"With heavy rain and the potential for flash flooding expected throughout the weekend, drivers should carefully consider whether their trip is necessary," said Montrae Waiters, spokeswoman for AAA-The Auto Club Group. According to recent federal crash data compiled from the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) and the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), approximately 21% of all motor vehicle crashes, or about 745,000 crashes each year, are weather-related. Nearly three-quarters of those crashes occur on wet pavement, and 47% happen during rainfall. Wet roads and rainy conditions also contribute to more than 500,000 injuries annually.

What Should Drivers Do If They Must Travel?

• Slow down. Wet roads reduce traction and increase stopping distances.
• Leave extra space. Increase your following distance to provide more time to react.
• Turn on your headlights. Improve visibility and help other drivers see you.
• Never drive through flooded roadways. Water depth can be difficult to judge, and floodwater can quickly sweep vehicles off the road.
• Watch for hydroplaning. Tires can lose contact with the roadway even in a small amount of standing water.
• Pull over if visibility becomes unsafe. Move as far off the roadway as possible and activate your hazard lights.

DEARBORN, Mich., (October 5, 2026) - Gas prices in Michigan are down 22 cents from a week ago. Michigan drivers are now paying an average of $4.47 per gallon for regular unleaded. This price is 42 cents more than this time last month and  $1.36 more than this time last year.

Motorists are paying an average of $67 for a full 15-gallon tank of gasoline; an increase of about $16 from 2025's highest price last August.

According to new data from the Energy Information Administration (EIA), gasoline demand decreased from 8.84 million barrels per day to 8.68 million. Total domestic gasoline supply decreased from 206 million barrels to 204.4 million. Gasoline production also decreased from 9.59 million barrels to 9.46 million per day.

At the close of Friday’s formal trading session, WTI fell $1.76 to settle at $91.11 per barrel. The EIA reports that U.S. crude oil inventories increased 0.9 million barrels to 427.3 million barrels, 2% above the five-year average.

"Michigan drivers are seeing some relief at the pump, with gas prices dropping 22 cents in the past week," said Adrienne Woodland, spokesperson, AAA-The Auto Club Group. "While prices continue to trend downward, motorists are still paying significantly more than they were a year ago."

Compared to last week, Metro Detroit’s average daily gas price decreased. Metro Detroit’s current average is $4.50 per gallon, about 21 cents less than last week’s average but still $1.43 more than this same time last year.

Many Georgia children may be riding less safely than their parents realize, according to new research released by AAA ahead of Child Passenger Safety Week. AAA found that many children are moving to booster seats and seat belts before they're ready, while many child restraints are not being used correctly.

Data collected during child passenger safety inspections in 2025 found that 96.6% of Georgia children had moved to an adult seat belt before it fit correctly, while 34.3% had transitioned to a booster seat too soon. The same research found that 84.3% of child restraints inspected in Georgia were being used incorrectly.

National crash data also shows child restraint use declines sharply as children get older. According to a recent medical study, injuries involving e-bikes and e-scooters among children and adolescents increased 7.5-fold between 2023 and 2026. The analysis examined more than 12,000 pediatric emergency department visits and found that more than a third of injured patients suffered head or neck injuries, while nearly 7% sustained traumatic brain injuries.

“As e-rides become more common, younger riders are often sharing the road with traffic before they fully understand how to navigate it safely,” said Jenkins. “When you combine higher speeds with limited experience, the risk of a serious crash increases quickly. That’s why it’s critical for parents to stay involved and set clear expectations before a child rides.”

DEARBORN, Mich., (September 21 2026) - Gas prices in Michigan are up 62 cents from last week, setting a new 2026-high. Michigan drivers are now paying an average of $4.93 per gallon for regular unleaded. This price is 72 cents more than this time last month and $1.75 more than this time last year.

Motorists are paying an average of $74 for a full 15-gallon tank of gasoline; an increase of about $23 from 2025's highest price last August.

