside assistance during the 11-day holiday period. The most common reasons are for dead batteries, flat tires and lockouts. AAA encourages drivers to get a full vehicle inspection before hitting the road - checking everything from your tires to brakes, lights, and wiper blades. Being stuck on the roadside will be especially dangerous during the holidays, due to the influx of auto travelers and the potential for impaired drivers. AAA reminds motorists to slow down and move over for first responders and tow trucks. And although North Dakota law does not currently require it, AAA also urges drivers to move over for disabled vehicles on the roadside.

"Whether it's a tow truck or a disabled vehicle, when you see flashing lights please move over," said LaDoucer. "We want to make sure all holiday travelers, tow truck drivers and first responders make it home safely for the holidays." Air Travel

Strong demand will create long lines at airports, yet winter weather is the wild card. Snow and other winter conditions can not only cause delays and cancellations, but combine that with strong demand during this season, and you can have a hard time getting re-booked in a hurry.

"If you plan on flying this time of year, travel insurance can be extremely valuable for air travelers," Haas said. "There are policies that can provide compensation for flight delays for as little as three hours. And if your flight is cancelled, passengers can receive compensation for covered out-of-pocket expenses."

Other Air Travel Tips

• Check-in early online.
• Monitor your flight status using your air carrier's mobile app.
• Arrive 2-3 hours before scheduled departure.
• Pack medications and an extra set of clothes in your carry-on bag, just in case your flight is delayed or cancelled.

If you have not booked your flight:

• Book a flight that leaves early in the day. Flights in the afternoon and evening are more susceptible to delays and cancellations.
• Book a direct flight. Otherwise, build in extra time between connections, in case your first flight is delayed.
• Consider traveling on Christmas Day. This could offer the best combination of availability and price.