According to new data from the Energy Information Administration (EIA), gasoline demand increased from 8.55 million barrels per day to 8.79 million. Total domestic gasoline supply also increased from 206.9 million to 207.7 million barrels, as well as gasoline production from 9.3 million barrels per day to 9.6 million barrels.

At the close of Friday’s formal trading session, WTI fell $1.61 to settle at $100.30 a barrel. The EIA reports that U.S. crude oil inventories decreased 0.6 million barrels to 423.4 million barrels, 1% above the five-year average.

"Michigan drivers are seeing a significant increase at the pump, with gas prices climbing 62 cents in just one week and reaching their highest levels since July 2022," said Adrienne Woodland, spokesperson, AAA-The Auto Club Group. "This sharp jump highlights the continued volatility of the global oil market and its impact on drivers."

Compared to last week, Metro Detroit’s average daily gas price increased. Metro Detroit’s current average is $4.92 per gallon, about 62 cents more than last week’s average and $1.73 more than this same time last year.

DEARBORN, Mich. (September 16, 2026) – For more than 75 years, AAA’s Your Driving Costs (YDC) analysis has helped drivers understand the full cost of vehicle ownership. This year’s analysis finds that the average annual cost to own and operate a new vehicle is $12,863, or $1,071.92 per month. This reflects continued increases from fuel prices, depreciation, and finance charges. In 2025, the total annual cost was estimated at $11,577, or $964.78 per month. Note: Methodology updates make this year’s results not directly comparable with last year’s estimate.

This year’s Your Driving Costs analysis integrates select electric vehicles (EVs) and hybrids into standard vehicle categories that used to be exclusively traditional gas-powered models, reflecting their growing share in the new-car market.

 “By looking at EVs, hybrids and traditional gas-powered vehicles within the same categories, consumers can better understand how total ownership costs vary by powertrain,” said Greg Brannon, AAA’s director of automotive engineering. “Looking at the full ownership picture—including depreciation and other expenses—can help consumers better understand the total cost of each option.”

·       Key Cost Themes

·       Fuel Prices – At the time of the study, the regular-grade gasoline used by nearly all YDC vehicles averaged $4.152 per gallon, while electricity for home EV charging averaged 18.0 cents per kilowatt hour. Gas prices are up 31.8% compared to 2025, while electricity prices rose only 7.8%, improving the relative affordability of EVs and hybrids; however, fuel economy alone did not determine the most affordable vehicle to own.

·       Depreciation — The difference between a car’s purchase price and resale value remains the single largest ownership cost, with vehicles losing a weighted average of $4,422 per year. Vehicle type and purchase price both have a significant effect on depreciation for EV shoppers; for example, EV medium sedans had about twice the depreciation of gas-powered models, helping push total ownership costs 29.1% higher in that category.

·       Car Prices – The sales-weighted average MSRP of new vehicles this year is $39,376. While MSRPs increased slightly on average, incentives, demand and rebates can affect what consumers ultimately pay. The actual purchase price is used to calculate finance costs and depreciation.

EV and Hybrid Comparison Takeaways

By comparing select electric and hybrid models within the same categories as gas-powered vehicles, AAA gives shoppers a more practical view of how ownership costs compare across powertrains.

·       Gas-powered vehicles: Overall, gas models offered savings compared to EVs and hybrids in cost categories affected by purchase price, like finance charges, taxes and fees, and depreciation. For example, gas-powered medium sedans cost $10,582 per year to own — $3,080 less than comparable EV medium sedans, which had significantly higher depreciation, fees and finance costs.

·       Electric vehicles: EVs delivered the lowest fuel costs, with charging costs for EVs about 66%–70% lower than fuel costs for traditional gas vehicles across the categories studied. However, those savings were often outweighed by higher depreciation, fees and finance costs; medium-sedan EVs, for example, cost 29.1% more to own annually than gas-powered models.

According to a new AAA travel survey, more than one-fifth (21%) of Michiganders begin planning holiday trips during September and October, while only 8% wait until November or December.

For many travelers, cost is driving those decisions. The survey found that budget concerns (47%) and waiting for lower prices (35%) are the leading reasons travelers delay booking trips. Yet that strategy often backfires. More than two-fifths (42%) of residents said they delayed booking a trip and later paid more than they would have if they booked earlier. Thirteen percent paid significantly more, while 29% paid somewhat more.

"Many travelers are hoping to find a better deal by waiting," said Adrienne Woodland, spokeswoman for AAA - The Auto Club Group. "Unfortunately, our survey shows that strategy doesn't always pay off. DEARBORN, Mich., (September 14, 2026) - Gas prices in Michigan are up 28 cents from a week ago. Michigan drivers are now paying an average of $4.31 per gallon for regular unleaded. This price is 6 cents more than this time last month and $1.04 more than this time last year.

Motorists are paying an average of $65 for a full 15-gallon tank of gasoline; an increase of about $14 from 2025's highest price last August.

According to new data from the Energy Information Administration (EIA), gasoline demand decreased from 8.92 million barrels per day to 8.55 million. Total domestic gasoline supply increased from 205.7 million to 206.9 million barrels. Gasoline production decreased from 9.8 million barrels per day to 9.3 million barrels.

At the close of Friday’s formal trading session, WTI fell $2.43 to settle at $100.05 a barrel. The EIA reports that U.S. crude oil inventories decreased 0.4 million barrels to 424.1 million barrels, matching the five-year average.

"Michigan drivers are seeing a significant increase at the pump, with gas prices reaching levels we haven’t seen since early August ," said Adrienne Woodland, spokesperson, AAA-The Auto Club Group. "This sharp increase underscores the ongoing volatility in global oil markets and serves as a reminder of how quickly fuel prices can shift."

What Should Drivers Check Before a Labor Day Road Trip?

• Battery
  Summer heat can shorten battery life and weaken performance. Drivers should have their battery tested if it's more than a few years old or showing signs of trouble, such as slow engine starts.
• Tires
  Inspect tires for proper inflation and adequate tread depth. Underinflated or worn tires can increase the risk of a blowout, reduce fuel efficiency and affect vehicle handling. Don't forget to check the spare tire.
• Brakes
  Pay attention to squealing, grinding or vibrations when braking. These warning signs may indicate that service is needed before a long trip.
• Fluids
  Check engine oil, coolant, brake fluid, transmission fluid and windshield washer fluid. Proper fluid levels help keep vehicles operating safely and efficiently.

DEARBORN, Mich., (August 31, 2026) - Gas prices in Michigan are up 1 cent from a week ago. Michigan drivers are now paying an average of $4.17 per gallon for regular unleaded. This price is 11 cents less than this time last month but still 84 cents more than this time last year.

Motorists are paying an average of $62 for a full 15-gallon tank of gasoline; an increase of about $11 from 2025's highest price last August.

According to new data from the Energy Information Administration (EIA), gasoline demand increased from 8.68 million barrels per day to 9.04 million. Total domestic gasoline supply decreased from 209.4 million barrels to 206.8 million. Gasoline production increased last week, averaging 9.8 million barrels per day.

At the close of Friday’s formal trading session, WTI fell 13 cents to settle at $83.40 a barrel. The EIA reports that crude oil inventories increased by 0.1 million barrels from the previous week. At 428.9 million barrels, U.S. crude oil inventories are 1% above the five-year average for this time of year.

As Americans prepare to closeout summer with Labor Day getaways, this year’s holiday road trip will cost more at the pump. On Labor Day 2025, Michigan’s average price of gasoline was $3.30 per gallon.

"Michigan gas prices have remained relatively stable ahead of Labor Day weekend, increasing by just one penny from a week ago," said Adrienne Woodland, spokesperson, AAA-The Auto Club Group. "While this stability is welcome, Michigan drivers will still pay more at the pump this holiday than they did last year. Travelers should budget accordingly and make sure their vehicles are road-trip ready before hitting the road."

Compared to last week, Metro Detroit’s average daily gas price decreased. Metro Detroit’s current average is $4.17 per gallon, about 4 cents less than last week’s average but still 86 cents more than this same time last year.

By comparison, some higher-powered devices commonly marketed as e-motos can exceed those speeds and deliver performance that more closely resembles a moped or motorcycle.

Although the devices may look similar, their speed, performance, and legal requirements can be very different. Some higher-speed models are subject to registration, insurance and licensing requirements under Illinois law.

AAA encourages consumers to focus less on marketing labels and more on a device's actual capabilities, including:

• The device's maximum speed

• Its top speed and how it’s classified under Illinois law

• Where it can legally operate

• Whether registration, insurance or licensing requirements apply

"Two devices may look similar at first glance but perform very differently," said Hart. "Understanding how fast a device can travel and how it is classified can help riders make safer decisions and better understand their responsibilities."

Why Do Device Classifications Matter?

The new law addresses several issues identified in a recent AAA Foundation for Traffic Safety study examining the safety of e-bikes, e-scooters and other micromobility devices. The Foundation found that inconsistent device classifications and limited rider education can make it difficult for riders, parents and policymakers to understand the capabilities and risks associated with different types of micromobility devices.

The study identified several priorities for improving safety:

• Uniform device classifications

• Rider education

• Helmet safety

• Improved crash and injury data collection

• Better roadway and device visibility

"Clear classifications help riders understand what they're operating and where it belongs," said Hart. "But classifications alone aren't enough. Riders and parents also need to understand the capabilities of these devices, the risks associated with higher speeds and the importance of wearing the right safety gear."

Why are E-Bike and E-Scooter Injuries Rising?

As the popularity of e-bikes and e-scooters has increased, so have injuries involving these devices.

Recent data analyzed by Truveta found emergency department visits involving e-bike and e-scooter injuries among children and adolescents increased 7.5-fold between 2023 and May 2026. More than one-third of injured riders were diagnosed with head or neck injuries.

These findings reinforce recommendations from the AAA Foundation for Traffic Safety that prioritize rider education, helmet safety and better understanding of device capabilities and risks.

A new AAA survey found that while 85% of Michigan dog owners believe restraints are important, nearly two in five (38%) still allow their dogs to ride unrestrained. MINNEAPOLIS, (August 24, 2026) — Speeding has become so common that many drivers consider going 10 mph over the posted speed limit acceptable, while nearly half believe keeping up with traffic is safer than obeying the speed limit, according to new research from the AAA Foundation for Traffic Safety.

The findings suggest many drivers no longer define speeding by the posted speed limit alone. Three in ten drivers agreed with the statement, "No one actually drives the speed limit," highlighting how speeding has become normalized for many motorists.

Those attitudes come with real consequences. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, speeding was a factor in nearly 30% of traffic fatalities in 2024.

"Too many drivers have convinced themselves that speeding is just part of driving," said Brynna Knapp, spokesperson for AAA – The Auto Club Group. "The reality is that crashes don't care what's considered normal. The faster you're going, the less time you have to avoid a dangerous situation."

Why Do Drivers Speed?

The study found drivers most often speed because they:

• Want to get around slower drivers (31%)
• Want to reach their destination faster (25%)
• Don't want to hold up traffic (21%)

The study also found that many drivers don't expect enforcement until they are traveling roughly 10 to 12 mph above the posted speed limit, which may help explain why so many view modest speeding as acceptable.

What Makes Drivers Slow Down?

The threat of a ticket is the strongest incentive for people to slow down. Drivers also said they are most likely to reduce their speed to:

• Avoid getting a ticket (79%)
• Avoid a crash (72%)
• Respond to bad weather (60%)

What Speed Enforcement Measures Do Drivers Support?

Despite growing acceptance of speeding, drivers overwhelmingly support targeted speed enforcement. Additionally:

• 87% support increased police presence in areas with a history of speed-related crashes
• 88% support increased enforcement in areas with the potential for speed-related crashes
• About seven in ten support automated speed enforcement cameras in those locations

Support drops, however, when measures take control away from the driver. While more than 90% believe speed humps are effective, fewer than half support installing them in their own neighborhoods. Drivers also favor warning systems that alert them when they're speeding over technology that actively limits vehicle speed.

"Drivers may not agree on every solution, but they recognize that speeding is a serious safety issue," Knapp said. "The findings show strong support for targeted enforcement in places where speed-related crashes are happening. That's an important step toward making roads safer."

What Should Drivers Do When Traffic Around Them is Speeding?

"There's a lot of pressure to go with the flow of traffic, especially when everyone around you seems to be speeding," Knapp said. "But safe driving isn't about matching the fastest vehicle on the road. It's about making sure you have enough time to see a problem, react, and avoid a crash."

AAA recommends drivers choose their speed based on:

• The posted speed limit
• Visibility conditions
• Road and weather conditions
• The amount of space around their vehicle

If the surrounding traffic is moving faster than the speed limit:

• Stay in the right lane when possible
• Maintain a steady, predictable speed
• Increase following distance and monitor approaching vehicles

“These devices are not toys,” said Adrienne Woodland, spokeswoman for AAA – The Auto Club Group. “E-bikes and scooters can travel at speeds that catch riders and drivers off guard. As e-ride usage increases, so have the number of serious injuries and deaths. If your child plans to e-ride to school, we encourage parents to teach safe riding habits before the first day.”

DEARBORN, Mich., (August 24, 2026) - Gas prices in Michigan are down 11 cents from a week ago. Michigan drivers are now paying an average of $4.16 per gallon for regular unleaded. This price is 10 cents less than this time last month but still 85 cents more than this time last year.

Motorists are paying an average of $62 for a full 15-gallon tank of gasoline; an increase of about $11 from 2025's highest price last August.

According to new data from the Energy Information Administration (EIA), gasoline demand decreased from 8.96 million barrels per day to 8.68 million. Total domestic gasoline supply increased from 208.7 million barrels to 209.4 million. Gasoline production also increased last week, averaging 9.7 million barrels per day.

At the close of Wednesday’s formal trading session, WTI rose 23 cents to settle at $87.06 a barrel. The EIA reports that crude oil inventories increased by 4.4 million barrels from the previous week. At 428.8 million barrels, U.S. crude oil inventories are matching the five-year average for this time of year.

"Gas prices are lower to start the week, providing some welcome relief for drivers" said Adrienne Woodland, spokesperson, AAA-The Auto Club Group. "However, ongoing market volatility means prices could continue to fluctuate."

Compared to last week, Metro Detroit’s average daily gas price decreased slightly. Metro Detroit’s current average is $4.21 per gallon, about 2 cents less than last week’s average but still 91 cents more than this same time last year.

DEARBORN, Mich., (August 17, 2026) - Gas prices in Michigan are up 12 cents from a week ago. Michigan drivers are now paying an average of $4.27 per gallon for regular unleaded. This price is 19 cents more than this time last month and $1.13 more than this time last year.

Motorists are paying an average of $64 for a full 15-gallon tank of gasoline; an increase of about $13 from 2025's highest price last August.

According to new data from the Energy Information Administration (EIA), gasoline demand decreased from 9.03 million barrels per day to 8.96 million. Total domestic gasoline supply decreased from 209.7 million barrels to 208.7 million. Gasoline production also decreased, averaging 9.6 million barrels per day.

At the close of Friday’s formal trading session, WTI rose $1.15 to settle at $82.40 a barrel. The EIA reports that crude oil inventories increased by 17.4 million barrels from the previous week. At 424.4 million barrels, U.S. crude oil inventories are about 2% below the five-year average for this time of year.

"The relief Michigan drivers experienced last week was short-lived, as pump prices have reversed course and climbed by double digits," said Adrienne Woodland, spokesperson, AAA-The Auto Club Group. "While the increase may be frustrating, motorists can help offset higher fuel costs by combining errands, maintaining proper tire pressure, and comparing gas prices before filling up."

Compared to last week, Metro Detroit’s average daily gas price increased slightly. Metro Detroit’s current average is $4.23 per gallon, about 4 cents more than last week’s average and $1.05 more than this same time last year.
